3/1 Update: Zero Hour has been officially canceled. Only the timing was any surprise at all.
-
The Cancellation Bear considers the prediction of certain cancellation for Body Of Proof to be his biggest miss of last season*.

Why did it happen? Even in hindsight, the bear's not certain. Was it the three episode ratings recovery at the end of the show's Spring run? Was it the California production tax credit? Nobody who really knows is talking to the bear.

But once burned on a show, the bear's twice shy. Otherwise, the 1.2 adults 18-49 premiere rating last week for Body Of Proof would have it predicted as certain to be canceled.

Instead, for now, the bear will make it only likely to be canceled. Stay tuned as the bear keeps his eye on the salmon, er show.

*While the bear piled up 3 misses on CW shows last season, they were all toss-up shows that were noted close calls and the bear's final guesses all went the wrong way. Robert leaned the other way on two of them and only missed one CW prediction.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Happy

    Well done.

  • Don

Some suggested putting Body of Proof on Fridays at 9. That was BofP’s Original timeslot but another show got canceled and BofP replaced it.

    Here’s my schedule for ABC.

    ABC Fall 2013

    Sunday
    7:00 – America’s Funniest Home Videos
    8:00 – Once Upon A Time
    9:00 – Gothica (New Show)
    10:00 – Nashville (New Time)

    Monday
8:00 – Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Castle

++Keep the same and don’t mess with it.

    Tuesday
8:00 – Dancing with the Stars – Results Show
    9:00 – SHIELD (New Show)
10:00 – Big Thunder (New Show)

+++SHIELD & Big Thunder (Based on the Disneyland ride, sort of like Pirates of The Caribbean was based on a Disneyland ride) would create a action block that might work. Frankly I could not think of where else to put SHIELD and work.

    Wednesday
    8:00 – The Middle
    8:30 – Suburgatory
    9:00 – Modern Family
9:30 – Trophy Wife (New Show)
    10:00 – Revenge

+++Put Revenge in it’s old timeslot.

    Thursday
8:00 – Murder In Manhattan (New Show)
    9:00 – Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 – Scandal

+++I figure Murder In Manhattan about a mother-daughter detective team might work there, and be a procedural which ABC needs.

    Friday
    8:00 – Last Man Standing
    8:30 – Malibu County
    9:00 – Shark Tank / Primetime
    10:00 – 20/20

+++Don’t think ABC will try bringing back TGIF at the 9 PM hour.

    Saturday
ABC Saturday Night Football / ABC Saturday Night Movie

    BEAR STAY AWAY FROM NASHVILLE

May I throw some HONEY all of THE NEIGHBORS? While your at it SNACK on THE TASTE too!

  • geri

I love Body of Proof. I have waited all season for it to return and I like the new additions to the cast.

  • Josh

If I was in charge at ABC and wanted to bring back the TGIF line up it would be as follows:
    8-Last Man Standing
    8:30- Malibu Country
    9- The Neighbors
    9:30-The Middle
    10-Modern Family
    10:30-Happy Endings

I really think this line up would get people to watch tv as a family on Fridays again. It would also free up time slots on other days for newer shows or struggling shows. For example Thursday could be:

    8- Grey’s Anatomy
    9-Body Of Proof
    10-Scandal

  • HAPPY!

    @Josh

I don’t see any reason for ABC to move Modern Family to Friday at 10. It is doing great in its current time slot and it wouldn’t help ABC to move it to Fridays.

  • NE1

Nashville is the best new hour long of the year. It will hold up better a few years in, and perform well in syndication. I’d upgrade to ‘certain’.

  • Fred

OUAT just sank to another series low last night.
Wonder is ABC is still working on the spinoff?

Last night’s ep (like last week) was fantastic. The millions of fans that gave up should catch up with OUAT soon. It really is on fire now. The slow plots earlier this season have certainly hurt the ratings.

    Last Resort 0.57
    Zero Hour 0.58
    Happy Endings 0.59
    Body of Proof 0.6
    Malibu Country 0.62
    Private Practice 0.63
    Red Widow 0.7
    Last Man Standing 0.71
    The Neighbors 0.91
    Revenge 0.93
    Nashville 0.94
    Castle 1.01

    The Middle 1.13
    Once Upon a Time 1.25
    Scandal 1.36
    Grey’s Anatomy 1.5
    Modern Family 2.04

  • Josh

    @Happy

They should move it to Friday at 10 to get more families to stay in on Fridays and have a family night.

  • HAPPY!

    @Josh
For a show like Modern Family which is geared for families, 10 is too late. It is not necessary to movement MF to Friday because the TGIF lineup isn’t as important as the current Wednesday comedy lineup. ABC wouldn’t kill their successful Wednesday comedy block in favor of a more risky and less helpful Friday block.

  • Bunny

I just watched Body Of Proof. DeLany come off as a snobish bitch. No wonder it is going to ne cancelled. Mark Valley is on of my favorite actors.I wont continue to watch it unless her characters changes. She is over the top with her crude remarhs they are not cute or impressive.

  • Bob

In recent episodes, Megan has become so supercilious, obnoxious, snotty, snippy, arrogant as to make the show unwatchable. If nobody wants to wathc such behavior, the show surely will be cancelled. And I’m a Dana Delaney fan from way back.

  • 12phillies

Why r they canceling red widow people r stupid u rather watch these stupid reality shows like jersey shore people just don’t get a clue and don’t cancel mc I like Reba !!!

  • Ralph

I agree that B o P should be on a death watch. I’ve watched the show since its inception and liked the cast changes for this season. But Megan Hunt has become so annoying that I literally want to punch my TV when I see her. “Unwatchable” is the right description. I understand it is just television but Megan’s instrusiveness is so far off the truth of how a case would be handled that it makes it difficult to suspend disbelief. I still watch only because my wife likes to watch it but even she used the “B” word to describe Megan during last night’s show. Not sure I can take much more.

  • angela

Please keep this show it has gotten
A lot better than last season! More
    Intense better contents. Besides
ABC doesn’t have very many quality
Dramas . So it would be a mistake
    to cancel it!
