Bubble Watch: 'Beauty and the Beast' Likely to be Canceled; 'The Following' Upgraded

When it comes to bubble status, like the Renew/Cancel Index we're focusing on the likelihood that a show will be renewed **for next season** (2013-14).  Certain shows are toss-ups where based on the ratings, the renewal decisions could go either way and not be surprising.

Here, “canceled” is used interchangeably with “won’t be renewed for next season” and is not meant to imply a show will be yanked off the schedule in the current season though obviously the two outcomes are not mutually exclusive. The semantics police and lawyers should feel free to break out the handcuffs and plead their cases in the comments.

This Isn't The Renew/Cancel Index

Though the basic methodology is the same (intra-network relative ranking of shows by adults 18-49 ),unlike the Renew/Cancel Index which predicts what would happen if the season ended now, Bubble Watch prognosticates about what will happen by May. The two are still usually closely aligned, and almost certainly very closely aligned towards the end of the season.

The Following

I upgraded The Following back to likely renewal. I know some will complain that it should be a “certain renewal” and the rebound last week was a great sign for its prospects. If the season ended today, of course it would be renewed. But, The Following still has 9 out of its 15 episodes left to air. Know with certainty, that any commenters complaining it should be listed as a certain renewal right now are much more certain about its future prospects than I am!

Cult

Normally I hold shows on the bubble when they first premiere, but I moved Cult right to likely cancellation. I have no quarrel with anyone who suggests it should already be a certain cancellation, I’m just giving that another week or two.

Beauty And The Beast Downgraded

I’d been tempted to downgrade Beauty And The Beast for a while. While it had been out-performing it’s “on the bubble peers” similar to last year’s The Secret Circle, I didn’t like Beauty And The Beast’s position relative to the other shows on the bubble due to the fact that it has the best lead-in (The Vampire Diaries) that the CW has to offer. With Beauty And The Beast pulling a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating on Thursday out of the 1.3 adults 18-49 rating The Vampire Diaries drew, even I’m a Retentionista!

NBC

Barring big changes to the ratings, I’m unlikely to move the NBC shows around much before The Voice and Revolution return. The comedies were in a range of 0.9-1.4. And sure, a 1.4 is 56% better than a 0.9, it’s still in a range where (in your best Billy Preston voices) you can sing “56% better than nothing is nothing.”

I still haven’t downgraded either Smash or Deception to certain cancellation, but you can chalk that up to inertia and/or apathy. And sure, Deception outperformed Smash by 33% last week (“33% better than nothing is nothing!”) but Deception had the much better lead-in than Smash.  Smash kept 100% of its lead-in, but in this case that isn’t good news.

Body Of Proof

It might irk Zero Hour fans that last week I moved it immediately to certain cancellation, but this week with similarly woeful ratings I have Body Of Proof on the bubble. But for now, there’s no history of listing Zero Hour as a likely or certain cancellation pretty much all season only to be proved wrong as is the case with Body Of Proof. View at as a one week sign of respect.

Batb has a huge fanbase that will support it no matter what negative reviews they get. We did not win PCA by a 10 million margin for nothing and we will fight for a second season. Beauty and the Beast has given us drama, action, romance and has kept us on the edge of our seats. We will go down fighting and will not be put off by people who have nothing better to do than criticize a show that they know absolutely nothing about!

  • Ultima

    @Liesl
Batb has a huge fanbase that…

… apparently can’t be bothered to watch the show on TV.

  • G Smith

If you have watched every BATB episode, you would love it too! I have been a big fan but after the last episode, that was the bomb!!! Don’t knock it until you tried it! :)

    @BatbFan
You realize I don’t care about your opinion, right?

I’m not sure, because you have a huge need to always think about all the comments about BATB, every forum post and I walk
Not even define what is that show like it, because every time you write is for littering on which I like

    “Rae
    Posted February 26, 2013 at 6:01 a.m.
It’s like 5 batb fans commenting with different names lol, it’s not easy to see That Because the phrasing is the same. You guys are ANNOYING and now not so classy, stop telling people to f *** or saying Themselves That They have no taste Because MOST of us can really see what a POS That show is. Get over yourselves! ”

Well I will say that I have no need of it, for it got that nickname to identify clearly what I can see is that every time you mention BATB always the same names they attack as if this were a field battle …

    and finally
    “Richard Steven Hack
Robert: WHERE IS MY POLL? You need to put up a simple poll. All those who like BATB specify Whether They are male or female.

Just look at the posts. Ninety percent of the people who like BATB are female. It’s a farce. ”

What’s wrong with a show that has more female fans? As I said in another post, I’m not blind I know he has his faults, but I still like it and would like to have another chance.
They are nothing but wishful thinking, not everyone has to agree with it, I do not understand or accept these attacks are unconscionable that throws many people here …
And I do not think that because you or others do not like sentencing should always BE CANCELLED, there are sooooo many shows they do not like, but I do so be canceled, people will see them for some reason

Greetings! “1 of the 5″ #BatB fans right here!! btw, me & my “4 friends” deserve a SHORTY AWARD for getting #BatB to TREND all afternoon ‘all by ourselves’ last Thursday when episode 14 aired!

Quite honestly, as long as this site has us ranked as ‘likely 2B cx’ you won’t see many of us here b/c it’s depressing. I’m sure you understand what it’s like to really enjoy your program & not be satisfied w/it’s ranking. There’s no sense in being ugly to my fellow #Beastie friends too. You like your shows 4 your reasons, we like ours 4 the classic love story that it represents and feel our lead actors are doing a STELLAR job of portraying the scripts given to them. Not one of wouldn’t do something different once in a while, but I’m a firm believer that ‘you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.’ It IS building momentum.. (whoa, is it EVER) and there’s SO MUCH story left to tell! We hope for MANY seasons to come & that may or may not happen. But, if you don’t follow the show from week-2-week, you aren’t seeing it evolve and, therefore, have no right to speak to it. I will not review other shows on these sites (especially shows I don’t watch) and, since it’s ‘TV by the Numbers’ anyway, what difference does it make. Why don’t we just agree to hope for the best 4 everyone and leave the ugliness out of it. In MY opinion (and, I HAVE watched #BatB all season long), it has it’s STRENGTHS & it has had it’s weaknesses. Personally (and, trust me, I’m NOT ALONE) I believe firmly that it’s STRENGTHS; @jayryan, Mr. Hotness Himself, @mskristinkreuk, A FIERCE/GRACEFUL PRESENCE, @austinbasis, OUR RESIDENT COMEDIC GENIUS, AND a TIMELESS, LOVE CONQUERS ALL[DESPITE COUNTLESS OBSTACLES] STORY) outweigh the weaknesses and, LASTLY, I’m seeing a lot LESS ‘weaknesses’ these days!! If you haven’t seen it lately.. then you are truely missing out, but, I won’t hold my breath for you to agree with me. To each his own. Just be sweet and behave. B&B has it’s following & according to this site, we may not have it much longer.. so, be kind.

Batb is a good show. no matter what happens to the show, we’ll support it all the way. we all have fave shows right? so just watch whatever u want to. all i wanna say is, its the only show that has a heart. with very collaborative group of people/artists. very interesting storylines. its brilliant! it deserves to stay on tv.

  • Tom

@ Anita “Quite honestly, as long as this site has us ranked as ‘likely 2B cx’ you won’t see many of us here b/c it’s depressing.”

You know, in spite of yourself, you may actually have unintentionally hit on the precise reason you shouldn’t be here. That is because this isn’t a fan site. It’s a ratings site. Hence the inclusion of “Numbers” in its title. It’s not about chicks swooning at Jay Ryan in front of their flat screens while clutching their teddy bears. If you can be bothered to consider some of those numbers, you’d have discovered that B&B did reasonably well for the first two episodes after it returned from its hiatus. However, it then plummeted to record lows in both ratings and viewership. To someone with the proper focus, that would suggest that a number of new or returning viewers decided the show wasn’t worthwhile and bailed. During its first three episodes, B&B had also plummeted from a 1.2 demo to a 0.6 demo. That’s a pretty good indication that B&B can’t hold an audience. Now, let’s talk about the audience.

The Nielsen demographics (demos) reported here are for viewers in the 18 – 49 demo. What’s clear from those demos is that B&B tends to settle in the 0.5/0.6 demo with around 1.5 million viewers. Recent trends suggest they’ll go lower. As Robert pointed out, that’s unacceptable for a program that has the CW’s highest rated show as a lead in. I suspect that the suits at the CW had considerably higher expectations for B&B. Since moving the show to a less advantageous timeslot would likely only make its rating worse, this show will, as Robert predicts, likely be cancelled. Finally, let’s talk about why you and those like you should go.

It’s fairly clear that a substantial amount of the hype over B&B in the social media comes from adolescent girls. It’s equally clear that they don’t count. Like it or not, the Nielsen ratings rule and they measure the viewing tastes of adults. So, if you have a curfew, you’re wasting your time commenting here about why Jay Ryan is at the end of your particular rainbow. Granted, there are also some adult women who watch B&B. but, there clearly aren’t enough cat ladies and grammar divas watching the show to keep it afloat. Although the members of the Babysitters Club like to brag about that big People’s Choice Award, remember that adults usually have more important things to do than pound on a virtual voting button 24/7. The PCA didn’t increase 18 – 49 viewership for B&B and neither does all that drivel on the social media. So, the bottom line is clear: Robert knows what he’s talking about and you clearly haven’t a clue. So, unless you’re a Nina Lisandrello lookalike, I’d advise you (and your equally unenlightened counterparts) to quit posting irrelevant remarks about a failing show on this site and look into finding a prom date.

  • C-A

Why the need to be so negative? I don’t like many shows: does that mean that I go around forums and websites to criticize them? No, because that would just make me look like a dumbass. So watch your fingers before you type people and just comment on how you loooove your show, and we’ll do the same.

With love, one of the 5 BATB fans.

  • Romina

I’m actually not an adolescent, I’m 26 years old and I really like Beauty and the Beast. I can also say that there are a lot of adult fans. Really there’s no need to trash the show, I don’t go about trashing other shows because I don’t care about them, I’m only interested in the one I like. Of course it’s not perfect but then again almost every show has good and bad things besides BATB it’s really improving! So just focus on talking about what you like that we’ll do the same.

  • BatbFan

Since the friend was late to review @ TOM BATB and their fans …

Could respect your arguments and your opinions, if you had argued only the issue of numbers and did not have that need morbid almost always offending people
And this is a free country, anyone can enter the forum that you want to review, if Anita is valid to say that Jay is saying so hot that I know is not offending anyone, is simply stating the reasons why he Like the series
So save your comments where they can and should review the people, because I could put a few reasons why you should be the friendliest stop here ….

  • Dan

@Kitsune – Fall ratings dont matter when current ratings are garbage NBC needs to look toward the future in terms of higher rated programming.

@Melanie – Why wouldnt CW move Supuernatural? They have a chance to use a hit like Arrow to launch a new series why continue to waste it on Supernatural. For example Vampire Diaries first season it was paired with Supernatural as VD was a new show, every subsequent season a new series has been in that slot in hopes it would become a hit. Nikita, The Secret Circle, and Beauty and the Beast none of which have become hits. However this wont stop CW from trying a new series in the Wed 9pm slot after Arrow next season.

  • Immaculate

“However, it then plummeted to record lows in both ratings and viewership.”

LOL. It’s a show in its first season. It’s silly to use the language “record” lows.

“During its first three episodes, B&B had also plummeted from a 1.2 demo to a 0.6 demo.”

BatB was the only CW show to premiere with the VP debate on every other major channel. That means that whoever didn’t watch the VP debate had only one other major channel to watch something else. Which means that its opening numbers were completely skewed.

“That’s a pretty good indication that B&B can’t hold an audience.”

It can hold a hater’s attention like yours which shows just how pathetic you are.

“It’s fairly clear that a substantial amount of the hype over B&B in the social media comes from adolescent girls. It’s equally clear that they don’t count. Like it or not, the Nielsen ratings rule and they measure the viewing tastes of adults.”

Or people who don’t have crappy Nielsen boxes and don’t plug in the numbers silly man. It’s time to move on from the crappy monopoly and its minimal sampling size. Also, unlike the other major networks, the CW just doesn’t consider Nielsen ratings, otherwise Nikita would have been gone a long time ago.

” Robert pointed out, that’s unacceptable for a program that has the CW’s highest rated show as a lead in.”

The lead in/Retentionist argument is completely fallacious. There is nothing logical about staying to watch another show after the one you want to watch has finished.

“People’s Choice Award, remember that adults usually have more important things to do than pound on a virtual voting button 24/7″

BatB also won four categories in the Spoiler TV awards where it wasn’t possible to repeat vote.

    Nice try hater.

BaTB has fell to a 0.5 way before spring, when TSC finally fell to that level. So I can see BaTB dropping to 0.4s and yes, 0.3s when spring comes. The show will be gone as it can’t benefit from tvd’s lead-in and it’s highly unlikely that it will get more than a 0.4s on another night.

  • Claudia

@Faye, and thats because you know it will go to a low of 0.3s do you even watch the show? do you really know how it is developing? its beyond exciting for us fans those 1.52 millions that watched last week wont miss a thing ab the next episode I can guarantee you that, and there is more fans building up after this 2 weeks hiatus, the show just got a huge amount of fans in the last month, and not only local but worldwide something TSC never did. OH Gosh get over comparing the two shows, BATB has dragged thisamount of fans and attention because of the main characters relationship, this show just gets better and better, just go to youtube, twitter and facebook. And doesnt matter if 90% of the fans are women, whats the problem most of the Arrow fan base are men…so everybody stop with the BS!!!!

  • BigBrotherFan

I’m pretty thrilled to see NASHVILLE (The best show on network TV) in the given status. I hope it can maintain it’s numbers all throughout spring but I must admit I am worried (BEING PAIRED WITH A RATINGS LOSER LIKE SUBERGATORY). If ABC cancels it I’m 110% done with that network. They screwed me when I started getting into TV at 10-years-old with the AMAZING SPORTS NIGHT, then THE NINE, then DIRTY SEXY MONEY, then MY GENERATION, 666 PARK AVE.. list goes on and on…NASHVILLE will be my final straw with that network.

Awwww…Look how much THE NEW NORMAL fell from prior positions. WHAT A FLOP! LOL The crazy fans can’t defend a 0.9 rating, SAME GOES WITH SMASH and smash and DECEPTION should not even be in the same category BUT I GET THE REASONS.

Nice to see Chicago Fire where it is.

wOOHOO! Whitney is doing better than THE NEW FLOP HAHA

GREAT the FOLLOWING got upgraded too! One of my other BIG SHOWS next to NASHVILLE.

I gave up on ARROW after episode 5, Amell is THE WORST ACTOR ON NETWORK TV and ruins the whole show FOR ME.

NIKITA SEASON 4 HERE WE COME!!!!!!! :)

  • BigBrotherFan

I would like to add GLEE should be cancelled. No excuses. It’s doing HORRIBLE out of AI. THE WORST!

  • Gary

Am I the only one that loves “SMASH”?

  • Justin121

Bubble Watch = CW fan forum.

    I’m out.

  • Win

Seems to me the CW got it wrong. They thought Cult would spawn a cult following, but it actually was BatB….

  • Tom

    @ Immaculate

One of the reasons you Beastlies never get any respect is because of your incessant lame comments. For example, crediting the Spoiler Awards. As in Spoiler TV, “A Largest Collection of TV spoilers and show information for the most popular shows on TV.” Really? That’s what you’re going with? How much more desperate can you get?

So, you also don’t like the Nielsens. The Beastlies can rig the PCA’s but, if the Nielsens don’t go their way, it’s supposedly because the polling methods are defective. Great logic.

Your reasoning about the B&B premiere is bizarre. What you’re apparently saying is that the premiere drew an artificially high audience because it was the only refuge for people who didn’t want to watch the VP debate. That assumption is completely absurd. There were plenty of other media outlets that didn’t carry the VP debate. Moreover, even if that weren’t true, it wouldn’t be a bad thing. By saying what you said, you end up rooting against your show. That’s just sad.

A “record low audience” means what it says. The lowest number of viewers in the show’s short pathetic existence. Since B&B is unlikely to see a second season, that will have to suffice.

And, of course, you’re not a retentionist. Why would you be? B&B is getting killed in the ( PM Thursday time slot. I guarantee you’d be saying the opposite if B&B ratings were similar to those of TVD. Figuring out how to use TVD as a gateway to another successful show is essential for the CW. That’s because keeping an audience is easier than attracting a new one from other networks. However, it’s obvious that B&B can’t hold the TVD audience or, for that matter, much of any audience.

It’s clear from your total inability to grasp logic that you’re exactly the type of adolescent homeroom princess who should be back on Spoiler.com wasting someone else’s bandwith. Now finish your homework and leave the adults to finish their Nielsen diaries.
