Update: Joy Behar will discuss her departure on Monday March 11.

via press release:

Her First Television Appearance Since Making the Announcement

Joy Behar discusses her decision to exit ABC’s “The View” (11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, ET) with her pals Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd live MONDAY, MARCH 11. As an original cast member, Ms. Behar has been instrumental in the success of “The View” since its creation in 1997 and will continue to appear for the remainder of the season.

“You can’t stay forever on a show,” Ms. Behar told “Good Morning America” exclusively. “I am graciously exiting stage left. I’ve put in 16 years and felt the time was right. I want to explore other opportunities.”

The View may lose two of its co-hosts.  Joy Behar has announced that she will be leaving the ABC talk show at the end of the season. She has been with the show since its debut sixteen and a half years ago. Us reports that ABC has opted to let Elizabeth Hassleback go because she tested poorly in ABC's market research. A representative for the show neither confirmed nor denied the rumor making the ambiguous statement, "Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract."

Sad that Joy is leaving but SO GLAD Hassleback is too

  • JR

If I was a conservative, I would be glad that Hassleback is finally going to be off the show. They can find someone much more intelligent to represent a conservative point of view. Most of the time it seems like she has no idea what she’s talking about and is just reciting the talking points that were handed to her by the show’s producer. I doubt even Fox News will want her.

  • fed up

I would love to watch the view again but only after Elizabeth the angry disfunctional racist monster is gone.

  • Paul

They need to keep Elisabeth. America loves to hate her and secretly, half of America does LOVE her. Bad move if they get rid of her. I dislike her but they should keep her.

Joy makes sense. She has outgrown the show.

  • Blue Bear

Hey fed up, why do you call Elizabeth a racist?

  • Joie

    Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a rhymes-with-“runt”.

  • Evelyn

So Joy is leaving the View. Thank God for small favors. She runs down the Republicans, all religions including what she states is hers (Catholic). I haven’t watched the show for a long time because of her. Elizabeth is a breath of fresh air and holds her tongue a lot because the other 3 are obviously Democrats and she is usually shouted down any way. I watched her once or twice when she had her HLN show and it was more of the same garbage that she spewed on the View. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out Joy. Adios, aloha, so long it’s not been good to know you.

  • Evelyn

Hey fed up!! How often did you watch the View? The only one who is a racist that I could see was not Elizabeth but Joy with her constant berating of everything from religion to politics and anyone or anything that did not agree with her.

  • Fake Me Out

Words previous commenter’s have used …

    raving lunatic
    Nasty and obnoxious

And they all fit Hassleback perfectly. Perfect example of not judging a book by it’s cover … ok outside but inside she is a dark, twisted, mean spirited, evil little troll. If hell actually existed, her parking spot would already be reserved. ABC will have to give the studio a good airing out to get rid of her stench once she leaves.

You obviously have absolutely no idea what the word racist means.

“Oh I long for the days when Rosie was on and would have those awesome cat fights with Elisabeth. That was The View at its best!”

Rosie would really say what she wanted to. Elisabeth i am convinced usually doesn’t understand what she is trying to say. I haven’t really watched since Rosie left but i still have too many memories of Elisabeth saying something totally stupid or/and grossly mis-quoted and her thinking she was brilliant for it. There are sooooo many comments here insulting the non-conservatives but i doubt most people would be thrilled with Elisabeth’s possible departure if she were truly as intelligent as she thinks herself to be. I didn’t stop viewing because Rosie got fired; i stopped viewing because Elisabeth is an idiot and can’t stop herself from confirming it almost every day. Find someone who actually has her own opinion independent of cue cards and a voice in her ear and can articulate it and i won’t care how conservative she is.

Elisabeth could have a long term contract…. that is about to expire.

  • Nell

The View will probably benefit from new blood,,, Joy Behar is not funny or entertaining at all,,, so glad she will be out of there. Elizabeth is smart but not quick enough to go against the crazy unrelenting liberals in that show. Whoopi and Behar should never appear together again,,, they are too toxic … hard to take.

  • grandcru

How about replacing Elizabeth with ANN COULTER….do you think the other libs could deal with that?

  • Jacob

Anyone who longs for Rosie needs their head removed from their rear end. They should replace that old Joy woman with Bob Beckel, that would be good tv.

  • TV Gord

I love any story about Elisabeth Hasselbeck because it always illustrates so clearly how neither side of the political spectrum can lay claim to the word, “tolerance”. ;-)

  • Mike

That smug arrogant Rosie O’Donnell is the one that made me quit watching The View. I loved her in her talk show but when she started spouting her hatred and vitol on The View I saw the true Rosie O’Donnell. I don’t watch her movies and haven’t watched The View since. The View also made me no fan of Goldberg. The day I heard she walked out like she did showing her true so called tolerance….I threw every movie I had ever bought of hers in the garbage. And haven’t watched one since.

I never liked Elizabeth either. I think someone could represent the viewpoint better. But to fire her for her politics just makes me never to want to watch again.

I love how liberals always say they are the tolerant party but they constantly prove that they preach a good game but they sure never show that tolerance as fruits. Just look at many of the responses in this thread alone. Also look at the examples of Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg on the show alone.

TV will be much better off when The View is cancelled.

  • jessica

Jacob, my head is not in my ass or that of anyone else. The Rosie era was the best of all of The View i have watched, not for the fights but because there was someone on the show who really didn’t give a f*** if people liked or didn’t like her view. That was the point of The View but it always felt constrained and somewhat fake prior to Rosie. Getting rid of Rosie equated to conceding all credibility for the sake of i’m-not-quite-sure-what.

The View used to have a journalist, a comedienne, a lawyer/celebrity reporter, and an actress. The actress was replaced with a second journalist. The second journalist was replaced with a reality show contestant. The first journalist was replaced with a second actress/second comedienne/activist. The lawyer/celebrity reporter was replaced with a third actress. The second actress/second comedienne/activist was replaced with a fourth actress/third comedienne/second activist. The result is that currently 3 of the co-hosts are actresses or/and comediennes and the fourth is still a runner-up in a reality show. … and Debbie Matenopoulos was fired in 1998 for being an actress!

  • AndyG

Why doesn’t ABC make it official and rename the show ‘Left View’? Never watched it…never will.

  • Cj morton

So pretty much it may lose the two members who have the most outspoken views and generally create most of the drama. Losing Elisabeth would be losing a very valuable member, and the one who brings the conservative viewpoint.

  • Rob R

I think the vile opinions of Elizabeth must be based on short tiny video clips instead of watching her every day. She is a very gracious conservative, an advocate of gay marriage years before President Obama ever was, and has always separated politics from personal attacks on the President. She has repeatedly praised Mrs. Obama for her causes and graciousness. She has said many kind and lovely things about President Obama as a person and a father that one would never ever hear echoed on FOX News. I understand disagreeing with her politically; I don’t understand the ignorant hatred of her personally.
