The cancellation bear is going to miss catching Last Man Standing this season. With ratings on Friday averaging > 70% of ABC's overall spring average, it's time to move Last Man Standing to "likely to be renewed" status. There's not a lot of experience with drama renewals on Fridays, but that relative ratings level is well above what other networks have renewed Friday shows before. As for Malibu Country, I think its situation is still uncertain.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

LMS- possibly renewed!- good – I like that show!

  • Keyser

There’s only 18 shows for LMS this season as it was on the bubble to begin with. It started with only a 13 episode renewal and then they got more episodes added to it as it went. If it gets renewed for a 3rd season, will it get a full season of 24 or only another 18?

  • Dan

I would love Happy Endings moving to TBS as well, it would make a great pair with Cougar Town, but it seems like a longshot.

I think Malibu Country is dead, ABC has so many new comedies to test out, there’s no point to keep that one.

  • Dan

@Keyser – I’m sure if Last Man Standing gets renewed, it will be for 22 episodes for Fridays. I don’t know why ABC didnt have full seasons but thats seemed to be the tradition this year along with NBC

Both of ABC’s multi camera comedies got 18 episodes and NBC’s multi camera comedy Guys With Kids got 17 and Whitney got 16. A less then full order for both.

  • Jason

Yes to LMS. I really don’t think Malibu Country is dead. ABC owns it, unlike LMS, so it is less expensive to produce. From what I understand, Malibu had some hurdles, and maybe it needs to find it’s legs. I like Reba & Lily together, and I am hoping it gets another shot. Let’s see season 2, with a minimum episode order, and give it one more chance. I don’t really see anything else coming down the pike that would pull my interest to a Friday, which is pretty much a DVR night for me.

  • Jonay

If Body of Proof’s ratings recover like it did last year can we expect a renewal???

  • MJ

How can you say MC is dead???? it averages 1.2-1.5 consistantly, with 5-6 million viewers…all on a Friday night. I would think ABC would be happy with this.

  • David

I think there is a decent chance LMS (with MC) is moved back to Tuesday at 8. ABC is getting killed there and there’s no reason to think LMS can’t at least match it’s Friday #’s on Tuesday. If they want to build a full block, The Middle could be moved to Tuesday at 9, though they would need a strong new show to take over Wed. at 8. Suburgatory is not strong enough to do so.

  • Ted Craig

    The Middle isn’t going anywhere.

Finally!, “Castle” has the green, toothy, smiley faces.

  • Bern

Hopefully MC gets renewed. Way better than LMS.

  • Fred

What about one of ABC’s most profitable programs, SHARK TANK?
Is ABC bringing back EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER?
Also, the TASTE is not doing that well. Wouldn’t place it on Tuesday.

  • Ultima

ABC needs to get their top dramas off this insanely, annoying hiatus schedule.

The season is 35 weeks long; most of ABC dramas are serialized; the full season shows only have 22-24 episodes. You want an impossible solution to this problem.

  • Chris

Well when you consider the retention Malibu Country has out of Last Man Standing, I would say that it’s good for renewal as well.

  • Chris

@David LMS averaged a 2.5 on Tuesdays last season. If ABC moves it back to Tuesdays at 8pm I’m assuming they would want ratings comparable to its first season. You’re saying if it gets 1.5 on Tuesdays at 8pm, then it’ll be safe. I don’t think so buddy. ABC is more lenient for LMS because it’s on Fridays where it’s typically harder to get higher demos and good viewership. The standards for shows on these nights are completely different. I feel safer with LMS staying on ABC’s Friday nights where they can easily pull 1.4-1.6. Tuesdays are rough.

  • Fred

My ever changing Fall 2013 schedule:

BACHELOR-2 hours. Great couterprograming against NFL and TWD.

DWTS-2hours- Only if it performs well in the spring. If not, 2 new sitcoms
    NEW DRAMA- 10:00

DWTS-Only if it performs well in the spring. If not LMS and/or Surgatory or new sitcoms.
CASTLE-Time for this show to help a drama at 10:00.
NEW DRAMA- 10:00-Bring back NASHVILLE midseason.

New sitcom- LMS should be saved for midseason
New sitcom-Suburgatory should be saved for midseason

NEW SHOW- SHIELD should perform well againt X FACTOR and IDOL later on.
    SCANDAL- 10:00- .

SHARK TANK- I rather see profitable unscripted here. LMS should have a strong enough following by now do well elsewhere. Probably even better.

So 3 new 1 hour dramas. And 2 new 1/2 hour sitcoms for the Fall.
