The premiere ratings for CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy arrived at about the same time a malware attack hit our site. Because of that, the Cancellation Bear was a bit distracted and failed to appropriately note the grimness of the premiere ratings. The malware is now gone (fingers crossed!), and the undistracted bear is able to see that Golden Boy is likely to be canceled.
For those who missed last week's CBS post because of the site problems (with a bit of updating):
Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 474th time.
- CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
- Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and Golden Boy (likely).
- You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another drama.
- You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another drama.
- You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.
Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m really not surprised at all that “Golden Boy” is likely to be canceled, it’s a serious stinker of a show! The ONLY reason I watched the first two episodes is the simple fact that it followed two shows I already watched. I noticed last night they announced they were moving it to a new night already…so buh, bye. It’s never a good sign when the network starts jacking with night/time-slots this early on. Honestly though, there’s nothing that could help this show…it’s just horrible.
Cbs is the best channel but even this year i think its been of a down year for them.
GOLDEN BOY! Been there, done that-put a fork in it, its DUN!

I like Nick’s idea of a Friday night comedy hour but the problem with Nick’s schedule is he has 3 new comedies and moves Two And A Half Men back to Monday night, and has 3 new dramas to promote as well as moving Hawaii Five-O to a new night and moving The Mentalist up an hour and NCIS: LA back an hour. Way too much to promote effectively. Also, I’m not sure an all NCIS Night would work, might be too much. In the schedule I posted I put the new NCIS Spin-off NCIS: RED Fridays at 8 to be aggressive on that night and putting Beverly Hills Cop Tuesdays’ at 10 PM after NCIS: LA, keeping Hawaii Five-O where it is. Also, The Big Bang Theory and Two And A Half Men work well on Thursdays and I’d leave Elementary where it is cause it‘s way to soon to either move it or take it off the schedule, and it‘d be better to keep up the momentum. However, I would move up The Mentalist up an hour, moving The Good Wife to Midseason, and at Sundays at 10 PM putting the new series Backstrom, based on the book series with a built in audience and though it might be a good fit with The Mentalist.
@ Joe
No way NCIS: LA only gets a midseason slot, it will get a full 22-24 episode season for sure it may move night as 3 NCIS on the same might drain but its getting a fall slot no question, same with Elementary, its CBS only mild hit of the season and will return for a complete run as well.
No good will come of Elementary having a short season in only its 2nd year
It would be funny if they would renew low rated shows like Vegas and Golden Boy and cancel high rated shows like NCIS LA just to spite this site.
I hope Elementary stays at Thursdays at 10pm. Perfect slot for it, shame that show has so many haters on this site. They’re still mad it got the super bowl slot. Sorry, putting the Big Bang Theory on after the super bowl doesn’t make any sense. Go ahead and flame me ya haters!
Who in the world thinks NCIS: LA is going to get a midseason slot? Isn’t it one of of the top 10 shows overall? Why would CBS hold a top 10 show for midseason?
I don’t see CBS making a comedy hour on Fridays, or moving any of the comedies off their existing days or timeslots. I do think Joe’s Friday night schedule is spot on with the cancellation of CSI: NY. However, I would flip Hostages at 9 for Criminal Minds, especially in light of current media outlets wanting to blame shows like CM for all the terrible things that happen in the world. CM is a dark, violent show and will probably get the 10 PM slot it deserves.
Meliwa
If they go with 3 Ncis shows your not going to see them in the fall one will have to be mid season.
Lee
I can’t see 3 Ncis on one not or even all in the fall one maybe 2 will be mid season.

Can you tell me what you think of my Schedule ?
@Lee
Because there is yet another NCIS I could see CBS holding LA back as 3 NCIS’ is to much in a 3 day period…further, I could see NCIS:LA taking The Good Wife slot on Sundays or Survivor’s slot on Wednesdays
Elementary isn’t setting the world on fire, it’s a weak show IMO and doesn’t really fit anywhere less maybe Sundays or Fridays
@Fan
Only 3 new shows? CBS ordered more pilots this season (especially comedies) I doubt they will keep things “as is”, further the moves don’t make sense….TGW should be in the fall vs football as it skews female. CSI:NY will most likely be canceled. 3 NCIS’ on two days in a row….hello overkill.
My Schedule for next Season (I know it’s not realistic but it could work !)

8:00 – How I Met Your Mother
8:30 – Rules of Engagement
9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
9:30 – Mom

@DeanW
In the past I’ve noticed CBS only moves shows to dominate/strengthen other nights like when Survivor moved to Weds and BBT to Thurs…more recently 2.5 Men to Thurs and CSI to Weds,….some moves work and some are so-so like TGW to Sundays (although 60/TAR/TGW are a very high income demo block)…the moves you suggest change a lot and don’t enhance the various nights a whole lot…JMO
Thursdays
8:00-The Big Bang Theory
8:30-Two and a Half Men
9:00-Person of Interest
10:00-Elementary
No need to fix what isn’t broke. Sure Elementary could be doing higher, but it’s not that bad at all, and CBS has MUCH BIGGER problems. Besides, none of their other 10pm shows are doing that much better anyways. CSI has already gone below a 2 and has been in the low 2′s for a while.
Almost every show you have on I love.I do love CSI NY. It does need some more solid story lines. Some of the Forsenic stuff gets a little silly.
I agree with Elijah! Please don’t cancel Vegas! I love it and everyone I talk to does. I don’t understand the ratings but I don’t think the whole picture is being seen yet!
It would be idiotic to keep Elementary on Thursdays because it’s the only show on that night that gets consistently clobbered in its timeslot. The SB slot was its chance to rise up and recover but it failed. CBS would be utterly stupid to keep it on their best night, Thursday, rather than launch a new show there because it’s not going to ever go up, especially opposite Scandal. If it remains it’s just going to continue to prevent CBS from crowing that they win the entire night in the demo and continue to give ABC a win. Move it to Fridays or something and if it gets a 2.0 there that would actually be doing well, but it’s just going to remain an underachiever on Thursdays.
Either CBS should go for an all comedy Thursday night lineup capped with a drama, ala NBC’s Must See Thursday heyday, or put Beverly Hills Cop on after POI. BHC is by far CBS’ highest profile series for next year and that franchise appeals heavily to males. As proven with POI vs. Grey’s, the only real chance for CBS to beat Scandal and its massive female viewership is to counter-program with a show that will attract the male viewers who don’t have any other options for Thursdays at 10 pm.
