The cancellation bear is going to miss catching Last Man Standing this season. With ratings on Friday averaging > 70% of ABC's overall spring average, it's time to move Last Man Standing to "likely to be renewed" status. There's not a lot of experience with drama renewals on Fridays, but that relative ratings level is well above what other networks have renewed Friday shows before. As for Malibu Country, I think its situation is still uncertain.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

YAY for Castle! It’s nice to see those green toothy smiley faces next to Castle.

I’m thinking everything from Last Man Standing and up will be renewed. And Happy Endings will be moved to TBS to be paired up with Cougar Town. If it can do well on Friday nights that’ll show that it can still get ratings despite being moved, so that’s more incentive to try to get it over to TBS.

    GO LMS!

  • DM

SOO excited Last Man Standing has been upgraded!

  • Michael1

I wonder if Anthony Edwards regrets doing “Zero Hour” instead of “King of the Nerds.” I’ve heard that the latter was renewed. Of course, I’m sure they’d take him if he wanted to be on it.

Possible Fall 2013 ABC Schedule could be…

    DWTS Results
    The Returned

    The Middle
How to live with your Parents (for the rest of your life)
    Modern Family
    Untitled Cullen Brothers Project

    Grey’s Anatomy

    Last Man Standing
    The Neighbors
    Shark Tank

    Once Upon a Time
    Big Thunder

Go LMS! It took me sometime to warm with the recasting but hey I’m ok with it now and the new direction the show took is now better than earlier this season where it was a little too political.

LMS seems certain renewal, but agree that MC is still wait & see

  • t04

    Castle Monday 2013/2014 !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lll

Seeing LMS continue to hold those ratings on a Friday gave me a feeling that it will be renewed. I was waiting for TVBTN to see it to and make it official.

  • Drew

ABC needs to get their top dramas off this insanely, annoying hiatus schedule. Yes, I know there have been some conflicting problems that arise when airing those shows, but the momentum for SCANDAL, REVENGE, GREYS, and even OUAT have decreased dramatically. I can’t believe ABC would do that considering some of those dramas aren’t doing so hot with the ratings…

  • MichaelChickless

    Outdoor Man for the win!

Will they be airing the remaining episodes of Zero Hour?

  • J.G.

It’s quite obvious that LMS and MC are a package deal sort of thing. If LMS gets renewed, so will MC; if MC gets cancelled, so does LMS.

  • Bill Gorman

“It’s quite obvious that LMS and MC are a package deal sort of thing.”

    How’d ya figure that?

  • Dan

I figured this was going to happen soon with Last Man Standing, its done quite well for fridays.

Last Man Standing & Malibu Country are not a package deal. If anything, LMS is in better position to be renewed because its closer to syndication only 2 seasons away. Malibu Country dips from its lead in and then Shark Tank bounces back up.

ABC can very well cancel Malibu Country.

  • Carmen

I think ABC will give Malibu Country a second try. That would be mostly because of Reba who is highly likable.
MC, however, needs something. At present the best thing that can be said about it is that it is “somewhat watchable”.
The show needs some type of re-tooling because, at present, it is simply a poor version of “Reba” her old series.
As stated above, I think they will give MC 13 episodes to turn it around.

  • Ted Craig

Did anybody see the recent Retentionista article at Variety?

I still think (barring Total Comedy Pilot Failure) that the Friday shows boil down solely to scheduling:

Some comedy is leaving Wednesday. ABC will want to try a new comedy after MF.
The Tuesday block looks dead, and none of the ratings are bad enough for cancellation, so therefore at least one existing Wed comedy is headed to Friday.

So it all depends on Friday’s schedule. If ABC sticks with one hour (and they have healthy Friday non-comedies in 20/20, Shark Tank, etc.) MC is absolutely dead, and if ABC moves two existing comedies to Friday, LMS can only hope for a 13 episode midseason spackle order. If ABC expands to two hours of comedies on Fridays, then both are likely to survive.

Given the luck ABC has had with comedy development, I would guess one new show airs on Wednesdays, Neighbors moves to Fridays, LMS lives and MC dies.

And Happy Endings will be moved to TBS to be paired up with Cougar Town.

That would be great wouldn’t it? I just don’t see it happening though. Cougar Town is doing OK for TBS but not gang busters enough to make them want to take another chance.
