With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

To those who say that Vegas “just didn’t find an audience”, I’d say 10 million+ viewers IS an audience.

You have point. But “audience” can mean differently depending on the topic of discussion. When we talk about books, audience means the readers; about radio, audience means the listeners; in theater, audience means the group of people directly watching the content and so on. Its meaning could also depend on the context. Since we are talking about TV and the audience that matter are the young adults ratings, I thought I was clear since I was talking about Vegas’ cancellation.

    @ Shepherd

You are DREAMING if you think Vegas is going to rebound – it is DONE. My wife and I really like Dennis Quaid (Frequency, Soul Surfer, The Rookie, etc.); however we began watching Vegas and could only stomach 3-4 episodes. Chiklis was the best character on the show and other characters were enjoyable as well, but Quaid’s character was written sooooo poorly. He seemed angry all the time and why was he grunting so much when he spoke. THAT is the main reason we stopped watching – because of his grunting and rough voice. Is he still acting like that?

By the way – POI is best scipted show on TV by a mile IMO… this last episode that Jonathan Nolan directed was FANTASTIC!!!

  • PurpleDrazi

Why in the world would CBS move POI to Sunday? It is doing well for them on a hotly contested night. It would make no sense for them to put it on Sunday.

  • Sharon

Why cancel Vegas? It’s one of my favorites!!!!
Do the networks listen to the people? DON’T cancel VEGAS.

  • wallaby2012

I enjoy Vegas, but I also enjoyed Pan Am ;.)

  • Jonay

CBS will probably cancel The Good Wife the Mentalist is something CBS will try and revive!!!

  • Ultima

Do the networks listen to the people?

Yes, they renew the shows that people watch and cancel the ones that they don’t…

  • NJ Viewer

I like “Vegas”, but then, almost every show I like gets canceled.

  • Ray

You’re supposed to be a prophet, not a conspiracy theorist.

  • omabin

    My dream schedule for CBS:

    How I Met Your Mother
    Friends with Better Lives
    2 Broke Girls
    Mike and Molly
    Beverly Hill Cops

    Person of Interest
    Criminal Minds

    Two and a Half Men
    Super Clyde
    The Big Bang Theory

The Good Wife (13 eps)/Undercover Boss
    Blue Bloods

    Survivor/The Amazing Race
    Hawaii Five-0
    The Mentalist

  • Shepherd

It’s funny that you actually took me seriously! I knew at least one foolish soul would, so thanks. :)

Actually, I think the fact that my ‘med’ source has been dry for a couple of months played a large part in my silliness. I figured even Vegas deserved one crazy fan, if only for a moment. Who knew that people like Elijah and catsrule actually existed? ;-)

  • Holly

I figured even Vegas deserved one crazy fan, if only for a moment.

Have you not visited the CBS renewal/cancel threads lately?

  • Cyrax86

Interesting, according to The Futon Critic, the finale of The Good Wife is scheduled for 4/28, so it’ll air almost uninterrupted from now on but it won’t air during May sweeps.

  • Holly

The Futon Critic doesn’t actually know when the episodes will air until the official information goes out. Beyond that is just guessing.

  • Cyrax86

@Holly, But then they usually have “projected date” listed next to the numbers, but that’s not the case with TGW, maybe the official information is indeed out now?

  • Shepherd

Well played. :) Actually, this is only my second week of regular visits to the renewal/cancel & Bubble threads. Although in my defense, I was going for B&TB/ Ringer ‘crazy’.

  • Shepherd

Well, maybe my third week of regular visits. Anything beyond yesterday seems like last year these days, it’s hard for me to keep track.

  • JBT3618

Why did they cancel Vegas? It was one on the best shows. Better than the Good Wife, rules of engagement, two broke girls.

  • Ultima

But then they usually have “projected date” listed next to the numbers, but that’s not the case with TGW

Because they’re projecting the two-hour finale of The Amazing Race to air in The Good Wife’s timslot on 5 May and the Survivor finale to air the following week.

  • Ultima

    Why did they cancel Vegas?

They didn’t. The renew/cancel index is just a prediction of what’s going to happen.
