Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.43
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.72
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.09
Glee      1.11
New Girl renewed 1.16
American Dad renewed 1.16

The Simpsons renewed 1.29
The Following renewed 1.50
Family Guy renewed 1.50

The cancellation bear has been asked lots of questions about why Glee wasn't among the shows renewed by Fox yesterday (none of which were any surprise). The bear assumes it's due to contractual wrangling, but that's just a guess, the bear doesn't work via "inside information". The bear would be startled if Glee wasn't renewed

Where the heck is The Goodwin Games? In an update last week, it's premiere was announced for May 20. May 20? Yep, it's certain to be canceled already, but that's for next week's headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Keep in mind during your scheduling duels that Fox routinely interrupts programming in the fall due to baseball playoff coverage.

  • Nick

Fox has no game shows or even any other realities in development. Put Kitchen Nightmares or a new drama.

  • Bunny

Touch just became boring with dad following the kid all over yelling and chashing him. Watched about two of them at that was enough.

  • Bunny

Bones is my favorite along with The Following.

  • Bunny

    Too much reality shows here.

  • Dan

My main question is will FOX use Fridays to launch new dramas or will they put Glee there to go the way of Fringe and Touch and to also make room for dramas on Thursday at 9 and Monday at 9.

This year for FOX its less about what will be renewed but rather where will the shows land on the schedule.

  • andri

Could I actually hear a cancellation acoming for glee?? Nobody belies.

  • michael

i agree. The Goodwin Games looks so fun. Save it for the fall.

  • Phil

    Cancel Glee, save Touch!

  • Joseph

The Cancellation Bear needs to put “Glee” out of it’s misery.

But first, he’ll probably devour “Smash”………and likely by the end of the week!

  • Rebecca

“Public information announcement: “it’s” means “it is”. The third person possessive “its” does not contain an apostrophe. Please get this right.
    Thank you.”

Yes! I also wish people would use “then” and “than” correctly.

  • Sarah

While I don’t care either way about Glee because I don’t watch it, I can’t see it going past next season with its ratings, especially with it being after Idol.

  • mmogaddict

The Goodwin Guys always sounded like a good idea for a movie, but not for a US style 13+ episode series.

  • MikeyM

Please let Glee out of it’s misery. The writing is getting worse and now they are going to be doing a school shooting episode?

  • Rik

Surprised to see the mindy project got renewed. I expect the ratings to drop after the second week of the second season when people realize that the show really isn’t that good

  • Craig

Because it’s awful? Fox is the worst of the major networks, by far…

  • JacobYates

Where would raising hope have been on the renew cancel index if it pulled these ratings without syndication?

  • Nick

Where would raising hope have been on the renew cancel index if it pulled these ratings without syndication?

I’m not Bill, but I’d assume he’d have it as likely renewal (or possibly bubble) because it has about the same index as Mindy.

  • C’est Qui l’Papa ?

    Glee ratings this season:

    Episode 1 = 3.1 (7.41 million)
    Episode 2 = 2.9 (7.46 million)
    Episode 3 = 2.4 (5.79 million)
    Episode 4 = 2.6 (6.07 million)
    Episode 5 = 2.4 (5.68 million)
    Episode 6 = 2.1 (5.22 million)
    Episode 7 = 1.5 (4.62 million)
    Episode 8 = 2.2 (5.39 million)
    Episode 9 = 2.2 (5.43 million)
    Episode 10 = 2.0 (5.26 million)
    Episode 11 = 2.6 (6.79 million)
    Episode 12 = 2.1 (5.48 million)
    Episode 13 = 2.2 (6.03 million)
    Episode 14 = 1.7 (5.13 million)
    Episode 15 = 2.4 (6.72 million)

Its ratings are not bad for FOX and I think Glee will get 2 more Seasons (One full for next year and a final season of 13-16 episodes in two years).
