Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult :oops: 0.42
90210 canceled 0.52
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.79
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.90
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.95
Supernatural renewed 1.46
Arrow renewed 1.60
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

One of the more ridiculous Fan Excuse Bingo plays the cancellation bear sees in our comments is something on the order of "The Carrie Diaries has no lead in". That's complete nonsense.

Do the bingo players imagine that CW affiliates broadcast dead air at 7:30pm?

As a matter of fact, the local syndicated shows that those CW affiliates broadcast at 7:30 averaged a 0.78 adults 18-49 rating from Monday -Friday last week, that's better than all but 3 of CW's primetime hours for original episodes.

Other similar nonsense phrases to look for from the bingo players "it's a self starter", "it gets no support", etc. Treat those confused bingo players as you wish.

I was waiting for another week of stable ratings before moving Hart of Dixie to "likely to be renewed". Perhaps Robert was too. He beat me to it on Sunday. I pretty much agree with his HOD logic (2nd season show, ratings higher recently than TCD & BATB, CW won't cancel all 3), but differ a bit on The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast. While I believe that the CW will cancel one of the two, I don't believe they will cancel both. More on that next week.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Veronica Mars was a huge failure, eventhough it was well promoted and had the best leadins. It aired after top model and Gilmore Girls. They even replayed the first season during cbs primetime for a couple weeks. But no matter what it was one of the networks lowest rated shows

  • Annie

    I hope The Carrie Diaries is renewed. I am far from a teen….in fact I am a 70 year old grandmother, but I think it is a good show for young teens and “tweens” and a pretty good model, although it is a bit understated. I think high schools are much more fearsome places these days with much more violence. Carrie

    I hope The Carrie Diaries is not cancelled. I don’t think it is realistic to see a 16 year old girl running around in New York and going to clubs with adults, dressed like an adult, and working at an internship such as Carrie’s in the time period it portrays. Having said that, it is a harmless view of wide-eyed teens trying to act grown up and the problems parents have controlling their teenage children. It could be worse. I don’t think it hurts to have a relatively innocent show among the violent ones, so teens and tweens have a choice. And the show is cute! BTW, I am not a teen, but a 70 year old grandmother..I know I would like my young grandkids to watch this show.

    Tom: “It’s the creation of a few adolescents pounding on the PCA virtual voting button over and over like a troop of monkeys on crack.”

    Bwahahahaha! That image is in my head now! :-)

    Annie: TCD has ZERO chance of being renewed. It might be a nice show (I don’t watch it), but it’s dying on the vine. And since the primary demo is 18-49 and preferably 18-34, it’s clear not even teens are watching it.

  • Richard Steven Hack

    Feinn: You’re right. All the stories about it say it was ratings challenged for its whole run. But look at the ratings they had compared to the HIGHEST ratings the CW has NOW! It’s almost DOUBLE what the CW rates now! All I can say is…wow…

    Veronica Mars just reached $2,000,000. CW shouldn’t have cancelled that show.

  • Adrian

    I think I read somewhere Ostroff cancelled Veronica Mars because she didn’t like the direction the show was taking.

    No one else is to blame for the deplorable state of the CW.

  • Dave

    I heard it’s on Netflix. I’ve always wanted to watch but read that it was abruptly cancelled w/o a proper ending so I turned away.

    With a movie announced, I’ll be watching it for sure now!

  • JJA

    I wouldn’t say Veronica Mars was abruptly canceled. At least, not in the same way Secret Circle ended, where everything was left up in the air. It was more like the ending of Nikita season 2–that phase of the story ended, but there was clearly more story to tell.

    Had VM been given a season 4, it would have flash-forwarded a few years. So, basically, VM will be picking-up right where it left off. It’s amazing how that worked out!!

  • Cassie

    This is a big FU to CW re: Veronica Mars kickstarter. Wow, just WOW!

  • Sam

    @ Patrrick

    Nope that actually isn’t true. The also ordered a pilot of Company Town and that’s not a genre show. If picked up, it would very likely be a perfect fit for HoD.

    TCD will be cancelled. It has crappy ratings and only 13 episodes. It doesn’t make sense to renew it, not even as a midseason show.

    BatB I can see getting another season. They could pair it up with Nikita. I hear it is cheap to produce and has great international sales so that might save it.

    Here is how the CW Network shecdule gonna be for their 2013/14 season starting with

    9:00 The Carrie Dairies {new time}
    8:00 B&TB {New Day&time}
    9:00 {New}
    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 {new}
    8:00 Vampire Dairies
    9:00 Originals{new}
    8:00 Nitika
    9:00 Supernatural {new Day}

  • Shaz

    @Tom “Since B&B hit its lowest ratings after the so-called award…”

    Actually the first two episodes after the PCAs went up to 0.7 then started falling again. So it’s possible that the PCA publicity got additional people to check out BATB… then they didn’t like what they saw and quit watching.

  • cas

    Aren’t TCD and BATB ratings similar to TSC and Ringer ratings last year? And both those shows were canceled, so why do these 2 shows deserve to not be canceled?

  • Davis

    Because last year before cancelling Ringer and the Secret Circle, they canceled H8R and One Tree Hill. (2 series) This year, they have already cancelled Emily Owens MD, Gossip Girl, 90210, and soon, Cult. (3-4 Series)

  • Tom

    @ Shaz

    The same thing happened to Ringer and the Secret Circle last season. So, it’s just as likely that other factors were responsible.

    BTW, I agree with you about Veronica Mars. Kristin Bell is a terrific actress.

  • andri

    Never seen one episode of beauty and the beast.isn’t. it fox family, nickelodeon programming fare?

  • axola

    I think both shows will be canceled.

    TCD’s numbers have been awful from the very beginning. And I think thats why this season has only 13 episodes. No way the thought this was going to be a hit, otherwise another show would be the one getting half season.

    BATB’s numbers are also abysmal. It has the strongest lead in and it’s been losing viewers week after week. TSC numbers were better and still got canceled I guess because both shows are more expensive to produce than your average CW show.

  • KS

    I haven’t read the previous comments. I am just posting my opinion and I am sure lot of posters may share my opinion and may have already posted it here.

    TCD and Beauty – I strongly believe TCD will be renewed over Beauty. Because, TCD would do better than Beauty if it is paired with TVD.

    Also, the real ratings of Beauty are yet to come. I believe Beauty ratings would slide just like TSC and TCD on the other hand may maintain the 0.4.

    Also, I still think there is good chance for renewal of both the shows!

  • Brandy

    @KS, first qe dont know how CD wouldve done after VD cause it wasnt put there.Its very possible and likley that it would be getting the same ratings as is now because most VD fans dont stsy to watch whats after it.
    Second, sure it could maintain 0 4 but thats still terrible for a first season show with all the promotion it and reruns it got. I gaurentee CW had much higher hopes and expectations for it.It dosent do great in dvr and im not sure about online/ondemand or internationally or the cost but ive heard its exspensive(shooting in NY, the 80s clothes ect).Now Beauty is cheap to make, does well in dvr,well online, sold well internationally,has repeated fairly well the last two or three weeks.CD is a teen show, which CW is moving away from and Beauty is a genre showshow which is where cw is going next season.Beauty has a better/higher season ratings average than CD.Id say BaTB has the advantage.However, as you said BaTB may drop in coming weeks.I wouldnt be suprised to have both cancelled and somewhat suprised if Beautys renewed.But there is no way both get renewed:Pedowitz has rumored to be cleaning house and both are rating poorly.CW will lilkley put on 5 new shows on next season, maybe more.
