Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) :oops: 0.43
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show :cry: :cry: 0.72
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.09
Glee :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: 1.11
New Girl renewed 1.16
American Dad renewed 1.16
Bones renewed 1.17
The Simpsons renewed 1.29
The Following renewed 1.50
Family Guy renewed 1.50

The cancellation bear has been asked lots of questions about why Glee wasn't among the shows renewed by Fox yesterday (none of which were any surprise). The bear assumes it's due to contractual wrangling, but that's just a guess, the bear doesn't work via "inside information". The bear would be startled if Glee wasn't renewed

Where the heck is The Goodwin Games? In an update last week, it's premiere was announced for May 20. May 20? Yep, it's certain to be canceled already, but that's for next week's headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Glee will be renewed they earn Fox money for there songs aswell and according to itunes they sell very well

  • _JC

    2 months to go and the only show with any real doubts about its fate is the Cleveland Show? Just thinking about how you’re gonna manufacture 6-8 weeks worth of R/C headlines/stories makes me giggle :D

  • tommie

    @Patrick Ausgewahlt
    Bob’s Burgers won’t get cancelled at this point – they have a season and a half of episodes in production left to air and Cleveland Show hardly does a lot better than it. If anything, I’m willing to bet that Bob’s Burgers won’t get cancelled until it gets to syndication numbers.

    And Fox will hardly renew The Cleveland Show to keep MacFarlane happy, especially since MacFarlane has very little to do with it other than in name only.

    The question really isn’t if Glee will be renewed. It will be. I just suspect it will look different next year, because the fact is, this show isn’t making as much money for Fox as it used to, and with the ratings going the way they have, Fox won’t be able to charge as much for commercial spots during Glee as they have been.

    Glee’s other revenue streams aren’t as profitable anymore either. Music sales are way down this year. So next season, I expect the cast will be smaller so as to lower the production costs.

    Why doesn’t FOX renew The Cleavland Show and put it with its failing tuesday line up? it wouldn’t hurt to try…

  • Billy martins

    What Fox needs to do is shuffle there shecdule around having X factor have their two hour establishment on Thursday nite from 8-10pm & one hour elimination show on Friday at 8-9pm following Glee Fridays at 9pm.And have their comedy hour instead of Tuesday they shall move to Wednesday.Here is how they shall start their shecdule for next season starting with Thursday.
    8:00pm Bones
    9:00pm The Follwing
    8pm Boomerrang{New}
    9pm delirium {new}
    8:00pm raising hope {new day&time}
    8:30pm mindy project{new Day&time}
    9:00pm the Goodwin {new}
    9:30pm {new}
    8:00-10:00pm X Factor{New Day }
    8:00-9:00pm X Factor {new Day}
    9:00-10:00pm Glee {New Day}

    Why doesn’t FOX renew The Cleavland Show and put it with its failing tuesday line up? it wouldn’t hurt to try…

    The failing Tuesday lineup they just renewed?

    Also, FOX gave up on animated comedies during the week a long time ago (after they canceled Family Guy I believe) because they weren’t working. Meanwhile, Animation Domination has been very successful.

    Also also, if they renewed The Cleveland Show at this point, it wouldn’t be ready until midseason at the earliest.

  • Glue

    Why is everyone trashing Glee? It’s great this season! :D

  • Ultima

    @Billy Martins

    You should at least swap The Simpsons and Family Guy (or move them to another night) if you’re trying to make a ridiculous schedule.

  • Dan

    @Jonay – That would never happen, animated shows stay on Sunday and live action stay on Tuesdays. Back before FOX had a live action block it was normal to see live action comedies air on Sundays but there has never been a new animated show airing during the week.

    @Ultima – I agree, while TCS’s numbers did spike back up, everything FOX is doing this season points to a cancellation.

    With only 3 non renewed or cancelled shows shows left its obvious Glee will be renewed just as certain as Touch will be cancelled. The Cleveland Show is gone and a fifth season seems like a longshot.

  • Jerry

    I’m not sure what’s wrong with The Goodwin Games that Fox is hiding it. I know they said that they didn’t feel it would “help the Tuesday ratings out”, but you know what – I don’t watch any TV on Tuesday, at all, right now. And I would tune in for Goodwin Games. But hey!

  • Bill Gorman

    “I’m not sure what’s wrong with The Goodwin Games that Fox is hiding it.”

    Given what they’re doing with it, they must think a lot is wrong with it!

  • aron

    @Billy Martins

    Why would Fox put their most expensive show on a friday which is always dead?

    My ideal shcedule would be

    8:pm the simpsons(it been here for 18 seasons its not moving)
    8:30 murder police fall/ spring bob burgers
    9:00 family guy
    9:30 ammerican dad

    8:00 Bones
    9:00 fall new drama/ spring the following

    8:00 New Girl
    8:30 fall Mindy Project/ spring new comedy
    9:00 glee(new comedys during hiatus)

    8-10 fall xfactor/ spring idol

    8:00 Xfactor/Idol results
    9:00 fall, new comedy/ spring New Drama
    9:30 fall new comedy

    8:00 kitchen nightmares
    9:00 repeats, burnoff.

    8:00 Cops
    8:30 Cops
    9:00 burnoff/ repeats
    11:00 MADtv

    My schedule has no strategies in it, its just based off of my feelings now.
    I dont think Glee and american idol share a cross over audience. Since fox dosent have a new 10pm hour it limots the possibilites.

  • Dan

    @Just Desserts – FOX wont hold Goodwin until fall because they have a lot of more current piltos in development while most of Goodwin’s cast has already moved on.

    @Bill – Agreed, the same reason that FOX held the second season of The Loop until summer, they may just not have faith in Goodwin Games. Either that or the unfortunate scheduling. I understand perfectly why Goodwin Games was cut from 13 to 7 as 7 eps would have fit better timesharing with Ben & Kate, however Ben & Kate failed and the whole Tuesday block was low so the move that made sense was to get rid of B&K, double up on Raising Hope to finish it up and make room for Hells Kitchen and air the better performers New Girl and The Mindy Project through May. In this case there is no open slot for Goodwin Games, so it becomes a summer burnoff along with comedy repeats.

    Goodwin Games is certain to be cancelled before it even premieres like NBC’s Friends With Benefits or likely CBS’s Friend Me & ABC’s Family Tools.

  • TomZ

    I don’t understand why nobody would put family guy at 8pm and the simpsons at 8.30 or 9.00?
    I know it has been there for many years but family guy would take more advantage from football than the simpsons.

    New girl should air after “the x factor” or after “American Idol”, and The Mindy project afetr New girl.

  • The End

    I disagree. The Simpsons has that generational appeal and has been around long enough that any Nielsen viewers who like The Simpsons who also like Football would stick around for it.

    Shows been on the air since what, 1989? It makes a better lead in for Family Guy too.

  • ToXiX

  • Ultima

    So you have nothing.

  • TomZ

    @The End
    Well maybe you are right. But Fox have to do something with the animation domination, it’s falling.
    Even the simpsons two years ago it could manage 4.0 with the football, this year “only” a 3.3.
    Family guy since season 8 is falling: Season 8 premiere- 10 million 5.1, season 9 -9.5 million 4.3-4.7 (one hour), season 10- 7.9 million 4.1 and season 11- 6.5 million 3.3 .
    The difference between The simpsons and family guy is that FG is a littele bit more stable.

    The animation domination is still strong but next year it will fall even more. What would happen if Fox decides to split all the shows in different days?

  • TomZ

    little* with stable I mean that during the season is more stable
