The expression "Catch A Falling Knife" comes to mind when trying to figure out which of NBC's ratings diving sitcoms might survive the season (besides Parks & Recreation which will certainly be renewed).

If (and I think they will) renew more sitcoms than just Parks & Rec, they'll be choosing among shows that have all hit a 1.1 rating or less this season. Yikes. My best guess at this point is that one or more of Community, Go On and Whitney will be renewed, but that's as close as I'm getting to grabbing at the falling knives at this point.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

NBC can always bring back Community,Whitney and/or Betty White Off their Rockers mid-season . I’m sure one (if not more) of their new sitocms will fai. But NBC should still try and develop a bunch of new sitcoms for the fall. NBC is very weak with comedy. They are doing OK with dramas (REVOLUIION, CHICAGO FIRE, LAW & ORDER and PARENTHOOD) and obviously good with contest shows (The VOICE, BIGGEST LOSER)

  • Phil

Jeff from Canada has a great proposition. Hope NBC listens.

  • Ultima

    @were123
I believe Steve meant comedies cancellations, for example Partners avaraged over 2s and that would have been a hit on NBC. On fall 2011 How to be a gentleman had a 2.6 avarage on its 2 initial episodes and got canned, that would have also been a hit on NBC

Only if NBC gave those shows an equivalent lead-in. Go On is a hit on NBC as long as it airs after The Voice.

I love Guys with Kids! Hope it gets renewed!!

  • Jen

Oh – and they need to bfing back Best Friends Forever. That show was hilarious!!! NBC needs to do a better job “advertising” shows and not dropping them so fast…they have gotten rid of some good ones and it looks like some more good ones might be going again…like Guys with Kids…

  • FredMertz

Love Grimm. Why can’t there be more man’s man shows without woman who act like men. when I see a hot girl with a gun bigger than she is I just know some soft mom’s boy writer is behind it.

  • colt13

Would Community want to come back? Being that this is season 4, I assume they wrote a graduation episode as a series finale.

I might like 7 comedy nights for myself, but I think NBC should do 2 comedy nights(2 hrs), 2 drama nights and 2 reality nights, with NFL holding sunday.

  • Pada

maybe they can pick up Happy Endings when ABC drops it, and add it to their Thursday block. I think it would be a good fit with Parks and Community.

  • CCV

NBC doesn’t need a new era of comedy, America as a whole needs to reevaluate its own opinion of comedy. Two and a Half Men, really? Essentially the entire CBS lineup needs to die. With Community still worth watching–though it’s not up to its season 2 brilliance–there are maybe three or four worthwhile network comedies. But comedy is quickly making the same jump drama made to cable. The traditional “sitcom” is dying, and actual comedy is on the rise.

I can’t believe NBC was a major network “To PASS” on the Bible on second though, it was expected!

  • Zachary

Chris D’Elia signed on for another pilot. Whitney is essentially cancelled.

Zach Cregger also did, so Guys with Kids is probably in the same boat.

Ken Jeong did too, but he’ll probably just leave Community.

About a Boy is almost guaranteed a pick up, as is I am Victor.

  • John K.

I think NBC is going to stock up on the “hits”. Here is my prediction:

    Smash Cancelled
The New Normal Renewed 13 episodes
    1600 Penn Cancelled
    Guys With Kids Cancelled
    Whitney Renewed 13 episodes
    Go On Renewed 13 episodes
    Deception Cancelled
    Community Renewed 24 episodes
    Parenthood* Renewed 24 episodes
Parks & Recreation Renewed 24 episodes
Law & Order: SVU Renewed 24 episodes
    Chicago Fire Renewed 24 episodes
    Up All Night Cancelled
    Grimm (F) Renewed 26 episodes
    Revolution Renewed 18 episodes

  • DKD

FYI: Community’s C3 rating is ahead of Go On’s C3 rating. Whitney’s is lower than both. The C3’s are the ratings that will really be used for these decisions.

  • a p garcia

I think NBC should fire the person who said “The Bible” should not be on NBC!

  • toons

years ago nbc had low rated sitcoms cheers and family ties… they renewed them… got lucky and landed cosby show which was an instant hit… suddenly the whole line up exploded… so it makes sense to renew good low rated stuff in this situation… if you get a solid comedy hit next year they could all really take off (of course things are different with all the channels and dvr and online etc… but it’s still a good strategy)

  • carbar

    Bob,

I so agree w/ you regarding, “guys with Kids.’ It is very funny!

I also like the New Normal, but more time should be given to NeNe, the little girl, & Ellen Markin’s characters than the 2 male leads. They’re
    a little boring IMO.
