If you've got the sense that there's not much new I can think of to talk about with Fox show futures this week, you'd be right.

After two successive weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Touch, it is stone cold dead. Treat its Fan Excuse Bingo players with pity. Or derision. At your personal discretion.

The Mindy Project ratings still have it positioned as likely to be renewed.

Where the heck is The Goodwin Games anyway? Other than an episode order reduction from 13 to 7 by Fox already, there's been no more news about it.

The Cancellation Bear will twiddle his thumbs (such as his paws have) and wait.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

So is FOX just gonna have a failed Sept-Jan drama Mondays at 9 before The Following replaces it again?

  • Sky

@ David: if Fox picks up 2 new dramas for next season, I would imagine they’d air one after Bones and one on Tuesday. If one of them fails, The Following would presumably take its spot mid-season. If they both succeed, then I think that’s a “problem” Fox would like to have, especially after this season.

  • SJ

I think Fridays are going to be tough for Fox to figure out. I don’t see Kitchen Nightmares returning and Hell’s Kitchen will probably be held back for mid-season if they need it like this year. MasterChef and Hotel Hell, I presume, will remain summer-only shows.

So does Fox go with Glee + New Unscripted on Fridays and a two-hour comedy block on Tuesdays (Hope/New Comedy/New Girl/Mindy) or do they move Glee/Hope/Mindy to Fridays and launch a new drama and comedy before and after New Girl?

My guess is the former. With them already having to launch new dramas on Monday at 9 and Thursday at 9, it’s much easier to just premiere one new comedy on Tuesdays and have Hell’s Kitchen ready to step in by January.

Here’s what I envision Fox doing:

    Monday:

    8 – Bones
    9 – New Drama / mid-season: The Following

    Tuesday:

    8 – Raising Hope + New Comedy / mid-season: Hell’s Kitchen
9 – New Girl + The Mindy Project

    Wednesday:

    8-10 – The X Factor / mid-season: American Idol

    Thursday:

8 – The X Factor Results Show / mid-season: American Idol Results Show
    9 – New Drama

    Friday:

    8 – Glee
    9 – New Unscripted / mid-season: Raising Hope + comedy repeats

    Sunday:

Animation (with American Dad going on hiatus at some point so that they can premiere Murder Police)

  • JacobYates

I know the Following can’t get a full season order this season as it is in Kevin Bacon’s contract, but can it get a full season order next season or not?

  • Dan

@JacobYates – Possibly if they can renegotiate it. Otherwise I see it as a 24 type midseason returnee type series should the show be successful next season. I would work better to replace a failed drama as well.

As for Glee, a lot of people say it might end up on Fridays so FOX can launch new dramas Thursdays at 9 and Mondays at 9. I would always say probably not but viewers have slumped and the show has gotten old, I can see next season being the last for Glee. Maybe Fridays at 8 would be the slot for Glee.

  • Dan S

Why is everyone so darned anxious to ship Raising Hope to Fridays ? The show would die there & should be left alone on Tues where it’s holding its own. Fridays is a lost cause & best to go with reality shows & maybe move Cops over from Saturday.

  • omabin

    @SJ,

Your schedule is similar to mine, but I still say that 4 hours of comedies together for FOX right now is too much because they are not strong enough for that. I would rather if they tried a strong show compatible with the comedies on tuesdays and the second hour on thursdays after the talents show. Delirium would likely be good enough to be launched on its own tuesdays at 8 leading into new girl and a new comedy (or mindy, that is debatable). If anything, the following and alactraz have proven that fox can still launch a drama pretty much on its own if it is good enough (i love bones, but we can hardly attribute it the success of the following, although its steadiness certainly helps to give a solid pool of viewers). So I think it would be possible. Thursdays could then be used to develop new comedies, and I would give Raising Hope the friday burnoff treatment right away.

  • Dan

@Dan S – Most people think RH should be moved for a few reasons

    1) The Til Death effect, since FOX is giving Raising Hope a fourth season to esentially give the series syndication opportunities, one would think RH and another comedy will air Fridays.

    2) It frees up a slot on Tuesdays for a drama. In viewers minds, With New Girl and a comedy or Mindy Project airing on 9pm Tuesdays, moving RH and maybe Mindy to Fridays at 8 would let FOX air a drama in the slot.

Basically viewers dont want to see a new drama airing on Fridays where it will die but rather Tuesdays. I doubt FOX will drop the Tuesday block. It just needs more stability. Ben & Kate was really the only show that didn’t work in the slot and rather then continuing this season and replacing it with Goodwin Games, FOX just doubled up on RH so they can air Hell’s Kitchen on Tuesdays and get higher ratings.

@Omabin – I think FOX will try to keep their 2 hour comedy block. I doubt NBC or ABC will air comedies at 9:00 again (DWTS will probably air and NBC may launch a new drama after The Voice) Its likely Raising Hope will stay at 8, Mindy Project will air at 8:30, New Girl will air at 9 and a new comedy will air at 9:30. I think they will try a new drama Fridays.

  • Ellen

I think that Mindy will be saved, partly because of its ratings, partly as a face saving maneuver — renewing The Mindy Project and The Following can help avert some of the year’s earlier disasters.

A Glee/New Girl/Mindy block next season could probably help both NG and Mindy.

  • Ben

    @Dan
I agree with you totally about The Goodwin Games summer burn off and the reason it didn’t air during the main season. Though, i don’t know why FOX wouldn’t have faith in The Goodwin Games. After all, it is created by the HIMYM creators, the people who have one of the top 5 sitcoms currently on TV while in its 8th season. Anyhow, i was looking forward to Goodwin Games, but now the show seems doomed.

  • andri

Why oh why sussansh isn’t the Cleveland Show dead.the Mindy project no logical contender.fox nerds an overhaul ridding itself of bones and new girl simultaneously. Entrrtainng at the level of 21st century American audiences

  • tomko44

Sorry, but The Following must go! The stupidity of the characters get more aggravating each episode. During Monday’s episode I was screaming at the TV and almost shut the crap off.

Touch has taken a turn for the worst IMO with the addition of the assassin character. And where is the world-wide connections which made the show interesting fun? It is darker and becoming harder to watch. No wonder it is dying!

  • Dakota

Touch is a great show that I’m afraid Fox has completely lost faith in. Between shelving it until late in the year and the blatant lack of promotion before the premiere and now during it’s second season, the writing’s on the wall. It’s sad to see a good show not getting any love.

  • Ultima

    @David
So is FOX just gonna have a failed Sept-Jan drama Mondays at 9 before The Following replaces it again?

If the fall Monday drama hits, then they probably just move Bones in January.

  • NJ Viewer

Actually, I like the conspiracy angle in Touch better than the connection stuff they had last year.
Seems to me, Fox’s programming has sucked ever since they canceled the X-Files and Firefly.

  • Dan

@Ben – Sometimes Fox just gives up on shows. The second season of The Loop never made it o the air until the summer, and other shows got friday burnoffs (The Return of Jezebel James). They order a show and then they realize that they have no room so they cut the order (ABC did that with Family Tools), then they realize with their schedule failing they may as well not put it on. Then the show gets a summer burn off and is forgotten about.

Actually every network did that this season. ABC did it with Family tools premiering May 1, CBS did that with Friend Me which has no premiere date and NBC did it with Save Me which has no premiere date and they cancelled Next Caller. The Goodwin Games will probably premiere this summer sandwiched between repeats of New Girl, Raising Hope and Mindy Project or FOX could double up on Goodwin Games 7:00 and 7:30 in June. The point is with the schedule the way it is, dont expect to see this on it before summer.

In terms of Touch, the show is definitely dead, Kiefer Sutherland has been offered a pilot on NBC and apparently he’s ready to leave low rated Touch behind. http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/02/kiefer-sutherlands-pilot-offer-is-more-bad-news-for-touch.html

  • Meliwa

Gratned you don’t predict reality shows often, but considering Fox is airing Hell’s Kitchen starting in March, does that mean there will be a spring and summer edition this year? If so does that affect which show(s) the Bear snacks on?

  • Meliwa

    *Granted*
