Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.43
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.72
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.09
Glee      1.11
New Girl renewed 1.16
American Dad renewed 1.16
Bones renewed 1.17
The Simpsons renewed 1.29
The Following renewed 1.50
Family Guy renewed 1.50

The cancellation bear has been asked lots of questions about why Glee wasn't among the shows renewed by Fox yesterday (none of which were any surprise). The bear assumes it's due to contractual wrangling, but that's just a guess, the bear doesn't work via "inside information". The bear would be startled if Glee wasn't renewed

Where the heck is The Goodwin Games? In an update last week, it's premiere was announced for May 20. May 20? Yep, it's certain to be canceled already, but that's for next week's headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

But Fox have to do something with the animation domination, it’s falling.

Declining and failing are not the same thing. Animation Domination is still very profitable for FOX.

  • Ekras

Glee will be cancelled – should have been last year. It’s expensive, gets poor ratings, and causes too much negative controversy for them to keep it.

  • Dan

@Ultima – Not sure if I cant post links on the site but just google, “Flintstones reboot cancelled” and both deadline and the hollywood reporter have stories why the show is dead. Apparently it has to do with Kevin Reilly not being thrilled with The Flintstones script and that he only likes it but not loves it. So Seth had the option to write the script over or focus on other projects. He chose the latter and its basically on hold but who knows if the show will ever get revisited.

Personally I think its a good idea to put it on hold. Fox has enough animated comedies for sundays and The Flintstones reboot may be a good successor to The Simpsons but not now. FOX should focus on developing new dramas and live action comedies.

  • Dan

@Ekras – Nah, Glee is still profitable, I expect next season to be the last but it still has enough juice left for one final season.

Just for now… But what I really meant is that the animation domination will not rise again all of a sudden up to the numbers that it used to have 2 years ago, if Fox doesn’t do something with the schedule.
And I think that is going to be to late when Fox will see that FG and the simpsons aren’t good like before. And these two shows are the only one (in tha Animation domination) that still do good ratings.
I really love Family guy and The simpsons but next year they are going to touch the 1.5-2.0 zone (The simpsons already did once or twice)

Why is that a problem? Ratings decline. Animation Domination is still well above the scripted average on FOX and still generates plenty of profits for FOX because any moderately successful show (e.g. Bob’s Burgers, The Cleveland Show) is a lock for syndication.

Season-to-date, The Simpsons is down 13% and Family Guy is down 12%. That’s typical and well below what FOX as a whole is seeing this year.

  • TomZ

I’ve never seen it from that point of view XD Well I hope that the simpsons and family guy will stay for another couple of years :D

  • Dan

@TomZ – All animated comedies besides The Cleveland Show are safe for likely the next 2 years. Its way to early to tell about Murder Police but from what I have read, it doesnt seem to fit with the other animated comedies. Its probably just a one and done series like Sit Down Shut Up, Allen Gregory or Napoleon Dynamite.

The poor and lonely “Touch”-smiley! :-(

  • Melanie

That’s the best picture of the Bear ever.

Are they still trying to spin off the NYC part of Glee? Maybe that’s the hold up.

  • john

It’s too bad because the Fox comedy pilots sound good, but there will be a deathmatch to get on air.

Luckily, I like Mindy and Raising Hope.

  • Jamie04

@Dan and @Ekras – Yes, Glee will certainly be renewed for an entire 5th season. Multiple media outlets have said negotiations are happening right now. We’ll hear soon! My hope is for a multiple season renewal!

  • robin

I think we’re all agree , Glee should be on Tuesday night next season! A 22 episodes season please :D Ryan murphy has some GREAT idea for season 5 :)

  • Dan

@John – My guess is FOX picks up 2-3 new comedies, 1 for fall and 2 for spring.

@Jamie04 – I doubt it will be for mulitple seasons, probably just a fifth season with most of the current cast.

  • communityfan!111

Glee will get renewed for a full 22 episode season cuz then they will reach 100 episodes. i doubt that they will go much farther then that. =(

  • taylor

Glee is a mess this season and ratings have confirmed this. It will definitely get a 5th season for syndication purposes but I predict that will be it.
