Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult :oops: 0.46
90210 canceled 0.51
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.78
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.86
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.91
Supernatural renewed 1.41
Arrow renewed 1.54
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.87

With 90210 now officially canceled, and Cult certain to be (now shipped to Friday for a burn off) the  CW show race with the cancellation bear this season could be over, but the bear doesn't think so.

The CW doesn't have to cancel any more shows to premiere 3 new dramas next Fall, because they're airing scheduled repeats now at 9pm Friday which they could fill with original episodes next Fall.

The cancellation bear still thinks that the CW will cancel at least one more spring drama.

It could be for a variety of reasons, here are just a few:

What if the CW starts America's Next Top Model in the Summer (no premiere date has been set), but airs some episodes into the Fall season and fills the timeslot with repeats for the rest of the Fall? Cancel an existing drama.

What if the CW keeps Friday 9pm as a scheduled repeat? Cancel an existing drama.

What if the CW schedules an unscripted hour in season? Cancel an existing drama.

Get the picture?

There's still plenty for fans of The Carrie Diaries, Beauty & The Beast and Hart Of Dixie to worry about.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    And here begins another endless thread of BATB bashing, TSC (and now 90210 as well) whining, and TCD delusion.

    Bring it on! ;)

  • Jeff (Canada)

    Honestly I think the rest of the shows will be safe now. I know that safe = boring = less traffic, but I think that’s what we got on our hands at The CW now.

  • Greg

    I think is not a question if they WANT to premiere new unscripted shows or drag ANTM to the fall, but if they HAVE to. I think they’ll litteraly wait until the finale to decide the fates of The Carrie Diaries and Beauty and the Beast. For now, I’d say the smart decision would be to renew The Carrie Diaries, which has a shot of growing next season given the good reviews and word of mouth it has received. I’m leaning towards a cancellation for Beauty and the Beast, unless it stays at 0.6-0.7. If it stays at a 0.5, they have to cancel it.

    Hart of Dixie is safe.

  • GreatBoy

    The Carrie Diaries is a great show !
    my prediction:

    * Hart Of Dixie
    * The Carrie Diaries
    * Nikita (Final Season)

    * Cult
    * Beauty and the Beast

  • GreatBoy

    The Carrie Diaries is the olny Teen Show!
    Need be renewed :)

  • Just Desserts

    The Carrie Diaries is getting the pity renewal Hart of Dixie got.

    Hart is getting renewed, obviously, it is the only survivor lat year. Not the mention The Lumineers…

  • bk8718

    Honestly, I’d bet Cult rates better on Fridays than it did on Tuesdays. Still not nearly high enough for a renewal but still…

  • forg

    Their pilots in development looks good on paper, if a lot of them turn to be good CW should take the risk and pick many shows.

  • Marcelo

    The CW should cancel The Carrie Diaries and get rid of these rich-teen dramas for all…

    Nikita is safe, I assume they’re renewing Hart of Dixie for syndication too because they have anything left after Nikita and I don’t know about Beauty and the Beast.

    Cult is gone for sure, which is a shame, I actually wanted to see the pilot but after I saw the ratings… lol

  • Ames

    Hopefully HOD is safe. Its numbers are stable on a really competitive night, it is a self-starter, and its fan base is pretty loyal and vocal. HOD is the only one I really care about. Neither TCD or TBATB have really hooked me yet even though I watch both of them

  • Dillan

    TCD will be renewed like HOD was renewed last year. BATB will be axed just like TSC was axed last year.

    Everything apart from Cult and BATB will be renewed, I think.

  • Shepherd

    It’s looking better for BaTB at this point, but I’m still leaning towards:

    TCD – Certain Cancellation.

    BaTB – Likely Cancellation.

    Nikita, HOD – Likely Renewal.

  • sam

    “The CW should cancel The Carrie Diaries and get rid of these rich-teen dramas for all…”

    Carrie Bradshaw isn’t rich at all…….

  • CH2164

    TCD doesn’t deserve to be renewed especially with the ratings recently

  • Joe

    Hart of Dixie didn’t get a pity renewal, it was the strongest of the three freshman shows last year, so it was a logical decision. The Secret Circle and Ringer tanked, it is seriously time to move on.

    As for this season I would say that Hart of Dixie is a definite renewal, and I can see Beauty and the Beast going to Fridays after Nikita next season. Which means that The Carrie Diaries will for sure be canceled.

  • Wright

    All that’s left is to cancel TCD.

  • halloween

    IF CW pilots are good this time, CW should cancel their bubble shows. They canceled some decent bubble shows last time for more terrible Emily Owens and Cult flops. CW has about 2 years to prove themselves, they need to take drastic possible suicidal attempts to survive.

  • Jamie

    I think Beauty and The Beast will be renewed over The Carrie Diaries, simply because it’s a power house overseas earning over $1.5 million per episode.

    8pm The Selection
    9pm Beauty and the Beast

    8pm Hart of Dixie
    9pm Blink

    8pm Arrow
    9pm Supernatural

    8pm The Vampire Diaries
    9pm The Originals

    8pm Nikita
    9pm reruns for fall

    Midseason: The Tomorrow People and The Hundred.

    Canceled from this season: Emily Owens, M.D., Gossip Girl, 90210, The Carrie Diaries and Cult.

  • Charmed

    TCD was actually 0.5 with 1.25 million viewers :D

  • Charmed

    TCD will be huge worldwide! It hasn’t premiered yet in the UK, SATC was huge here, so I think TCD will too, at least for the first season.
