Red Widow's woeful premiere ratings, which equalled those of Zero Hour, put it directly inside the jaws of the Cancellation Bear. It's certain to be canceled.

Will it air all 13 episodes ordered? The cancellation bear doesn't try and guess. Enjoy it while you can. Along with Fox's Mob Doctor, that's two mob dinners for the bear in one season!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

So in addition to Revenge, Scandal, Castle and Nashville, next season ABC’s schedule could be filled with shows entitled Venice, Gothica, Doubt and Betrayal (pretty sure the latter two were actual Revenge episode titles). What’s with all the one-word titles, ABC? How to Live With Your Parents For the Rest of Your Life ate your dictionary? :P

  • Randy

I like Last Man Standing, but I don’t think it’s going to make it. It sort of seems like they are just trying to run it off the schedule with airing them all in March. Usually the season goes to May, so I think it’s done which is really sad to see, but what are you going to do?

  • Randy

I might lose 7 shows in one year – CSI:NY, Last Man Standing, Animal Practice, 1600 Penn, Touch, 666 Park Avenue, and 90210. That really stinks! Geesh!

  • Randy

@Jonay “Why is ABC’s Sunday dramas failing all of the sudden?”

It’s called season 2 blues. Both Revenge & Once Upon a Time are in their 2nd seasons, and to me both the plots are NOT as good as they were in their 1st season. As for 666 Park Avenue, to me that show is more of a guys type of show being a more horror type of show, but yet it was on a chick filled night. In general though, horror does NOT seem to make it very far on tv especially regular tv to millions. So many horror shows have failed on tv.

I really shocked how Suburgatory, and the Neighbors have made it through. Suburgatory has a hot red head girl, but that show has some of the goofiest / quirkiest stuff going on it. It’s so out there.

  • Hugh

With a third on the way via Vegas :(

  • jupiter5769

i think body of proof will get renewed dwts will bost them up

  • SJ

    @Randy

LMS and Malibu Country both have 18 episodes. Had ABC run them all the way through May sweeps, there’d have been more repeats than originals between now and then.

  • JJF

I really don’t understand why anybody would expect Castle to get a shortened season and not Nashville? Nashville will be the renewal of convenience so ABC can say they didn’t throw their entire drama slate out. It probably won’t make it past that. It’s this season’s pity renewal. Castle’s usually stronger and a much better syndication maker. If anyone is getting a shortened season, it’ll be Nashville.

Happy Endings is dead. It cannot cheat death with it’s woeful ratings.

BoP needs to rise if it’s to be renewed. I don’t think it’ll be spared twice.

Honestly, I think ABC will want to premiere about the same number of new shows as they did last year. Since PP is ending, BoP will likely go too. That’ll leave Nashville to fill that slot. The Neighbors will probably get a renewal too with all the other new comedies getting yanked. LMS will get a third season. This will still put ABC at needing to fill 1 extra hour than they did last season due to the Tuesday comedy failure.

So no, there’s no need to give Castle a shortened season. It’s one of the top drama performers that isn’t made by SR. ABC needs to milk it for all it can now until they get a real hit. And judging by how cold I feel by all of their pilot ideas, I’m not confident that next season will be their year either.

  • Doug

How much did trump pay you for that headline? Doubt Red Widow would be cancelled after
    1 episode.

  • Just Desserts

    @SJ

Happy Endings is shown instead of LMS and Malibu Country on Fridays after those two’s season ends. Which pretty much means renewal for both of them.

  • Ultima

The renew/cancel index predicts what will happen by the time the networks have their upfronts in May.

Maybe next time you should read more than just the headline before commenting.

    ABC- Fall 2013:

    SUNDAY

    AFHV
    OUAT
    NEW SHOW (SHIELD)
    NASHVILLE – 10:00

I hope fans follow NASHVILLE here and perhaps find some new ones. This drama has real potential to become a hit.

    MONDAY

    DWTS
    NEW SHOW – 10:00

ABC needs to try and establish a new drama at 10:00. Castle has been here long enough.

    TUESDAY

    DWTS
    CASTLE
    NEW SHOW – 10:00

Time for the rather stable Castle to help a new 10:00 drama.

    WEDNESDAY

    MIDDLE
    NEW SHOW
    MODERN FAMILY
    NEW SHOW
    REVENGE-10:00

Bring back Subugatory or How To Live With Your Parents (if it is a hit this spring) if New shows don’t succeed.

    THURSDAY

    GREY’S ANATOMY
    SCANDAL
    NEW SHOW 10:00

This way the strong SCANDAL can help a new show.

    FRIDAY

    SHARK TANK
    PRIME TIME/TASTE
    20/20

By canceling expensive sitcoms, ABC can make more profit and declare FRIDAY a complete unscripted night.

  • Ted Craig

These fantasy schedules with SHIELD at 9 on Sundays are highly unlikely. That show does not go up against SNF and TWD.

The best option for SHIELD is to start on Mondays in January, but that seems unlikely, too.

  • Fred

    @Ted Craig

I realize SUN 9:00 is probably the most competitive time slot on tv. However, I think the SHIELD could be strong enough to take it on.
ABC needs to be bold here and take back the slot.
Even Desperate Housewives at its weakes was scoring higher ratings than Revenge this season. ABC needs to take a risk and try something new.

Really? That many people think SHIELD is going to air at 9 on Sundays? With two massively popular shows that already attract the show’s target audience?

  • Greg

    @SJ

Scandal was also a Revenge episode title. Haha
