The cancellation bear is going to miss catching Last Man Standing this season. With ratings on Friday averaging > 70% of ABC's overall spring average, it's time to move Last Man Standing to "likely to be renewed" status. There's not a lot of experience with drama renewals on Fridays, but that relative ratings level is well above what other networks have renewed Friday shows before. As for Malibu Country, I think its situation is still uncertain.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I just want Once and Nashville renewed

  • Fred

Back in 2002 ABC aired a very funny sitcom called LESS THAN PERFECT. It had a fantastic ensemble and it lasted until 2006. 81 episodes aired. Does anybody know if it ever made to syndication?

  • Ultima

ABC Sunday schedule for the rest of the season…

    17 March – all new
    24 March – all new
31 March – Once repeat, Revenge/Red Widow new
7 April – all repeats (ACM Awards)
14 April – Once recap, Revenge/Red Widow repeats
21 April – Once new, HHOF movie
    28 April – all new
    5 May – all new
12 May – Once finale, Revenge two-hour finale
19 May – Billboard Music Awards

I expect they’ll end up dropping the Red Widow repeats to end it before sweeps and replace it with Shark Tank repeats or some such.

  • Ultima

Does anybody know if it ever made to syndication?

Yes; it used to be on Lifetime.

  • Fred

Thanks, I was a big fan of that show.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Fred: “In addition BOP seems like a good candidate for syndication . Procedurals usually do well.”

Nope. BoP will only have 40 odd episodes by end of this season. It would have to go more than two more seasons to reach syndication numbers – and that’s with 22 episode seasons, not 13 episodes as they’ve been doing. It will never be profitable at its current ratings long enough to get another season, let alone two or three more.

And it will never see 2.0 again. It did manage to climb from 1.4 to 2.0 last season near the end, but it won’t repeat that feat this season. Instead it will drop to 1.0 or below before it ends this season. It’s been stable at 1.2 so far but DST has yet to set in.

    It’s doomed.

goodness, more breaks to come for revenge and OUAT. ugh. but WHAT!? 2-HOUR FINALE FOR REVENGE!? HELLLLL YES! i approve! ahh, i hope it’s as good as last year’s! i am R E A D Y for revenge to comeback and be the sensation it was/starting to become last season and early this season.

  • Bee

my only hopes for ABC’s new season:

    1. PLEASE let them work out something for sundays. but i still doubt it because EVERY YEAR they just love taking the hits and can’t stop themselves from airing during sweeps. at the very least, they can hold off on the sunday line-up till mid october like OUAT’s premiere last season. that way, repeats during spring are minimized.

    2. please renew nashville and DON’T leave it for mid-season. it’s a quality drama with a fanbase and definite potential for success/growth. it just needs more help than suburgatory and its 1.9-2.3s. it’s a great fit for wednesdays at 10, which was a total death slot until revenge showed up.

    3. unless #1 happens, PLEASE don’t get excited and move scandal to sundays at 9PM. i don’t want another buzzy show to die there. and keeeep working the hype on scandal. everyone watching this show loves it and it has the potential to be a beast.

how i wish ABC would air repeats of some of their dramas over the summer. revenge, nashville, and scandal could benefit for sure.

I just want to hear the words “Malibu Country has been renewed for a full season” The actors and writers and viewers will take care of the rest. :))

  • tobes

Just curious, if the new shows premiering in the summer like Mistresses or Under the Dome are successful can they potentially get a full season order and go into the fall or will they just be summer series?

  • Ultima

Just curious, if the new shows premiering in the summer like Mistresses or Under the Dome are successful can they potentially get a full season order and go into the fall

Having their second season moved from summer to winter or spring is much more likely than being extended into the fall.

The last show I can think of getting promoted to a fall timeslot immediately out of a summer run was Shark Tank; even then, it was brief and mostly to accomodate the unusual scheduling of V.

  • rob60990

Revenge getting a 2 hour finale. :D It better be an actual 2 hour finale and not just 2 random episodes stuck together.

@HAPPY, terrible schedule. Only premiering 1 new drama? And having The Bachelor & DWTS on at the same time for 2 seasons each? Overkill and would kill both shows faster. Also The Neighbors is more likely to go to Fridays than Suburgatory. In fact, Fridays is the only way The Neighbors even gets renewed.

  • Annie Orhan

    @Nick L.

Revenge just rose back to a 2.0 and your saying it should be canceled I mean come on OUAT is only doing a 2.4 I mean really?

I think your going a little overboard there gonna cancel there good Drama’s and replace em with what?

What other shows are gonna do any better on Sun considering the scheduling that ABC does…

That’s why the ratings are in the toilet in the first place way to many breaks and scheduling them against too steep of competition…….

  • SJ

A four-week break for Revenge still to come.! *smh*

  • Ultima

A four-week break for Revenge still to come.! *smh*

I thought that people didn’t want ABC airing it against awards shows and didn’t want off, on, off scheduling. So they don’t do that, and then people complain that they’re not doing it!

  • Ultima

Awful schedule. I don’t like any of the moves and only two hours of new shows is ridiculous.

  • ad

How are people watching suburgatory and the neighbours but not happy endings… are people all sniffing glue or something?

I think that if both Malibu Country and Nashville get renewed they should move Malibu Country to Weds at 830 because the shows main character is a huge country music artist and both are about music, why not pair them together? Nashville ain’t getting much of suburgatorys demo anyway.
