With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

As one baby-boomer just can’t believe they would drop Vegas. Really miss DQuaid and the show. Was nice to have a drama that covered our time frame and a touch of long gone western touch to boot.

by the way two and a half men mentalist would die

  • Marshall

They can’t cancel Vegas…..it was just getting good…..get rid of CSI or Hawaii5-0 or Elementary…..ya gotta keep Vegas around for another season….

  • Edd 2

Vegas is a great show , why would it be cancelled ??? I wonder who makes these decisions and if they are aware of what the viewing puplic actually watch or if they limit their scope to the folks that watch nothing but re-runs and Dancing with the Stars !

  • nancy#

I love Vegas! Its a great show if others would take a few minutes to watch they’d think so too!

  • Tessa

I really liked Vegas and hoped it would be renewed. Interestingly, I never liked westerns or Vegas type settings, but really love this tv show. I think it was extremely well cast, and I like the story lines. Very disappointed in CBS for not giving it a chance. bummer.

  • nancy chaunce

Don”t cancel Vegas – finally a cop show with some substance

  • Frank Bear

I am chagrined that one would even think of putting Vegas on the chopping block! I find it to be reflective of the time and geographic eras of the development of the city of Las Vegas. There is strong depth of the character development and there ongoing interaction from episode to episode. It’s most refreshing when compared to the drivel that one is forced to watch in the “reality shows” and most of the current “cop shows”. I urge you to renew Vegas.

  • ” BJ “

Well folks , the first stupid thing that CBS did was talk about canceling Vegas. Now the second stupid thing they have done is put it on Friday nights during the summer when nobody is home which they know will kill it and sometimes take it off to dub in a sports show. If I didn’t know better there is some one person in charge with an idiot brain that is on a mission to kill it regardless of how good it is. I hope another network picks it up and kills CBS’s viewing audience.I know they won’t get me with the garbage that they put on.

  • Gravitron2002

I can’t believe Vegas is certain to be cancelled. It’s a really good show. Why would CBS cancel it? I also can’t believe CSI:NY is likely to be cancelled. It’s also a good show and shouldn’t be cancelled. As for The Mentalist, I’m predicting that it will be renewed. People like it too much and it has a good viewer base. Plus, the show is in it’s 5th season and yet nowhere near to the reveal of Red John, so it would be premature for CBS to cancel it now without reveal Red John and having Jane and Red John battle it out one last time.

  • Allison “Vegas girl”

Love that Vegas is back!!! Such a great show CBS better keep it or they’ll lose yet another viewer. Love it!
