Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the Fox Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

Once Ben & Kate was yanked from Fox's Tuesday night schedule, both New Girl and The Mindy Project ratings moved upwards. New Girl was never in danger, but The Mindy Project's prospects have elevated enough to make it "likely to be renewed".

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Guys, I’d hold off making any adjustment to The Following until a couple more episodes are in the data. But right now, it still looks good for renewal.

  • ars041

I was just looking at the dvr numbers and on january 31st glee scored a 2.1 in the demo with about 5.5 million overall viewers. the dvr ratings boosted those numbers to a 3.3 in the demo and about 8.5 million overall. So glee is still getting pretty darn good numbers. They just aren’t watching it live. I don’t think nielsen ratings are that accurate though because those are people with nielsen boxes. so glee only scoring 2.1 is only those with nielsen boxes. there were probably 2 million more people watching but they don’t have nielsen boxes

I’d like people’s opinion on whether I should switch Glee and the two comedies on my schedule. Glee works best at 8 pm, and Raising Hope works pretty much the same in each time period. Any thoughts?

  • Dan

@Nick – The schedule looks good but I’m not sure if FOX is going to make any drastic changes. I expect there to be a couple of new dramas fridays and Glee to stay Thursdays. As much as it seems inevitable, I’m not sure if FOX is ready to move Glee to fridays, thought they have done stranger things. I do thnk the 2 hour Tuesday block will probably remain intact with Raising Hope, Mindy Project, New Girl and a New comedy while the following airs midseason.

  • omabin

I think that friday lineup is too young skewing to work on fridays to be honest, especially Glee. I understand the temptation to just move it to fridays to die there, but it would be too ugly. Touch ugly imo. As much as I don’t like it either, Fox will still be better of with Glee on Thursdays and Kitchn Nightmares or whatever reality on Fridays. Did you see my schedule a few pages back? It is basically the same as yours except for what I just said (I also add another comedy on the last half hour of Wednesday, because they desperately need to try to find hits as much as possible), but what I suggest is that after Raising Hope (double airings on fridays during fall) is done, one out of Glee, the tuesday new drama or the monday new drama moves to friday to make room for the following. What would you think about that?

Person with Fox schedueling please put glee on tusedays @ 9pm I like it rated R. Blaine and Kurt get more screan time. And glee is doing fine it’ll get season 6 and 7

  • langslow

The Nielsen ratings are based on a scientific sample of viewers, not just viewers with Nielsen boxes, and are fairly accurate. I don’t know what the margin of error is in their statistics, but it is probably small.

  • TeeVeeViewer

If TMP is renewed, it will be yet another programming mistake by Fox. The show just isn’t funny.

  • The Hafk

Adult Swim has syndication deals for Family Guy, King of the Hill, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show. And it used to have Futurama until Comedy Central outbid them to start producing more episodes. And it was also home to two of Loren Bouchard’s previous shows. (Home Movies and Lucy, The Daughter of the Devil)

I’m surprised there isn’t already a syndication deal in place, this is right up their alley.

  • Mindy

I don’t know anybody who watches The Mindy Project, nor have I seen any buzz around the show. Is it doing good enough because of the lead-in?

  • Mindy

    @ Ben

Why would you have 3 days of XFactor/Idol? Their ratings are down for a reason, why do you think having it 3 days on would benefit FOX?

  • Hades

    9-New Drama/The Following

    8-New Drama
    9-New Girl
    9.30-New Comedy

    8-X Factor/Idol
    9-X Factor/Idol

    8-X Factor/Idol

    8-Raising Hope
    8.30-New Comedy
    9-New Drama

  • Nancy

I love The Mindy Project and hope it gets renewed.

  • Nick

Yeah, that’s probably what’ll happen. I don’t expect Fox to have anything near to my schedule.

I think that friday lineup is too young skewing to work on fridays to be honest,

Raising Hope is pretty old-skewing and could work on Fridays.

I understand the temptation to just move it to fridays to die there, but it would be too ugly. Touch ugly imo.

I’m not moving it to Fridays so it could die there. It might do well there (at least not as bad as Touch). I will move it to 8 pm nect week, though. It seems to do better there.

Fox will still be better of with Glee on Thursdays and Kitchn Nightmares or whatever reality on Fridays.

There, I disagree with you. Glee isn’t doing that good out of X Factor an bleeding profusely from Idol. The slot should be given next year to a show with more potential (like The Following) or a show that needs the promotion (like Kitchen Nightmares, which Fox killed with bad scheduling this year).

what I suggest is that after Raising Hope (double airings on fridays during fall) is done, one out of Glee, the tuesday new drama or the monday new drama moves to friday to make room for the following. What would you think about that?

That’s perfectly fine, but I already have Kitchen Nightmares slot-sharing with The Following. Then it will replace a fallen drama until Hell’s Kitchen is ready in the spring. Also, I don’t think Raising Hope needs to be burned off. It’s ratings aren’t that bad, considering it has no lead-in.

    Raising Hope-Certain Renewal
    New Girl-Certain Renewal
    The Mindy Project-Likely Renewal
    American Idol-Certain Renewal
    Glee-Certain Renewal
    Kitchen Nightmares-Certain Renewal
    Touch-Certain Cancellation
    Cops-Certain Renewal

  • Ben

Just playing around with it. Maybe it is hard to keep people around for a full 2 hours. Plus if it airs 3 nights a week it could boost all the shows airing at 9 instead of just Thursday. That giant lead-in should be able to benefit more than just Glee.

  • omabin

Well, I just think that the summed result of moving Glee to Friday’s and Ramsay to Thursday is not worthy of the move. By other words, I don’t believe that whatever Ramsay show Fox moves to the post x-factor slot (which btw, is no idol as lead-in), will increase enough to offset the horrible decline that Glee would have on Fridays. That is my point and I stand by it. Agree to disagree I guess.

As for Raising Hope, I agree that is not that bad to be burned off. My problem is what to pair it with. I disagree with premiering another comedy on fridays. FOX has way too much to worry about on weekdays to afford to premiere a new comedy on fridays imo, especially because I doubt Hope will be there for long anyway, it is just to get it to syndication (maybe to 100 episodes if it does well enough, but that’s it). Just seems like a waste of effort and promotional money to me… Hence my burnoff suggestion.

However, I must say that since FOX has announced special airings of NG and TMP after Idol, I am coming back to my original idea that New Girl should get thursdays next season since I believe it has potential to go way higher than it is going now. This would, indeed, force me to move Glee to fridays, as ugly as it would be:

    New Drama

    New Male Skewing Comedy
    New Male Skewing Comedy
    New Drama

    The X-Factor

    The X-Factor
    New Girl
    The Mindy Project

    Raising Hope
    Raising Hope

Then kitchen nightmares fills in once RH finishes its order and the following replaces the poorest performing of the two new dramas. Should the other drama also bomb, Hell’s Kitchen for the rescue. Raising Hope should also have a November start so that it can go back to Tuesdays should one of the new comedies bomb (even if it would not really fit in with the night).

    How do you like this?
