FX announced it renewed new drama The Americans after the ratings for the fourth episode came in and showed growth over the third episode (and were on par with the second episode, see below). Reasonable people can debate whether the timing of the announcement was merely coincidental, but there's no debating that ratings for the fourth episode improved slightly over the third episode, and there's no debating that it has been renewed for a second season.
Ratings for the first four episodes of The Americans:
| Date | Live+SD 18-49 Rtg | Live+SD Viewers | |
| Wednesday, January 30, 2013 | 1.2 | 3.22 | |
| Wednesday, February 06, 2013 | 0.8 | 1.97 | |
| Wednesday, February 13, 2013 | 0.7 | 1.65 | |
| Wednesday, February 20, 2013 | 0.8 | 1.91 |
There's now another correct response to the "Shows that have changed networks" trivia question. Tyler Perry's "For Better Or Worse" will get a 3rd season, but it will be leaving TBS and moving to OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). OWN will also get the rights to the 45 episodes from the first two seasons. Look for season 3 to debut in the fall.
Notes:
- Kids shows and Adult Swim shows are not on the list below
- I've seen some squawking about shows on the list below that are owned/created by networks/studios outside of the United States. For purposes of this list, which focuses on U.S. cable networks, I'm only focused on where the shows air here in U.S.
- Shows from overseas like Downton Abbey & Sherlock that air on PBS in the U.S. are not in the list below (PBS is not a cable network), though ITV has renewed Downton Abbey for a 4th season in the UK which will ultimately air in the states.
- Despite some current inconsistencies in the table below, I do not intend to track episode orders or return dates specifically in this table at this time. The primary goal of the table is: what's been renewed, what's been canceled, and what shows fates haven't been decided yet.

Most of the shows on the list have statuses - if there isn't a status that just means there has been no announcement at the time of the most recent update (see date at top of post and/or above the table below).

Being Human on BBCA has been cancelled. The 5th season will be its last.
Congrats to the Americans.
News of the Future
The TBA debut of “Primeval: New World” on SyFy will be for a single season only arriving on this list as ‘Canceled after 1st season’ outa the gate … unless the “we’re looking at other networks for a second season” brings forth the miracle salvation … but don’t bet on it.
ymmv
PS: I’m assuming Common Anomaly is trying to be funny with the comments … and failing miserably … which makes me think he/she is a writer on one of those sketch comedy shows which also, IMHO, fail miserably.
PPS: Since this is hit on Robert day, Yo Robert! Canceled has only 1 L … I demand you remove all extra L’s from this post forthwith otherwise I shall report you to the Bad Spelling Commission. Also please note that your site can be viewed in Quebec so you must now make all posts in both English and French otherwise the Quebec Language Police will be notified.
PPPS: See, I too can sometimes fail miserably when attempting to be humorous so don’t feel too bad Common Anomaly, it happens.
Out There – IFC – 1st season – 10 episodes
Spam filter hits me AGAIN in this thread!
Robert, there is something wrong WITH THIS THREAD! I NEVER get the spam filter hit except in THIS THREAD!
What I posted was asking where Cinemax went – I think the blank line between BET and CMDY is supposed to be Cinemex which is missing.
@rob60990
the lying game should be renewed, he was the only show that had reasonable ratings after PLL, besides being successful in Latin America and is among the top sellers on itunes, only this time PLL and TLG of the shows of ABC Family are in Top 100 itunes
@Nick – I would change the certain and likely between Dallas and Monday Mornings. Dallas will definitely get a third season but its numbers are at likely level, though I doubt TNT would drop this continued successful franchise even with JR’s death. Monday Mornings is certain cancellation, luckily its on cable where it will air all episodes. TNT had 3 dramas all do great and renewed for second season last summer so MM’s failure isn’t too bad.
I agree with you’re ABC family predictions although Bunheads and Lying Game are both bubble to me, Bunheads is on the one and done end where LG will probably get another 10 episodes ordered as part of it’s second season or a 10 ep third season.
I would think Happily Divorced is a likely certain renewal. Its numbers have been OK but it seems like a show TV land would want to keep around. Legit they may keep but I wouldn’t be surprised if they axed. I wonder what comedy they will pair with Wilfred this summer?
@Rob60990 – Nah I don’t think so. FX likes the series and so far the show has good numbers, they are taking a gamble in hoping the numbers will improve. If not then after Season 2 the show will be axed, but FX will say at least we tried. Not every drama will be a smash hit in Season 1 and FX has barely launched any dramas but Americans and American Horror story since 2011.
“the lying game should be renewed, he was the only show that had reasonable ratings after PLL, besides being successful in Latin America and is among the top sellers on itunes, only this time PLL and TLG of the shows of ABC Family are in Top 100 itunes”
I don’t follow those other numbers because well I think they’re irrelevant. The last episode got a .4. That is really bad but I still expect them to renew it for another 10 or so episodes. I think they should just consider ending it after that.
@Dan Thank you for shedding truth to Rob.Unlike his flop at birth that started off with 1.3 and drop to a .6 at the end of the season with also less than 2 million views.BTW i am a fan of switch at birth but saying that Abc should cancel their shows that are not big hits is ridiculous.TLG ratings are not that much different from S@B.(.5-.7) besides the .4 it made this Tuesday.(S@B .6-.8.)It should be up next week considering most networks were down.TLG was up in viewers but down a tenth.S@B has fallen alot this season and i absolutely have no idea why. .6 is okay but it is not a hit show.It is not a cheap to make.TLG is much cheaper even though the ratings are not super high.Bunheads and Switch at birth are more expensive to produce than TLG.That is why TLG was renewed over Jane By design and Make it or Break it besides the ratings increase
What I posted was asking where Cinemax went – I think the blank line between BET and CMDY is supposed to be Cinemex which is missing.
Cinemax under MAX as always.
Why do you write tvbythenumbers.com a couple of times in the table? It makes the table a little harder to read for little to no gain considering advertising the website on your own website’s table is rather silly.
Easiest way to discourage sites that steal content outright and/or put a teeny tiny link at the bottom after stealing content outright.
Out There – IFC – 1st season – 10 episodes
wait, you’re not offended that I’m biased against little watched animations on IFC, but include lowest common denominator animations from Comedy Central?
Alphas wasn’t cancelled – It was Ended (They killed off the entire cast in the Series Finale – there were talks it might come back for a new season (It’s Genre TV…. everyone being dead isn’t necessarily the end) but they felt it ended on the right note.
@Ron, First of all, Switched at Birth in its first 10 episodes aired after Secret Life and aired in the summer. Then it went to air in the winter on a different night and time and during the regular season so the decline wasn’t unexpected. If Switched at Birth is such a flop for pulling mostly .7-.8 on its own with no lead-in, then what would you call The Lying Game pulling .5-.6 after PLL 1.1-1.2? ABCF doesn’t care if The Lying Game is holding its rating from its premiere because its premiere rating sucked. Just because its held around there doesn’t make that rating any better.
As far as costs, I’m sure you don’t have any data to back that up but I would not be shocked if Switched at Birth was more expensive with cast members such as Lea Thompson, Constance Marie, & Marlee Matlin.
Well I’m enjoying the Americans so I’m glad
@ Robert Seidman
“wait, you’re not offended that I’m biased against little watched animations on IFC, but include lowest common denominator animations from Comedy Central?”
Does “little watched” refer to the fact that only 3 episodes have aired?
And in regards to lowest common denominator animations from Comedy Central, I just assumed you were biased against Brickleberry (renewed for a 13-episode 2nd season) since you have excluded it and because it features a brown grizzly bear. A brown bear can’t make your list but I bet if a white polar bear was featured on the show, you would have that picture of that bear at the top of this post.
@Fake Me Out
The spell check on my phone admits both ‘canceled’ and ‘cancelled’, but when I ask to define ‘canceled’, it brings me to the definition for ‘cancelled’. So, they’re both correct but ‘cancelled’ with two L’s is more grammatically correct.
@Richard Steven Hack
The last few times you’ve posted on this thread, you’ve talked about Banshee, and you’ve used some… adult language that the spam filter is probably sensitive to. It’s not the filter, it’s probably you.
@Common Anomaly
Do you realize that this site’s symbol is a brown grizzly bear?
@Dan
I think there is a bigger distinction between winter & summer ratings for cable shows than we realize. We should give them a stronger boost than we would Friday shows. For example, TNT’s biggest hit, Rizzoli & Isles, sunk to the 0.8/0.9 range this fall. I think Dallas, with a 0.6/0.7 range, is doing just as good as any other of TNT’s summer dramas would in the winter, maybe better. So it’s a certain renewal.
I’m very cautious about making shows certain cancellation on cable. Who knows? Maybe TNT will give it an extended summer run to get a sampling. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened on networks much less lenient than TNT.
I’m confused. Are you agreeing with me or saying that they should be bubble shows?
I’m putting TLG on the bubble next week anyway because I just saw it got a 0.4.
Yeah, its ratings (at 80% of the scripted average), say tentative renewal, but TV Land just ordered to series a buzzy new sitcom, and they may want to clean house. Next fall (where Happily Divorced would start season 3) would be where they would put the new show, and I doubt they’d be able to resist pairing it with Hot in Cleveland. So, HD will definitely not end up being in the same slot next year. Where else would they put it then? At 11:00? I think they learned that lesson when Retired at 35 bombed. There’s a case to be made for HD’s cancellation, which means it should be on the bubble, thanks to it being on cable, where we don’t really know what could happen.
I’ll move it to the bubble for that reason. It could get additional episodes to air behind Wilfred.
What about Justified? I am thrilled the Americans was renewed since it is my second fav show, but why has FX not commented on Justified? It is my favorite show of all time!
Not renewing ‘The Americans’ for at least a second season would have been… unpatriotic! Seriously, though, not to name ‘The Mob Doctor’ from the get-go as ‘The American Mob Doctor’ was a huge mistake; with the latter we’d be now watching Grace and Franco back from their trip to Mexico unpacking souvenir sombreros.
@Nick – I meant that I agree that Bunheads is likely cancellation and Lying Game is likely renewal but anything is possible with ABC Family. They could easily axe or renew both. The most likely situation is that Bunheads is one and done like Jane By Design and Lying Game gets maybe 10 more episodes.
I agree in the long run Dallas is certain renewal though its ratings are less then perfect. With Monday Mornings horrible debut (lower than last season’s Leverage), I dont see how its anything but certain cancellation. Major Crimes, Dallas, and Perception all debuted much much better than Monday Mornings, why would TNT need to keep this one around? Its rare for TNT to have one and done shows but Monday Mornings reminds me of Trust Me, debuted soft, kept doing worse, then cancelled.
@Justified Fan – Justified will be renewed for a fifth season, maybe not today or tomorrow but probably sometime in March.
@Nick – Maybe TV land is trying to expand nights now that it has more comedies. Remember last year they only had 4 comedies. Hot in Cleveland, Happily Divorced, The Exes and Retired at 35. Then The Soul Man. With Retired at 35 cancelled, because it was obviously flopping, now they have 4 series again with another debuting in the fall. ts possible if Happily Divorced is renewed, TV land can either pair it on another night with The Exes or by itself. TV land doesnt need to air 3 comedies on one night.
@Dan
Eh. I just have a feeling that TNT may want to keep it around. It’s steady, and it’s only 0.2 behind Southland. That might just be Fan Excuse Bingo talking, though.
I forgot that they had the Exes. If they wanted to cut a show to make room for the new comedy, they’d have cut The Exes, which did slightly worse than Happily Divorced if you put in the winter factor. So, Happily Divorced will probably be back. It’s a likely renewal.
