The premiere ratings for CBS' freshman drama Golden Boy arrived at about the same time a malware attack hit our site. Because of that, the cancellation bear was a bit distracted and failed to appropriately note the grimness of the premiere ratings. The malware is now gone (fingers crossed!), and the undistracted bear is able to see that Golden Boy is likely to be canceled.

For those who missed last week's CBS post because of the site problems (with a bit of updating):

Let's review the CBS drama situation, again, for the 474th time.

  • CBS has premiered three new dramas each of the last seven Fall's.
  • Assuming CBS keeps the same number of drama hours next Fall, they'll need to cancel three of their Spring dramas to make room (ignore the already dead Made In Jersey, it is irrelevant). Currently, I am predicting those three canceled shows will be Vegas (certainly), CSI:NY (likely), and Golden Boy (likely).
The most common hypotheticals lean towards bad news for more dramas:
  • You think CBS will expand their sitcom time by an hour? Cancel another drama.
  • You think CBS might air Undercover Boss at 8pm Friday next Fall? Cancel another drama.
  • You think CBS will time share their dramas in partial seasons? Increase their drama time on Sunday-Friday? Or air new dramas on Saturday? Check your medication.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Did CBS really air the pilot for Golden Boy a week ago Tuesday and won’t air the second ep until tonight? Really a bad move.

  • Holly

No, the second episode aired on Tuesday. Tonight is the third episode.

  • Craig

The Good Wife deserves one more season. Along with Person of Interest (and 60 Minutes), it’s all that’s worth watching on CBS…

  • JacobYates

You obviously have a condition known as thick headedness. CBS WON’T RENEW VEGAS. That is, unless it experiences a Friday night miracle. CBS also won’t renew it just to spite this site. Hell they probably even AGREE WITH IT. You said that Vegas was steadily growing in the ratings and it was incredibly successful. Give us all ONE example of that. Wait what’s that? You can’t think of one? Oh! I know why! BECAUSE THERE ISN’T AN EXAMPLE.OF THAT AND YOU KNOW IT! I am telling you this as a die hard Vegas fan. You are a die hard AND THEN SOME kind of fan. I love the show and it’s fine that you love it too. But the fact that you can be so utterly blind to the facts this site presents you with just boggles my mind.

Thats too bad. I have really enjoyed Golden Boy so far.

Please cancel “Golden Boy” and bring back Vegas. It kind of reminded me of “Mad Men”. Loved the whole setup with two good mature actors. It made for a great show.
Why they think about canceling it is beyond me.

  • rayMONDo

Keep Vegas, Good Wife, and Mentalist. Get rid of Amazing Race and Survivor. Never have watched and never will.

Come pilot pick ups for series CBS is going to be a bloodbath. Beverly Hill Cops might get lost in the shuffle considering how many big stars are attached to other pilots. I think CBS will expand comedies on Thursday meaning less drama pick ups. I think NCIS red is the safest bet for pick up as CBS always makes the safe choices.

  • JustMe

“I hope some executive at CBS is smart enough to realize how successful Vegas is and understands ratings don’t really show you the whole Picture.”

You may like the show but it’s not been successful. Much Lower ratings than Unforgotten which was a much better show IMO. I like “Vick Mackie” and the mob parts too but the sheriff and brother/son angle is boring. And those side murder cases are unimaginative.

  • Sheri

I really wish they’d put Rules of Engagement out of our misery. It has been a filler only status for several years now, and has few, if any redeeming qualities. Unlike the rest of the CBS comedies that can stand on their own, this one relies on being near another show. Release the actors so they can go on to better things, and David Spade so he can go back to stand up comedy and out of sitcoms.

  • Sheri

Also, I wish they’d keep CSI: NY and get rid of The Good Wife, but I agree that it’s looking unlikely. And unless The Mentalist can get out of its tedious Red John rut, I’m afraid its ratings will continue to drop and that if it doesn’t go this year, then it will definitely be gone next year. While I understand that Red John is one of the main premises of the show, they didn’t handle it as well as they could and they have and they have beaten that story to death. Then beaten it some more. Last night’s show could have moved us at least a step closer to some sort of resolution, but instead it’s taken us back to square one in the search for Red John and that has gotten old enough that I’m about to stop watching it even as a recorded filler for weeks that most shows are repeats.

i like golden boy alot CBS allways cancels a good show for a new show that sucks they r not the only net work to doso golden boy reminds me a little like NYPD BLUE I love the plot very original it sucks that no one is giving it a chance. VEGAS another good show that is getting cancelled why? i love it the plot very original love it just like alcatrze it should have been renewed who ever makes the decision at the networks should b fired for tv show murder

  • Earnest

I have enjoyed CSI New York more than any of the CSI shows mainly because I like the characters better than the other CSI shows. Please do not continue GOLDEN BOY CBS does not need another cop/law & order type show. Why so many of those kind of shows. I find myself turning to other channels to get away from the cop/law & order genre of show. I need some shows that stimulate the mind and make me think. I will not watch GOLDEN BOY!

  • ToXiX

Golden Boy is a terrific show. Last nights episode was the best yet. I really hope it catches a break Scandal like and rises above a 2.0 at least.

  • Gloria Hamilton

I really hope that they renew “Golden Boy”–the series is interesting and I am a big fan of Theo James. I have enjoyed watching it this season. It’s great.
