Tim…Are you watching the same Y and R? Lauren and Carmine, the Wheeler story, Nikki’s MS…The writing and execution has been phenomenal.

And yeah, that headline is silly considering Y and R actually had a bigger increase in that demo.

What is the best news though is when you look at LAST year’s ratings, the shows are all up quite a bit. I’m even giving DAYS props as -31,000 isn’t much.

I think you’ll continue to see increases over last year as 2013 is a great soap year!

  • Mike

Nobody is trying to take anything away from GH. Good grief get a grip. Heaven forbid somebody try to take anything away from them.

I am glad GH is up from last year. I am glad all the shows have been doing well over last year, even up to this week Days has been mostly up from last year. But if two shows are up then they both deserve recognition.

For those of you who love GH …. remember that we who love Y&R love it just as much.

I can just imagine the outrage if the headline had been reversed and GH had been ignored.

  • JayTN

Pat…timsdale4ever has been moaning and complaining about Y&R being “boring” for a while now…I’m not sure what soap he has been watching as I don’t recall Y&R really being “action” oriented. It’s always been dialogue heavy, even when Bill Bell was running the show. Although the soap is older than I am, I seem to remember reading that when it launched it was perceived as a “glamorous” soap (kind of like the later primetime soap “Dynasty”, which was considered more “glamorous” or upscale than its CBS counterpart “Dallas”). Perhaps the old adage “some people aren’t happy unless they are complaining” applies here.

Mike…the people who run this site are not stupid (even though I don’t necessarily agree with most of their opinions/analysis). Putting “GH Up…” in the headline will probably get all of the rabid GH fans in a tizzy and get them to clink on the link, which gives the site more traffic and by extension more money. That is probably the *real* reason why the headline was altered from its source material.

  • TimsDale4ever

Yes Pat, I’m watching the same DRAGGY Y&R that you do. I agree — the writing and execution have been phenomenally draggy. lol!

Seriously, I’m more than glad you and Jay love the show. The stories for the most part are Ok. I just think the show could grab hold to so many more viewers if they would just speed it up some, and it would become so much more interesting with alot of the repetitive conversations done away with. Honestly there are times I watch a new episode on SOAPNET and at first I’m like, wait I’ve already seen this episode, and then the next scene appears and then I realize it’s a new one. That’s not a good way to attract new or returning viewers.

  • Rick

    REALLY stupid headline.

Undermines the authority of a site like this.

  • LynTX

All the soaps are ‘maintaining’. B&B continues to add to its audience; GH and DOOL are back at 2011 #s; Y&R is keeping its lead. What concerns me is that with all of the additions to Y&R; angst for long held stable couples, they still only manage less than 25% of the key demo. (Sorry, didn’t think Lauren’s response to a family issue was to bed Carmine phenomenal.) Since this is what makes the networks money and finance our shows, THIS is the # I care about.

  • Pat

Don’t get me wrong, there is always room for improvement. But I’ve watched for years and the last 6 or so strayed so far from the first 33, that the show became unrecognizable. I celebrate the “drag”…keep it going Josh.

Today’s Y and R is trying to refocus. I agree that for a couple of months there it was dialogue heavy, but sweeps month moved a lot of stories and characters forward. Overall the viewers seemed to agree.

The fact that Lauren cheated is such old soap that I find it hard to believe that anyone is actually complaining about infidelity. OF COURSE it was a horrible reaction, but it intrigues me to see Lauren, who was in the longest current continuous marriage on the show, being tempted. And c’mon the guy is hot, and I CAN BET that thousands of viewers, both women and gay men found themselves thinking the same thing that Lauren did. And that makes the story phenomenal, and so very relatable.

  • Harlee

Well Tim….count me on the side of Pat, Mike, & Jay. First this is so misleading “GH up in 18-49 demos”…shame on Sara you playing mind games to get a rise it seems. YES GH is up in the demos but here’s the rest of the ratings

    Women 18-34 Viewers
    1. Y&R 224,000 (+19,000/+16,000)
    2. GH 219,00 (+18,000/+47,000)
    3. B&B 175,000 (-11,000/-23,000)
    4. DAYS 168,000 (-26,000/-15,000)

    Women 18-34 Rating
    1. Y&R 0.7 (+.1/+.1)
    2. GH 0.6 (same/+.1)
    3. DAYS 0.5 (-.1/same)
    3. B&B 0.5 (same/-.1) Y&R up in ALL demo ratings and #1 in all catagories. As for Total viewers all soaps FLUCTUATE in total viewers from week to week but networks rely on demos and Y&R is TOP DOG!

More action Y&R tried that with hack MAB and was bleeding badly in all ratings, demos, and total and it didn’t work. This team might not be Bill Bell but they know how Y&R should be in Bill’s style. A year ago all was in the negative side so in short time all is on positive side. Y&R & GH is only soaps on the positive side and Y&R beat GH’s positive numbers…the proof is in the ratings. GH was #1 in demos just a month ago proclaiming Y&R’s throne and singing the demise of Y&R and now has stagnated while Y&R was quietly growing. Go read some other boards GHers are not happy with the mess going on right now w\vampires, ice princess bs, mind control, Connie|Kate mess eating up screen time 8 days a week. It’s all over the net with their displeasure right now. This team needs to wake because the great turn around they did create is slowly whittling away.

Y&R is not an “action pack, plot driven type soap” but a slow moving, psychological, sexually charge, character driven soap. We fans of this type of soap opera want situations spring from within the character.

Y&R is a thinking man\woman soap and proving why. Some didn’t see this side JFP at ABC but regardless the mistake made years ago, she turned out smart, intelligent story-telling at GL. Jill’s back at CBS and doing what CBS has always done with their soaps more of a reality based soap opera. CBS has someone in charge in Angelica McDaniel that loves the genre and proving way. CBS & ABC is completely different in their approach towards their daypart…it’s not CBS fault that ABC killed their daytime in one big blow, and they are feeling it now!

  • Mike

For the person saying they haven’t heard anything from the talk shows in awhile. CBS is still sending out their raves on The Talk along with press releases about their whole daytime lineup.

ABC hasn’t released press releases on anything for about 3 weeks now. Not even their weekly Katie is the #1 new syndicated talk show. The only things I have seen from ABC is about GMA. ABC has not been promoting anything as far as ratings for daytime lately.

    NBC very rarely does.

So the only thing that we really know right now is that The Talk is having a very good season.

With all the changes being made at The View I am pretty sure that The View is still not doing well.

  • robert

Good to see all the soaps up from last year.

  • Jack

I don’t understand the ratings for women 18-49.
How does GH go up .l for +2,000 and DAYS goes down .1 for -73,000?

  • Jason

love Adrienne Zucker but give Nicole something to do besides feel sorry for herself every show,or talk to herself out loud. Can Eric/Nicole be anymore lame. The dialogue is so funny.Kristen/Brady is getting tired. Is there really any suspense if/when she dumps Brady. These two couples are so boring.DOOL also has way too many flashbacks.

  • Mike

Jack, From the way I understand it a certain number of households and viewers equal a certain point. So depending out where those point values lie it put both shows in a new bracket.

Notice how Y&R gained 9000 viewers but they stayed the same. They didn’t gain enough to move them up to a new bracket.

  • Pat

Mike…how long has you watched my fav soap Y and R? Just curious as it’s been through A LOT the past 6-7 years….

  • Mike

Pat, I have watched since March 26, 1973….from day one. I have loved all the years except not so much since the latter days of Jack Smith’s time when he got way out there for awhile with the latter part of Sheila’s last visit and the arrival of Gloria…..but even those days were more enjoyable than Latham and MAB’s years.

I am actually liking what Phelps and Griffith are doing so far and I was very skeptical.

The years of the Brooks, Prentiss, Fosters, etc. were my favorite years. I loved the Brooks sisters and I loved the old friendship between Kay and Liz and the rivalry that Kay had with Jill in the early days of the show.

The show when it first came on it was a breath of fresh air and very risque. You had women on in daytime not wearing bras under their dresses. No daytime soap had done that. Couples were shown in bed together. Snapper was always talking about sex. It was strange for daytime but especially for CBS which was the most conservative of all the three networks.

I also loved the years when they first introduced Paul and his family as well as Victor. I still don’t like Victor just because he was so mean and disgusting when he first arrived. And then of course Paul was this beach kid when he first came on. And I think I remember that he even gave Nikki some type of VD then too. I just have always loved that all the characters have so many layers. It has definitely always been a character show. And to me that is the way it should be. Latham and MAB really robbed the show of that.

  • Mike

Well Pat I wrote a response for some reason it got moderated out. I’ve watched since day 1. Only missed any episodes just in the recent MAB mess.

  • Kevin A.

Can’t get enough of Y&R! This is Daytime Drama at it’s best. Every episode is filled with so much emotion suspense, and romance. Most compelling story lines on daytime TV!

  • jonboyelk

@Mike Don’t get me started on Lyn Marie Latham, the bitch who destroyed Knots Landing.

  • Pat

    LML has destroyed a lot I guess…

For folks who were fans of the “General Hospital” spinoff “Port Charles” that aired from 1997-2003, the vampire storyline was a treat… Only because it finally tied up “Port Charles” storylines for viewers after almost a decade. When PC was cancelled, the storyline was left as a cliffhanger that resulted from PC being on a 6 month production cycle (as opposed to other daytime dramas that film all year around). PC’s production schedule didn’t mesh with ABC’s planned programming change (I believe this was when “The View” expanded to one hour each day). I could see how viewers who never saw PC (it wasn’t aired on all ABC affiliates) would be annoyed with the vampire story though. I hope that this week, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, that maybe some of the cast and characters from the long-lamented “Ryan’s Hope” will find their way to GH. Lol.
