With the premiere tonight of CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy, it seems well timed to take a closer look at the hopeful comments in the vein of "If Golden Boy fails, X will be saved".

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 473rd time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and one of The Good Wife, The Mentalist or Golden Boy.
While the most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another Spring drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Please cancel “elementary”. It’s insulting to Sherlock Holmes. Keep Vegas instead.

  • Freda Henderson

Vegas is my favorite show. I hate to see it cancelled.

  • Jimmy Atnip

The only 2 shows on regular TV that I lke are the original NCIS and Vegas. Cancelling Vegas would really suck.

  • Nick

    @del

.correct me if I’m wrong but a 3.0 rating (18-49) of 3.5 million is the same as 1.5 of 10 million.

    You are wrong.

How do I know? See Harry’s Law, which had a 1.0 rating & 9 million viewers on NBC, and was cancelled for Smash (2.2 rating & 5 million viewers), Grimm (1.6 rating & 4 million viewers), Parenthood (1.8 rating & 5 million viewers), and Law & Order: SVU (1.6 rating & 6 million viewers). If a 1.0/9 mill isn’t doing better than 1.8/5 mil, 3.0/3.5 mil (which doesn’t happen, BTW) is 100% doing way better than 1.5/10 mil.

(All #s are approximate, so please don’t tell me I’m off by 0.2 or 1 million)

  • Pissed

I can’t beleve every time I start to like a program on CBS they pull it.

  • DW

all networks are going to be throwing away millions of dollars every year on pilots that do not get picked up.

  • Holly

    @DW,

You’re right. The TV business is a gamble. But that’s no reason to throw good money after bad on a proven failure.

  • Pat50

Can’t believe they are canceling Vegas. We love that show and look forward to watching it after watching both NCIS. Don’t plan on watching Golden Boy, couldn’t say much about the previews. Keep Vegas.

  • Nancy Athy

Vegas is a great show with good stories and great actors. Each show ends with me wanting to know what will happen next. This show does NOT deserve to be cancelled.

  • Najib

Vegas was a unique show very exciting, we were looking forward for the new episode. it is better than reality TV. it was PG13 almost anybody can watch. It is a mistake to cancel at least finish the story give it an end

  • Sandra

Very disappointed Vegas is not on tonight, and also the rumors it will be cancelled. At least it was a different cop show and had some character, where cops show are all the same. The scenery was very enjoyable in Vegas. And I sure do not want to here The Good Wife may be cancelled. That is the best “soap opera” going. CBS had the best line up of shows this season, why make changes!

  • Wr Hansen

Keep Vegas on its the closest thing to real happenings

  • tye

Im sorry CBS, but I thing that ending “Vegas” is a dumb move. Tht is a great show! I would much rather watch it than “CIS”. I think that its time slot is what is killing the ratings. If where on earlyer, and on a different night, it would probably do great. Im sad to see it go.

  • Angeline

I have not seen good dramatic or comical programs in about 20 years. My age is 57. There are so many channels to choose that I quit choosing the networks NBC, CBS and ABC years ago. Last year I decided to give Hawaii 5-0 a try since it was an appealing and interesting program in the 70’s. I enjoy it. I started paying attention and noticed Tom Selleck would be in “Blue Bloods.” I have always enjoyed his acting and the shows and movies he has been in. Then this past summer I perked up when I saw a retro type program that would start in the fall, “Vegas.” It also falls in the “western” category and a cop type show. I began to have faith in the in NBC again and I looked forward to Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights to watch one show each night. NBC in my opinion was back in the quality range in my house on my TVs. Now I see Vegas is being cancelled??? Who are you trying to appeal to? All age groups I thought. Why cancel a quality program? The acting is superb, the setting is very unique, not like any other show on prime time television. The actors are seasoned and still very marketable. There are plenty of programs to appeal to all types of folks out there. What’s the problem??????? I want to know who you are asking when you need to know if a show is a good one and will be continued on NBC? NO one has ever called my phone is 50 years to see if our household likes or dislikes a program. There is so much lousy programming on TV. I am truly disappointed…….

  • Angeline

Sorry, that should have been CBS, but i guess it doesn’t matter because CBS will lose its appeal for me soonas ABC and NBC have.. I do not doubt they will cancel the other programs I enjoy because they are QUALITY programs!

  • Carrie

@Francis William: “Please cancel “elementary”. It’s insulting to Sherlock Holmes.”

Let me guess. You’re a die-hard Sherlock BBC fan. Either that or you’re just one of those annoying ‘purists’.

  • Mark

The only hope for Vegas is if CBS moves it to their summer line up. When was the last time CBS actually had a show survive in that Tuesday Night 10pm slot? I know the Good Wifes numbers were not that good back in 2010 last year Unforgettable did badly

  • steve

Vegas is an excellent show. Unlike anything else on tv. But if CBS is going to axe this 1960’s style show, they might as well cencel Beverly Hills Cop too. Afterall this is based on an old 1984 movie.

  • Ramona Anderson

I liked Vegas. How can a show just be stopped with no conclusion? I tried to watch Golden Boy tonight, but found I could not understand some of the actors’ spoken word. I vote for Vegas to continue.

  • Winifred Bohall

My husband and I would both like to see Vegas continued.
