FX announced it renewed new drama The Americans after the ratings for the fourth episode came in and showed growth over the third episode (and were on par with the second episode, see below). Reasonable people can debate whether the timing of the announcement was merely coincidental, but there's no debating that ratings for the fourth episode improved slightly over the third episode, and there's no debating that it has been renewed for a second season.
Ratings for the first four episodes of The Americans:
| Date | Live+SD 18-49 Rtg | Live+SD Viewers | |
| Wednesday, January 30, 2013 | 1.2 | 3.22 | |
| Wednesday, February 06, 2013 | 0.8 | 1.97 | |
| Wednesday, February 13, 2013 | 0.7 | 1.65 | |
| Wednesday, February 20, 2013 | 0.8 | 1.91 |
There's now another correct response to the "Shows that have changed networks" trivia question. Tyler Perry's "For Better Or Worse" will get a 3rd season, but it will be leaving TBS and moving to OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). OWN will also get the rights to the 45 episodes from the first two seasons. Look for season 3 to debut in the fall.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

I believe For Better For Worse used to get dire ratings on TBS. It doesn’t surprise me they dumped it.
So happy that The Americans has been renewed. I highly recommend it. Great drama all around and a fascinating view of Reagan era espionage.
Looks like the next shows to be renewed is Cougar Town, and cancelled soon would be Monday Mornings.
TBS may be moving out of the Tyler Perry business, Tyler Perry’s shows would be a better fit at OWN, while comedies like Men at Work, Sullivan and Son and Cougar Town work best at TBS.
Doesn’t surprise me that The Americans have been renewed, FX’s first drama in a year and a half performing much better than Lights Out and Terriers definitely justified the renewal.
And just checking back at the list and it seems like Hung, Bored to Death and How to Make it in America are all still canceled.
GIRLS WILL BE CANCELED SOONER THAN LATER.
Lena Dunham is a no class pig that hangs around F-list celebs that think it’s okay to tweet RACIAL SLURS. This is further proof that Lena Dunham is nothing but a no class monster!..and not even the GOLDEN GLOBE that HBO PAID FOR is gonna help her low rated trasy trainwreck!
Please hbo, don’t subject us to that MUG another week. ew!
RACIST
A VERY SICK OBAMA COMMERCIAL
DUNHAM IS SUCH AN EMBARASSMENT TO AMERICANS! I’m sad she was born in such a wonderful country as THE USA. (I’m not American but I love you guys!)
….What do y’all think DALLAS chances are at a third season? I really enjoy this show and JOHN ROSS JR. is pretty much one KICK A%% character! Also loving Pamela as well. Hot and bad a%% more screen time for her please!
For Better or Worse aired on Fridays, and got a 0.5-0.6 usually right?
I don’t think that’s horrible for a Friday show, and it’s not like TBS made the effort to actually advertise the show. Most of the time I didn’t even know when the show was returning and when it was coming back. I had to keep checking facebook. OWN will definitely treat the show a lot better, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ratings grow and new viewers tune in.
We need a Cancellation Cub to whack, dump, and devour cancelled cable shows!
Good news on Americans!
Why can’t Tyler Perry stop!
This is Black History Month. So I find it offensive that you list Kroll Show but not Key & Peele, which was renewed for a 13 episode third season. Not only is it offensive but it is jeselnik offensive. White sketch comedy makes Seidman’s list, while black sketch comedy gets the burn. Robert Seidman’s treatment of separate but equal sketch comedy shows is disturbing. While both shows are scripted and on cable, Seidman recognizes the status of one but not the other.
TBS has been out of the Tyler Perry business for a while. Before the news regarding For Better or for Worse, Perry signed a deal with OWN to develop new sitcoms.
Counting the new season of For Better or for Worse, three Perry shows will be on OWN in the fall. TVBTN has posted the press releases detailing these developments.
Common Anomaly,
“black sketch comedy gets the burn”
Has Jeff Ross’ show been renewed yet, or is it too soon?
My predictions-
Bunheads: Likely Cancellation
Lying Game, The: Likely Renewal
Switched At Birth: Certain Renewal
Archer: Certain Renewal
Justified: Certain Renewal
Legit : Likely Cancellation
Being Human: Likely Renewal
Cougar Town: Certain Renewal
Dallas: Certain Renewal
Monday Mornings: Likely Cancellation
Southland: On the Bubble
Happily Divorced: On the Bubble
Hot In Cleveland: Certain Renewal
Monday Mornings isn’t the only low-rated show on TNT anymore. Southland is at Leverage levels. They make Dallas’s ratings look so good, it’s a certain renewal.
It wasn’t intentional, my intent was to exclude ALL sketch comedies. Kroll Show removed from list, problem solved.
FX is going to regret renewing The Americans. Who jumps the gun and renews a show just because it goes up 1 tenth in a week?
The Lying Game deserves to be cancelled. Its not even benefitting from PLL anymore and it wont work anywhere else on schedule on its own. ABCF needs to focus on building new hits and not worry about supporting a failure which is what TLG has been since the beginning.
Next someone will complain about a blank line between two CMDY shows (‘Futurama’, ‘South Park’).
Next someone will complain about a blank line between two CMDY shows (‘Futurama’, ‘South Park’).
ha. that’ll be fixed next week…unless I decide these posts aren’t worth the hassle of the comments before then!
Why do you write tvbythenumbers.com a couple of times in the table? It makes the table a little harder to read for little to no gain considering advertising the website on your own website’s table is rather silly.
I guess it might be there for people who pilfer the table with a swift copy/paste, but I bet most people will erase it anyway. Even if they were to give you credit, they will probably write the website at the top and erase the instances in the table. No one other than you I suppose thinks it actually looks presentable this way.
I demand that you remove Curb Your Enthusiasm off your master list because the plots of the episodes are established in an outline and the dialogue is largely improvised by the actors, thus not meeting your strict definition of scripted, as seen by your disdain and removal of sketch comedy shows. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
