Update: Joy Behar will discuss her departure on Monday March 11.

via press release:

Her First Television Appearance Since Making the Announcement

Joy Behar discusses her decision to exit ABC’s “The View” (11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, ET) with her pals Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd live MONDAY, MARCH 11. As an original cast member, Ms. Behar has been instrumental in the success of “The View” since its creation in 1997 and will continue to appear for the remainder of the season.

“You can’t stay forever on a show,” Ms. Behar told “Good Morning America” exclusively. “I am graciously exiting stage left. I’ve put in 16 years and felt the time was right. I want to explore other opportunities.”

The View may lose two of its co-hosts.  Joy Behar has announced that she will be leaving the ABC talk show at the end of the season. She has been with the show since its debut sixteen and a half years ago. Us reports that ABC has opted to let Elizabeth Hassleback go because she tested poorly in ABC's market research. A representative for the show neither confirmed nor denied the rumor making the ambiguous statement, "Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract."

  • Joseph

Could ABC decide to cancel “The View”, give the 11 A.M.-12 Noon (ET) hour back to local stations, and in turn reclaim the 9-10 A.M. hour so that “Good Morning America” can expand to three hours??

With “GMA” having ended “Today”‘s decade-plus streak as the top-rated network morning show, this may be the time for “GMA” to expand to a third hour.

And it would cost ABC much less to expand “GMA” to three hours than to keep “The View” going.

  • Rob R

Or ABC could purchase AMC and OLTL back from Prospect Park and slot the half hours at 11 and 11:30. Fun to fantasize….

So sorry to hear Joy is leaving. I laugh most days because of her wittiness. Glad they are letting the arrogant, loud mouth Elizabeth go. I usually mute it or change channels when she starts ranting. I look forward to some new faces\. Sherry, Whoopie & Barbara are great, however I think Barbara should slow down at bit, I think she pushes herself too hard.

  • Jack

What joy to hear Joy is leaving, but to another planet, I hope. Elisabeth was the only sane one among the bitches.

  • Matty

I think it is funny that people are mad that The View is liberal but they are perfectly fine that Fox News is all conservatives. lol

  • Mike

Matty, For me I don’t like either. I am advocate for a good news program that gives me the facts and lets me make my own decision about it.

I’m tired of news programs that try to force feed me their opinion and tells me what to think.

I am intelligent enough to make up my own mind. And for that reason since all news programs today attempt to do that….all are blocked on my TV. I haven’t watched anything on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, or the nightly news in over 4 years. I use the Internet and search out articles here and there and make my own informed decisions.

The View sounds like it should be called Leftwing View if they let EH go just because she is conservative. Joy does not come across as a very nice person and can’t stand anyone who will disagree with her. So I can see her leaving to get her own show on CNN. She won’t have to share and her staff can laugh at all her jokes like they did when she was on CNN before.
I will say this I think she would get better ratings than Piers what’s his name who only talks about guns every night at least she might have a few guests on who will talk about other subjects.

  • Cass rowlwland

Do you think abc would bring back amc and oltl

  • Mark3

They hate rhe gorgeous elisabeth cuz she hot and smart and isnt a zombie like the rest of tge leftist women on that show. O my…she has her own opinion! ? How dare she lol

  • Mark3

@matty fox is the ONLY TV STATION to be mostly republican. Libs are on that show.butits ok to have liberal ran abc. Pbs. Cbs. Nbc. Msnbc. And cnn?! And people say the lib media is fair lol. All they do is worship obamas ass mo matter what that retard does. And its crazy that a cable station like fox wins in ratings every week over cnn and msnbc COMBINED! tgere is hope for america after all. (Alan colmes and dick morris huge libs on fox) greata van sustran is registered independent so is o reilly the rarings king. How many non libs work for msnbc?!

  • Jan

Didn’t Joy Behar learn her lesson when she had a serious talk show before and was fired?
Elizabeth was the only fair person on the View…She is moderate and tried to be respectful of other guests…She shows a great deal of class..That is somehting the liberals will never understand..

  • Mike

I don’t see why ABC would bring back AMC and OLTL now esp. when they don’t own them. ABC has always owned the programs they put on in their day part. I think the only way they would ever come back to ABC is if they prove themselves successful on the Internet/Hulu and the deal runs out with Prospect Park. Right now they are making money off the shows and Prospect Park is paying all the production costs to produce them. So ABC is in a win position with the shows.

I don’t think either show will return to TV until after they have proven that they have a built in audience on Hulu.

  • Mark3

@jan amen to that! U hit the nail right in the head

  • TV Gord

Rob R, I enjoyed your comment at the end of page two. Nicely put. I agree completely. Clearly, most of the people commenting (here, and on other websites) are ill-informed and haven’t watched The View on any kind of regular basis.

  • Derrick

Mike, The very definition of tolerance says to be able to endure REASONABLE ideals that differ from your own. Calling all muslims terrorist is not reasonable.

Whoopi walked off that stage because Bill O’Reilly continued to say Muslims attacked America instead of saying Terrorist. He is attacking a religion by trying to say all Muslims are like that, but if we were talking about Christians ( the Michigan, North Carolina and Tennessee militia groups) then your response would not be to call them Christian terrorist, you would just call them nutjobs or plain terrorist.

  • Ritchie

If Elizabeth does leave, I’d appreciate it if they replace her with somebody who speaks with real conviction. I’m a Republican but she always made me consider being a Democrat. She is entertaining at times, I gotta say. Rosie O’Donnell would agree me, lol.

  • Derrick

    1. By your own logic, the liberal view point is split between 6 or 7 networks while all the conservatives watch one network. So of course fox would have better viewership( they have actually be losing in the ratings to MSNBC)

    2. The word independent means you are not registered with a party, it has nothing to do with your political values. both Greata and Bill are conservatives.

Yes Fox has some liberals on their network(Dick Morris is NOT one of them), but it doesnt matter if O’reilly spends the entire show screaming over them.

And if you have to ask about the Amount of conservatives on a network then you obviously do not watch them. Its better to make an argument after you have tried to gather information on it, rather than simply make a claim and hope it is true.

Joe Scarborough, S.E. Cupp, Steve Schmidt, regular contributors like Jon Huntsman, Megan McCain, and Marsha Blackburn are all on MSNBC.

  • wallaby2012

This is a washed up show…..never watched, never will watch.

  • donnie

elizabeth has about as much sense as a head of cabbage and the personality of a dial tone
