TO AIR ON A SPECIAL NIGHT AFTER “American Idol

THURSDAY, APRIL 4 ON FOX

All-new episodes of New Girl (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) and The Mindy Project (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) move to Thursday, April 4 on a special night, following an all-new episode of American Idol (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.

In the all-new “Date Night” episode of New Girl (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT), Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson), who are caught between friendship and something more, try to break out of relationship limbo by going on a “first” date. Once Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) realize a full-on Jess/Nick romance might be happening, they swoop in to try to sabotage the date.

In the all-new “Mindy’s Birthday” episode of The Mindy Project (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) throws Mindy (Mindy Kaling) a surprise birthday party, but when her two worlds collide – personal and professional— it’s nothing to celebrate. Meanwhile, Jeremy (Ed Weeks) and Danny (Chris Messina) fight over the same girl (guest star Kelen Coleman, “Newsroom”).

Looks like FOX may be testing the waters for a new female-centric comedy hour after American Idol for next year.

  • matt

Wonder if they’re trying something for next season

  • Joseph

    Yes!!! So happy with this!

  • Ben

    smart decision

  • rob60990

There’s 3 possible reasons for them doing this. They could be testing airing comedy Thursday at 9, they could potentially try to boost both shows in their current timeslots, or they just don’t want to waste the timeslot on reruns of Glee.

  • Greg

New Girl has one episode scheduled to air next week and now with this one special airing, that leaves five episodes to air from March until May (unless they plan on doing something with Goodwin Games, but I don’t think so).

  • rob60990

Anyways, from my reasons, I’m going with the 2nd and 3rd. I think FOX is going to stick with the Tuesday comedy block next year. They probably want to strengthen Mindy so it could air on its own somewhere in the 8pm hour.

FINALLY! I have been saying for ages that new girl should follow idol to maximize on its growth potential! I will take one airing this season as a test for the next one!

I think the only problem at this point is that Glee is too weak to come back to Tuesdays at this point and I am not sure if Fox is willing to go with two new dramas that night just like that and ship Glee of to fridays, especially considering that they will also need another new drama for mondays since the following only comes back midseason. But well, ABC and CBS, heck even the cw, promote three or more new dramas all the time, so why not? But Glee would obviously die sooo badly on fridays, it has no type of friday’s audience whatsoever, i am speaking Touch’s numbers.

    So:
    Monday
    Bones
    New Drama

    Tuesday
    New Drama
    New Drama

    Wednesday
    The X-Factor
    New Comedy

    Thursday
    The X-Factor
    New Girl
    New Comedy

    Friday
    Raising Hope
    The Mindy Project
    Glee

    Alternatively:
    Monday
    Bones
    New Drama

    Tuesday
    New Male Skewing Comedy
    New Make Skewing Comedy
    New Drama

    Wednesday
    The X-Factor

    Thursday
    American Idol
    New Girl
    The Mindy Project

    Friday
    Raising Hope
Raising Hope [Hell's Kitchen to fill in once it is over]
    Glee

@Rob60990 – Probably all 3, Idol may give both series a boost as earlier this season I predicted at least Mindy would get one post Idol slot. The boost may help both shows for the remainder of the season and both shows will certainly be renewed. They could try out a Thursday at 9 block with the 2 comedies for next season knowing that NBC’s The Office is gone and Grey’s is slowing down, taking advantage of the slot. Maybe then Glee might move back to Tuesdays with Raising Hope and a knew comedy. And its also possible that instead of airing a rerun behind a new Idol, a boost for a couple of new shows is better.

My question to anyone is if Raising Hope as a 24 episode order and only 22 episodes set to air by March 28 (Billed as the season finale) what will happen to the remaining 2 episodes? Was the episode order scaled back from 24 to 22?

  • rob60990

So if CBS decides to expand, we may have 3 networks airing comedy at Thursday at 9? Oh boy.

  • KevinSW

hhmm I think next Season Glee back to 8 on Wednesday, New Comedy at 9 and Raising Hope at 9:30

While New Girl and Mindy on Thursday after X-Factor & American Idol?

    Seems logic to me

  • John A

As Rob said Fox dont want to Waste Idol lead in on Glee Repeats.

  • KevinSW

Oops mean Tuesday not Wednesday lol

I have seen nothing indicating that FOX cut the episode order. Presumably, FOX is just having them produce the episodes for use next season.

  • DW

may is staring to look very interesting.

  • DamC

i’m really worried about how FOX will schedule New Girl this spring, with only 5 episodes to air on Tuesdays between March and May. i hope they don’t spread them too much

  • SJ

There are only five episodes of New Girl left to air on Tuesdays, and seven of The Mindy Project, which I expect will air a double episode out of a Hell’s Kitchen original at some point. That’s six weeks. If the remaining two episodes of Raising Hope are in fact being produced they may air them there are well. That’s seven weeks.

My bet is, Hell’s Kitchen will air double episodes on the remaining weeks through the end of the season. There’s just no need to air low-rated New Girl repeats and it’s looking doubtful that Goodwin Games (the ONLY comedy, mind you, that I’ve been looking forward to this season) will even make it on the air.

I don’t think New Girl will air a single original episode in March.

  • Laura G

    What about my glee??? :(

  • Ultima

    @SJ
I don’t think New Girl will air a single original episode in March.

They have one scheduled after the Hell’s Kitchen premiere. After that, I expect it will be in repeats for the next three Tuesdays leading up to the Thursday airing. Maybe one repeat the rest of the way after that.

  • Ultima

    @Laura G
    What about my glee?

Do you really have an issue with FOX not airing Glee repeats?
