With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @ 20mg

First CSI and Criminal Minds will stay where they are. The two are doing a great job.

NCIS: Los Angeles won’t move to Friday ! It’s CBS’s #2 Drama and where would you air Undercover Boss if you move a Show with a full season order in its slot ? The best bet is to Premiere a new drama on Friday at 8.

If CBS expands its comedy hour, I don’t see The Big Bang Theory at 9. It will stay at 8 because it could help a new comedy at 8:30. Two and a Half Men moves to 9 and Mike & Molly to 9:30. I think CBS needs to Renew Rules of Engagement to air it on Monday at 8:30. Then, Premiere a new Comedy after 2 Broke Girls at 9:30.

Person of Interest on Wednesday at 8 is a smart move but you need to air Survivor in the fall. I think it could be great on Sunday at 9 after The Amazing Race.

You can Premiere two new dramas on Tuesday at 8 and 9. CBS did it in 2009 and both Shows were Renewed.

  • Holly

CBS premiered 3 dramas in the fall of 2009. You forgot Three Rivers.

  • Holly

    Nevermind, misread that….

Some posts have suggested moving POI to Wed at 8pm. I disagree that it would work at that hour & think Wed at 9pm followed by CM at 10pm. This will then allow CBS to expand their comedy block on Thur to 2 hrs. At 8pm I could see either NCIS:LA or NCIS Red on Wed. Survivor could go to Sun to either follow Amazing Race @ 9pm or have it timeshare with AR @8pm. As widely expected CSI will move to Fri replacing NY.

  • Billy

I hope CSI:NY gets one more year.

  • NE1

I just can’t with Dennis Quaid.. Keeping my fingers crossed for Rules of Engagement, and finally back in to 2 Broke Girls, after not liking a comment they once made about fag hags being fat and coke addicted(i’m guessing bad writer).

  • cuban

Vegas is one of the best new shows this season. I always look forward to the next episode. Also enjoy watching all of the CSI’s programs. Please don’t even think about cancelling The Good Wife.

  • Ken

If the five green smiley faces are telling me anything, it’s that my two favorite shows on CBS Two Broke Girls and Mike & Molly will very likely be coming back next season, because those shows rock, and so do virtually every show on CBS that rocks. CBS ROCKS!

  • Ed

Why is there such a disparity in the status of Blue Bloods and CSI: NY?

  • Holly

Why is there such a disparity in the status of Blue Bloods and CSI: NY?

Blue Bloods is one season away from syndication. And CSI: NY, being that much older, is more expensive.

  • Cara

Vegas is a very good drama, with Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jason O’Mara! I really enjoy this new drama. I hope this show stays around for another season! CSI: NY season finale was given a proper closure 2 weeks ago. I would not be surprised that this one will get cancelled!

  • John S

Every week I really look forward to watching Vegas. I can’t believe they are going to cancel it. I haven’t watched a series in years until Vegas and when I finally do watch one they cancel it! It’s authentic in the way they show how Vegas was in the 60’s. To me it’s the type of show you look forward to seeing each week. CBS please listen to your viewer and keep Vegas on the air!

  • TheManWithThePlan

The Mentalist already has a renewal contract for a 6th season from last year’s renewal agreements. Maybe you should do more research before you make a prediction which doesn’t even have relevance.

  • Bill Gorman

“The Mentalist already has a renewal contract for a 6th season from last year’s renewal agreements. Maybe you should do more research before you make a prediction which doesn’t even have relevance.”

Please don’t bring that nonsense from a random tweet around here.

If that was actually the case, it would have been widely reported.

  • Scot

I guess the “kids” have taken over the ratings. I love Vegas and many of my “boomer” friend did too. But with these asinine reality shows and crap like two broke girls on what do you expect. If it was on Fox it would have lasted like Fringe did ! Dumb move CBS !

  • Holly

Complaining about the abundance of reality shows on CBS just makes you look silly. Out of the 19 available primetime hours (not counting Saturdays), 16 were scripted this fall. That’s the same as CBS premiered in most of the ’80s including Saturdays.

  • Alan Ross

Please do not cancel Vegas, it is great show played by wonderful actors

  • Carol

I think it is terrible Vegas will be going off the TV and a stupid show such as Big Bang Theory has to be on two or three times a night. Take it off along with How I met your Mother.

  • PeterD

I don’t understand why CBS would cancel out a show like Vegas when it has not even been given a fair chance to have at least had a second season running, too introduce a new show like Golden Boy ?? Give me a break, isn’t their enough police drama’s on at the present like NYPD Blue, NCI, CSI, Hawaii 5-0, and to replace Vegas with another Police Drama show is going a bit too the extreme I feel. Vegas was a show that was suppose to be presenting how it originally all got started and the people who were involved with so much crime and cutthroat action in it’s very beginning, and too cancel it on it’s first run, what are these producers or show co-ordinators thinking about ??? CBS does have great entertainment, but for lack of a better way of putting this, someone in that organization needs to take a hard look at some of the shows that I feel, have run way beyond their ideas, scripts, that I feel are going nowhere’s. The Good Wife is another prime example of CBS shelving it…BAD IDEA !!

  • Breadman1988

Never fails, get interested in the show Vegas and they cancel it. Network has to promote the idiot shows, M&M, Two broke girls, and Two men. Nohing but crude humor and fat jokes.
