Update: Joy Behar will discuss her departure on Monday March 11.

via press release:

Joy Behar ON HER DECISION TO LEAVE “The View” AFTER 16 SEASONS,

LIVE, MONDAY, MARCH 11

Her First Television Appearance Since Making the Announcement

Joy Behar discusses her decision to exit ABC’s “The View” (11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, ET) with her pals Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd live MONDAY, MARCH 11. As an original cast member, Ms. Behar has been instrumental in the success of “The View” since its creation in 1997 and will continue to appear for the remainder of the season.

“You can’t stay forever on a show,” Ms. Behar told “Good Morning America” exclusively. “I am graciously exiting stage left. I’ve put in 16 years and felt the time was right. I want to explore other opportunities.”

The View may lose two of its co-hosts.  Joy Behar has announced that she will be leaving the ABC talk show at the end of the season. She has been with the show since its debut sixteen and a half years ago. Us reports that ABC has opted to let Elizabeth Hassleback go because she tested poorly in ABC's market research. A representative for the show neither confirmed nor denied the rumor making the ambiguous statement, "Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract."

    Sarah Palin is available.
    – Barbara Walters: Sarah, would you like to join our Think Tank, also known as ‘The View’?
    – Sarah Palin: You betcha!

  • Todd

Barbara Walters has never divulged her politics beliefs, because of her profession to be objective. Whoopi and Joy probably have the same… they are more Liberal. Sherri is an Independent, so she swings either way. And Elisabeth is the staunch Conservative. The ladies are very diverse, and that I why I like watching them. I will miss Joy very much, but I think Jeff Zucker (CNN) is going to bring her over there…. he had said that he wanted a more light and comedic evening show for CNN. Elisabeth will be just fine as well. I’m sure Fox News will probably hire her as a Conservative Pundit…. or maybe msnbc. msnbc has Conservative Pundits as well…. as do CNN. I personally am a Rachel Maddow fan. We are all different in our likes and dislikes, so there is something for everyone.

Pull the plug on this show! Sherri “the world is flat” Shepherd is STILL employed?

  • Pla

The beginning of the end of The View.

  • Bob

I am a conservative and can’t stand Elizabeth H. Hope they put someone on better.

  • W.P.

It’s interesting how much speculation is going on around this show. First off, rumors haven’t been confirmed that Elisabeth is being ousted. And secondly, if she is, and if it’s because of audience research, that doesn’t mean her replacement won’t also be a conservative voice. (The EP is conservative, after all.)

It would seem that if Babs retires and Joy and Elisabeth exit, the end may be near. Perhaps Katie could come out of syndication to land that network slot…

    You liberals are too much

  • roger

BARBARA RETIRE, RETIRE, Had enough of you for a long time.

  • debsafan

I wish they would get rid of the whole show. I don’t watch it never have never will.

  • Patty

Elizabeth Hasselback is too good for that miserable excuse of a show!!! I don’t know how she could stand being with those loudmouthed liberal lunatics!! She has great courage!!!

As for Joyless Behar – Good riddance to bad rubbish!!!!

  • Sophie

I loved the show when Rosie was on! They should hire her back. I’m so happy Elizabeth is going, never cared for her! But please don’t hire Brooke Shields. She was on a week ago and didn’t care for her! I’ll REALLY MISS JOY!

  • iggy

Jeez, how hard is it to find a funny, telegenic, sane, conservative woman? ‘Cuz FOX sure can’t find any.

  • Jan

Who watches that show anymore??? Many of their guests refuse to ever go on the show again because they insult them. They all talk at the same time. Regardless of your political views, all 5 of them seem extremely uninformed.

  • Bloop

She was on the show for ten years, and the Conservatives act like she’s getting the shaft? Typical. Rosie was on for a single season, and no one blamed her leaving on her politics.

  • AppleStinx

    @Bloop

Rosie left because ABC wanted her in a 3-year contract and she wanted another 1-year deal. And then she walked out before the end of her contract.

Wow – all the nutcase Red State people flood the site…Call the FEMA people for pumps! :-)

“Us reports that ABC has opted to let Elizabeth Hassleback go because she tested poorly in ABC’s market research.”

Seriously it took them ten years to figure that out. That’s obviously an excuse.

The main loss is her hot legs, other than that who gives a rat’s butt? :-)

I only watch this stupid show when some hot actress is on. Otherwise they could cancel the thing and I couldn’t care less. :-)

I’m a gay dude who likes Elizabeth. It was nice to hear someone conservative who could give their talking points without falling into rhetoric or anger when presenting them (not saying that liberals don’t have rhetoric or anger, just most conservative outlets today follow the FOX News model). Oh, and she’s pro-gay marriage (and was before Obama and is still before the GOP platform). Sounds like a free-thinker to me! Apparently free thinkers are not likable in America today. One must be a party-toting, angry, and polarizing figure. Sad.

  • SG

    Bye Elisabeth, won’t miss ya!

  • Susan

Make no mistake they were both fired. The ratings are off.
Joy is a single-minded mean-spirited, nasty mouthed insulting
comedienne. If you don’t agree with her left-wing politics she
immediately looks like she swallowed five lemons. While she insults
everyone for a laugh the show then will talk about bullying in this
country. They do most of the bullying however…for money.
I haven’t watched this boring show since Meredith left.
