Golden Boy is staying on Tuesday (after one disastrous Friday outing last week), and Vegas is moving to Fridays. That's just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, both shows are going to be dinner for the cancellation bear.

CBS will cancel at least one more of its spring dramas to make room on their schedule next Fall. That cancellation will come from among CSI:NY, The Good Wife and The Mentalist. Sadly, whatever decision metrics CBS will use are completely hidden to us, and my guess that of those three CSI:NY is going away boils down to two things (1) It's oldest, and likely most expensive, and (2) its season ended early, with only 17 episodes. Admittedly, those are a shaky basis for my prediction, but if I'm going to decide by the end of the season regardless, that's all I'm likely to have.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I am ticked off. A quality show like Vegas is going to be cancelled? This sucks. How about moving it to an earlier time? Normally, shows that late are those that kids can’t watch. You have NCIS and NCIS LA on before it that have more issues that would concern parents than Vegas. Move it to Sunday if you must but keep it for it is a great show with a great cast.

I am dissappointed that “Vegas” will be cancelled. I guess that I am one of “The Few” who likes it.

Don’t cancel Golden Boy. Yes, it’s yet another cop show and we probably have too many cop shows on TV, but it’s still a good show. It should be given time to flesh itself out. At least give it one or two seasons.

Look OK as long as they keep CSI NY on and get rid of underboss

  • Rob

If CBS would get their time slots in order there Sunday shows would get better ratings. I’m a big fan of the Mentalist but it nearly always comes on an hour or so late. If you have it set to record on the DVR,you have to extend the recording an extra two hrs to make sure it records. This happens almost weekly.

PLEASE SAVE GOLDEN BOY… I FIND IT VERY ENJOYABLE AND I am intrigued as to how Walt becomes the Comissioner.

  • Deb f

Get Alicia and Will together & end their misery.
There’s too many CSI’s there getting boring
I love the mentalist but if he has to go let him catch Red John & call it done
We like closure!! (Please don’t let him be Red John!!)

Give Archie Panjabi her own kick butt dective series!!
She’s too cool to leave hanging!!

Can’t believe Vegas is being cancelled. It’s awesome.

i want CBS to renew csi ny and vegas im sick and tired of the networks cancelling the good shows and keeping the ‘high raters’ that suck!

  • Matthew

The golden boy and the mentalist are both great shows I just dont want to watch eather at 10pm

  • Mailyn Mercer

Golden Boy is my new favorite! Don’t cancel. Love Golden Boy, Person of Interest, Hawaii 5o, Amazing Race, Survivor, Blue Bloods. Don’t XL Golden Boy.

Hopefully another network will pick up Golden Boy and Vegas if they should be dropped. Except for the poor voice sound quality which is run over by background music, in my opinion as a former street cop investigator, it has the most realistic choreography of any police show ever. Vegas has just as much twist and excitement.
