With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If CSI really does collapse on the second half of the season as last night suggested, then it really can move to Friday. If that happens, Elementary will actually have a very decent shot at remaining on a weekday, because it is actually looking better now than it did a few weeks ago when it was basically posting the same numbers as H50 and CSI but in a more favorable situation. Also, if it stays, it would mean that a comedy expansion on thursday would require only 2 new shows (1 hour) which would be acceptable for CBS standards I guess. I would go with:

    How I Met Your Mother
    Friends with Better Lives
    2 Broke Girls
    Mike and Molly
    Beverly Hill Cops

    Person of Interest
    Criminal Minds

    Two and a Half Men
    The Big Bang Theory
    Super Clyde

The Good Wife [13 eps]/ Undercover Boss
    Blue Bloods

    The Amazing Race/Survivor
    Hawaii Five-0
    The Mentalist

  • Tim

Well, if the choice is between “The Mentalist,” “The Good Wife,” and “Golden Boy,” it will be GB.

  • Mike Cloyd

VEGAS IS GREAT! Dennis Quaid and cast Compliment one another. Needs to be renewed

  • Dolores Charnock

I love the show Vegas and can’t believe they are going to cancel it :( I think I am going to go back to not watching television!! I can’t stand these reality shows and they keep cancelling the shows worth watching! Boo to whoever makes these decisions!

  • Vegas

Vegas is the best on CBS. The Good Wife is old and predictable and the characters minus Noth are dull. The Mentalist and Elementary are simply STUPID!!!

  • Brenda

If you cancel vegas or csi ny I will begin watching nbc and not your network. I am a loyal fan however I feel you are not being loyal to me if you cancel vegas or csi ny. The ball is now in your court. I will either continue to be loyal to your network or transfer my loyality to another network. Please do not make me change my loyality!!!

  • Don

If CBS does cancel Vegas maybe NBC or ABC could pick it up and switch networks. Been done in the past. It’s not like ABC and especially NBC have had ratings success with new shows other then Revolution. Heck, NBC could leave it at Tuesdays at 10 and get higher ratings then they got now.

  • C

I hope Vegas doesn’t get cancelled..Dennis Quaid/Jason O’Mara and the young fella(the one that gets all the ladies) are few of the reasons to watch the show. The Good Wife is running out of steam because late airings, due to football, couldn’t have help the ratings.

  • janis

Looks like they better solve the Red John mystery.

    CBS Fall 2012

    7:00 – 60 Minutes
8:00 – The Amazing Race / Undercover Boss
9:00 – The Mentalist (New Time)
    10:00 – Backstrom (New Show)

+++New show based on the book series with a built in audience and might be a good fit with The Mentalist.

    8:00 – How I Met Your Mother
8:30 – The Crazy Ones (New Show)
    9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 – Mike & Molly
    10:00 – Hawaii Five-O

+++Figured the Robin Williams Comedy would go good right after the final season of How I Met Your Mother.

    8:00 – NCIS
    9:00 – NCIS: LA
10:00 – Beverly Hills Cop (New Show)

+++Figure Beverly Hills Cop would be a good fit here.

    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – Two And A Half Men
    9:00 – Person of Interest
    10:00 – Elementary

+++Keep Wednesday and Thursday the same and don’t mess with it.

8:00 – NCIS: RED (New Show)
9:00 – CSI: NY (Now Time and Final Season.)
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

+++Final Season of CSI: NY, ending in last Friday of November Sweeps. I feel having the new NCIS spinoff would be an aggressive move that could work. Certainly think it’d work better then putting it on Tuesday with the other NCIS Shows.

    8-10 – Repeats
    10:00 – 48 Hours

+++A case could be made for new programming from 8 to 10 but I doubt CBS would. If they did a live event show. I think having a CBS Saturday Night Fights, boxing or mixed martial arts, would be a good fit and compete well with ABC Saturday Night Football.

The Good Wife, Rules of Engagement, Intelligence, Reckless, and The Advocates.

I’m looking at the breakdown of the demographics for Vegas vs GB’s debut and I’m thinking Vegas gets kept. Golden didn’t light it up even though the promotion was significant and among the CBS core viewers in the older demographic, Vegas actually outperformed the new show. I hope they give it another season and then play it regularly to see if it can pick up the younger audience. The show is a bit sophisticated for many as it has some symbolism and writing based on dramatized history. The audeince would seem to be a good fit with the NCIS tandem if it was allowed to develop-almost like Leverage did for TNT. It had a solid few years until the costs for the on-air talent went up and made pretty decent money for the network.

  • Jarrod

Vegas is an amazing show and it will be a shame if it’s canceled. Come on CBS end the “Golden Boy,” but not one of the best shows on your network.

  • 9Blu

So for anyone holding out hope for CSI NY: CSI:NY Seasons 1-9 (UPC: 032429134745) has showed up on the DVD/Bluray release schedule for June 25th. Never a good sign when your show shows up in a complete series set :-(

If it were a choice between Vegas and Golden Boy, you might have a point. But it isn’t. Both are bear chow.

  • bluegrassbetty

I loved the first episode of “Golden Boy” why is it assumed it will fail?

  • Elijah

Because haters who are crying that CSI NY won’t get a billionth season, or whatever season that show is on, have an irrational hate for it, and love to take it out on innocent shows. Plus networks now a days expect to shows to automatically pull ridiculous unrealistic ratings from the first episode, and since they don’t give shows time to grow, they wonder why they’re losing record amounts of money and people are starting mass boycotts and moving to networks like HBO. Just a few years ago a show was cancelled if it didn’t hit a 3.0 in the 18-49 in the 10pm slot, now anything above a 1.5 in the 10 pm slot is considered a mega hit. And they claim that viewership isn’t going down at all (HA!!!!)

They’re going to cancel Vegas for not getting the ratings that the Big Bang Theory gets, but they seem to forget that not even the Big Bang Theory got the ratings it gets now in it’s first season. Remember Seinfeld or Cheers?

  • Holly

I loved the first episode of “Golden Boy” why is it assumed it will fail?

Its premiere got rather low ratings and they are extremely unlikely to get better after the premiere, especially with a move to Fridays.

  • Jon

Why not shift Vegas to Friday nights and have it air either before or after blue bloods. It would most likely pull in similar numbers, since they both seem to skew to an older viewing audience. It just seems to make more sense than premiering another new show on Friday night that they will have to cancel after a few episodes. It’s too bad they didn’t keep Ghost Whisperer around for a few more seasons. That time slot is doomed since it’s been gone.

  • Elijah

Cancel CSI NY and put Vegas on Fridays. Oh, wait, that would make sense! My bad for thinking logically.
