TV Ratings Sunday: Oscars Up From Last Year + 'The Amazing Race' Hits A Series Low (Updated)

ABC was number one among adults 18-49 and with with total viewers.

On ABC, The 85th Annual Academy Awards earned a 12.1 UPDATE: according to ABC, the Oscars earned a 13.0 adults 18-49 rating from 8:30 to 11:40PM . Last year's telecast scored a 11.7 adults 18-49. Your predictions were about right. Earlier in the night, the Red Carpet arrivals special earned a 5.0 at 7PM, a 6.7 at 7:30PM and a 9.2 at 8PM

The only original running against the Oscars was The Amazing Race, which earned a series low 1.8 adults 18-49 rating, down from last week's 2.5 adults 18-49 rating.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    @Rebecca, I’m glad you understand. People are starting to scale back, cutting down their cable bill. Emmy’s air on network TV, yet many are not familiar with these cable programs that it seems the voters are trying to promote. For example, the highest viewership that Homeland garnered last season was 2.36 million viewers, whereas Person of Interest garners 14-15 million viewers weekly.

    Secondly, I feel some shows on cable have a unfair advantage having to only produce 10-13 episodes per season. And then the voters seem to go for shows they feel to be groundbreaking. Whereas a regular cop show may be of quality but since it is not considered to be “hip” or “fresh” then it is ignored. The same goes for family comedies. That is turning viewers off. Get rid of the politics, nominate some shows which are considered “comfort food” that viewers actually enjoy but is of high quality as well.

    I would like to see all the Best Actress nominees coming from network TV. There are enough quality performances to fill the entire available slots

    Thanks for the compliment. I like your suggestion of moving H5O to Sunday. I think it may work well after The Amazing Race. It has always had to face Monday Night Football so it may do well against the Sunday Edition.

    I wonder how Golden Boy will perform tonight. Will CBS still be eager to move it to Friday. If so, and it continues to perform decently, I can see it staying there for next season.
