With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

My husband and I liked Vagas couldn’t wait to get to bed and watch it.Love those old time shows. Love the Mentalist also. Please keep them on.. Thanks Gdavis

  • bellabella

Are they going to cancel the best show on TV “Vegas”? They must be kidding, this is the only show worth watching. The stories were great. Love the old cars, songs and outfits too. So they’re going to replace it with another “Pretty boy” show, like we dont have enought of them?. I watched part of “Golden Boy”, and just couldnt stomach it. The guy cant act, its obvious thats not why he got the role. And the story was really dumb….

  • bellabella

BTW, feel free to cancel “The Good Wife” (has slipped badly, was good in the beginning) and “The Mentalist” which is really just plain silly.

  • bellabella

2 Broke, 2 1/2 Men, mostly trash. Mike and Molly, I used to love that show, now its getting trashy too. I guess thats the trend, going to trash.

  • Steve

Vegas is one very good crime drama. Compared to Mike And Molly, Broke Girls and Two and a Half Men, it should have Genius Status. Please CBS reconsider. The story line is gripping and makes the audience think

  • Carla Willey

Why are you canceling “Vegas”. Tuesday’s is my favorite CBS night for 3hrs; BUT the past 2 weeks I have had to turn the channel to ABC @ 9pm/cst since you took off “Vegas”. Please put it back on!

  • Ron B

My vote goes to Vegas staying, it is a great show. Can’t believe they want to cancel it. As far as Rules of Engagement goes, it won’t be missed.

  • Jeff

Can’t believe Vegas is going to be cancelled. It’s the only show on cbs with some class. People don’t appreciate good work when they see it. Vegas was written by some of same people as Goodfellas and Casino. Come on CBS!

  • Drdenny

I like Vegas and I think it is premature to cancel. They need to develop the characters a bit more but the cast is really excellent. Too bad some shows don’t get the time they need and others hang on way past their story-line needed to end.

  • David Gammon

Sorry to see most of my favorite shows being cancelled. This network has not been known for making the best decisions. That is why CBS stand for “Crappy Business Solutions”. Guess I will call the sponsors and tell them how I feel and that maybe they should switch advertising to the many other networks.

  • dman577

POI rules and Vegas is a close second. Isn’t time for a Soprano’s reunion… Tony gets even!

  • buckeyepilot

If you DVR shows, do they show up on ratings? I am so disappointed with the Vegas decision. Maybe another network (hint NBC) can pick it up. Would do better than most shows on NBC.

  • Jim

“Complaining about the abundance of reality shows on CBS just makes you look silly.”

Why would complaining about the abundance of reality shows on CBS make anybody look silly? Why do we have any reality shows period? They all suck.

  • rayMONDo

Vegas is a great show with characters that can actually act. The Golden boy show really sucks. The guy cant act, but oh, he has a pretty face. There enough closeups of his face to make you throw up.
    Please you gotta keep Vegas.

  • Jim

  • Jenn

I don’t think they should cancel Vegas. My husband and I think it’s an excellent show with a great story line. Please don’t cancel it!!

  • ” BJ “

Are you people nuts to cancel Vegas. I rarely watch TV but Vegas got me back in a big way for that full hour. It is the best TV show in probably twenty years. Instead you keep ” How I Met Your Mother ” It don’t get any worse than that.

  • lavonne

i cannot believe they would cancel vegas – best show ever – can cancel those fake reality shows – what a joke

  • ” BJ “

You should cancel Undercover Boss since the gig is up anyway. Everyone has seen the show so many times , how could you possibly fool anyone. Use the time slot for a quality show like VEGAS.

  • Christie

speaking as someone who grew up in Vegas I think its a great show that has historical value and a good story line
