Red Widow's woeful premiere ratings, which equalled those of Zero Hour, put it directly inside the jaws of the cancellation bear. It's certain to be canceled.

Will it air all 13 episodes ordered? The cancellation bear doesn't try and guess. Enjoy it while you can. Along with Fox's Mob Doctor, that's two mob dinners for the bear in one season!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Red Widow has LUKE GOSS starring in it. Come on ladies!!! If you don’t know who that is, look him up… You obviously have access to the internet.
    It’s a really good show!

Someone, somewhere on the comments said Red Widow was a dumb name for it…fyi, Red Widow is a rare venomous spider, and the main character is a recent widow forced into learning the family business (crime/mob)… Makes perfect since.

The Middle starts syndication this fall on ABC Family.

I agree that putting Shield on Sundays against the two highest rated shows and most male skewing shows (no data, but I am guessing) on television is really a bad idea, any schedule that has that is a big no for me. I can’t especially understand it given the fact that ABC has a wide open tuesday nights that beg for rebuilding waiting for it.

    ABC Dream Schedule:

    Sunday (Fall and Spring/Winter)
Once Upon a Time / Winter Wipeout
    DWTS/ Celebrity Wife Swap
    DWTS / The Taste

    Monday (Fall and Spring/ Winter)
    DWTS Results

    Shark Tank

    The Middle
    Suburgatory or New Comedy
    Modern Family
    New Comedy
Nashville [13 eps a la Scandal to see if it grows… if not, replace it at midseason]

    Grey’s Anatomy
    New Female Skewing Drama

    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country
Suburgatory or How to Live with Your Parents
    The Neighbours

  • Ultima

Does anybody know when The Middle and Modern Family start syndication?

The Middle also starts in the fall on ABC Family and local broadcast stations.

  • Dylan

I think Body of Proof has a chance, along with Happy Endings, in order to accuire enough episodes to air it for syndication.

  • Fred

If the new cycle of DWTS flops this spring, we will all be adjusting our Fall 2013 schedueles. ABC as weil, I hope.

  • Nick

    @NBC Fan

While it’s true that The Middle starts in Fall 2013 on ABC Family, it also starts in Spring 2014 on Hallmark Channel.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Dylan: “I think Body of Proof has a chance, along with Happy Endings, in order to accuire enough episodes to air it for syndication.”

It has no chance. The ratings this season cannot justify another two seasons to get enough episodes to reach syndication. And even after two more seasons, it will STILL be short a couple episodes to reach 88.

You have to realize that despite being in season three, BoP will have only aired 42 episodes by the end of this season. It needs 46 more to reach 88.

There’s zero chance of that happening. It’s a mystery why it was renewed for this season. Syndication does even not explain it.

  • James

    BOP is a goner IMO.
HE may still have a chance, though.

The problem is definitely that more people watch crappy shows just to pass the time instead of taking the time to watch quality shows. Sucks for people who enjoy good acting. :-(

  • BoB

Going to be interesting this week when Red Widow ticks up and the bear feels its sting.

  • Tim

LMS and MC will probably be renewed…I get the feeling ABC wants their Friday comedy block alive. Red Widow, BOP, and HE will be cancelled.

  • Cheryl

To the person that says they need to get rid of Gunnar is crazy. Gunnar and Scarlett are great together, they rank right up there with Rayna and Deacon. Love Nashville and would be devastated if they go off the air. They’ve already ruined their station by getting rid of Private Practice…they can’t do it again.

  • Fred

You are playing it too safe. ABC will never get out of 4th place with the line up you suggested.

First off, the most anticipated new show on ABC is SHIELD. Where do you want to place it? It needs to prominently displayed on the chart. Your 2 available slots, after Grey’s at 9:00 or Tues at 10:00 are not ideal spots. I think it will do well anywhere but can take off big on SUNDAY (despite competitioon)or earlier Tuesday and take on CBS’s NCIS or the NCIS LA.
This is the rare show that may become huge, ABC should be bold with this one.

Although I’m a huge fan of OUAT and would love to watch another hour of a similar show (the proposed Alice in Wonderland spinoff), I don’t think it will happen yet or ever. OUAT is losing viewers at a rapid pace. Not the best time for another version. But I would watch anything those showrunners put on. Even a below par episode of OUAT is still entertaining for me. Unlike many other shows.

Time for the proven Castle to be promoted to an earlier slot and help a new 10:00 show. Possibly on Tuesday. I have a feeling DWTS will return with dismal numbers this spring and ABC wont bring it back for the fall. Leaving lots of slots open. I predict it will become a summer show again like many years ago. This strategy will help ABC gain strength on Monday and Tuesday.

ABC should air a new sitcom after Middle. Save Neighbors and /or Suburgatory and/or Last Man Standing for midseason just in case one or more of the new sitcoms flops.LMS might perform well after Middle.

I much rather see ABC go unscripted on Fridays. Shark Tank is most likely the most profitable show on ABC right now (along with AFHV) Ultra cheap programs with good ratings. Thats what Fridays should be all about.

  • Fred

    updated Fall 2013:

NASHVILLE-I really want this show to prosper. Has so much potential.

NEW SHOW-10:00- Time for CASTLE to be promoted.

Unscriped- SHARK TANK/SPLASH/WIFE SWAP/- whatever provides highest ratings.
CASTLE- Allows CASTLE’S loyal fan base to help a new later drama.
    NEW SHOW- 10:00

GREY’S- Better than wasting $$ on expensive low rated dramas.
    NEW SHOW-10:00

20/20-Caps off a solid lineup of profitable unscripted programs

I really don’t understand Nielsen Ratings for today’s tv generation. Yes, they will tell you who’s watching things live, but people are dvring these shows, and a lot of the times I’m watching shows On-Demand through Comcast plus you have the Internet On-Demand. It truly is mis-leading to find out that their are ratings of a show a few days after it airs. I have been watching Once Upon a Time / Revenge sometimes 2 weeks after they air. I don’t understand why that doesn’t count because On-Demand or through the internet, they are still getting paid for those commercials. A lot of the On-Demand shows even have all the commercials that were on when the show originally aired. So, it’s still 1 hr show with commercials, and you can’t fast forward through them. For instance, I just watched Grimm like that.

I think it’s kind of goofy that only after 1 episode of a show that a show will be cancelled. Probably the reason why Red Widow will fail though is because of the timing. Why end of Feb / March? It’s so dumb to just randomly put a show at this time. People have the things they are watching already, and than here comes another show on the air. No one is prepared to watch a new show all of a sudden. You only put inexpensive stupid shows like Splash on the air during this time and NOT a show that you might think will do good. They should have had Red Widow start beginning of January!

  • Randy

I think Nashville should be on Sunday after Revenge. It seems like the right chicky type of show to follow Revenge. I also think ONE night at least needs to be more of a guys type of night. ABC has a lot of woman shows on. They are alienating 1/2 of the population.

  • LM

The OUAT producers said the spinoff was just an idea they were working on and it is not something that they would do this fall. They even said it may be more of a miniseries.

  • Ultima

Yes, they will tell you who’s watching things live, but people are dvring these shows, and a lot of the times I’m watching shows On-Demand

Nielsen tracks DVR viewing (and have done so for nearly a decade) as well as On Demand viewing. In fact, Live+7 DVR viewing is the standard which Nielsen uses for the season averages of shows and networks.

    you have the Internet On-Demand

Which is tracked by the networks. It’s very easy for the networks to determine ad-supported online viewership, so there’s no need for them to pay Nielsen to do it for them.

I have been watching Once Upon a Time / Revenge sometimes 2 weeks after they air. I don’t understand why that doesn’t count

Because the advertisers aren’t interested in paying for that. They are willing to pay for viewers in the adults 18-49 demographic, or a subset thereof, watching their commercials within three days of the initial airing.

Why end of Feb / March? It’s so dumb to just randomly put a show at this time.

It’s not random at all if you look at Sundays in January/February. They are filled with big events, most notably of which for ABC are the Super Bowl, the Grammys and the Oscars, which limit their ability to premiere a new Sunday show until the first week of March.
