With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

To those who say that Vegas “just didn’t find an audience”, I’d say 10 million+ viewers IS an audience. It just doesn’t happen to be a young audience. That the show is set in the early 60’s, probably turns the “children (18-34)” off. No history lesson for them. I STILL think CBS will keep Vegas, even if it is sent to Friday, and drop others from the mix. Star power with Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklas will keep it alive. Plus, it’s a newer show. The other shows being considered are longer in the tooth and in my opinion, more likely to be dropped, unless they are close to some syndication milestone and need more episodes to reach it.

  • DW

whos going to be more upset.

  • DW

ugh i hit the wrong button. ok whos going to be more upset. TM fans that their show got cancelled or POI fans because their show is moving to sundays at 9. i can hear it it now “no its not dont say that”. it is kiddies. TGW

  • DW

is going bye bye and they need a proven hit in that slot. and no TM is not a hit. it was. not anymore.

  • DW

vegas is too expensive for it to keep going. and why its doing badly is theres no story.

  • Pepper

I think TGW will be cancelled, not sure yet about Golden Boy

  • cas

I just hope The Mentalist doesn’t get canceled. So my question is, even though I don’t watch it, Rules of Engagement seems to get decent ratings, always over a 2.5 in the demo, so why is it always on the chopping block? Is it because it is on CBS they expect the ratings to be higher?

  • Elijah

This site keeps brainwashing people into thinking Vegas is going to be cancelled, thus preventing people from watching it, thus lowering it’s ratings. It’s a shame this site has an irrational hate for Vegas.

  • Holly

It’s always a bit shocking to me how much power people think this site has…

“This site keeps brainwashing people into thinking Vegas is going to be cancelled, thus preventing people from watching it, thus lowering it’s ratings. It’s a shame this site has an irrational hate for Vegas.”

That is of course 100% bats in the belfry crazy, but it’s not unique!

  • Tommy M.

I’m still on the fence about RoE, it has proven to be a solid bench player for them and they actually needed it this season. I think it’s best chances at another season is if CBS expands their comedy lineup.

  • Tommy M.

I didn’t know Vegas had any following let alone such an insane one!

  • federo

what´s the “Curse of Ugly Betty”?

  • Keyser

I don’t get it as the storyline for Vegas has been outstanding the last few episodes!

  • Tommy M.

    @ Keyser,
Vegas’ ratings started bad and once that happened it’s very rare for a show to grow no matter how outstanding the story line gets. There are a few exceptions to this like Scandal, but that’s why they are called exceptions because it’s rare!

If Vegas can hold its ratings it would be a success on Fridays, would do better than CSI: NY has recently. I like Vegas a lot better than their other new drama Elementary, dropped it after the pilot.

  • Ultima

If Vegas can hold its ratings it would be a success on Fridays

If the sun rises in the west, then…

“If Vegas can hold its ratings it would be a success on Fridays”

Except that no show holds its ratings when moved to Fridays. BTW, if Vegas can triple its ratings, it would be a success on Tuesdays.

  • PurpleDrazi

“WooHoo!! My show’s so AWESOME, the laws of physics don’t even apply!!”

LOL! Shepherd, have you been taking some of The Old Man’s meds? ;-)
