Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013.  (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 10, 2013):

The cancellation bear is of the mind that Community, Go On and Whitney are all potential NBC sitcom renewals (Parks & Recreation is certain to be renewed), but he's not making the move yet. Chicken? Cluck! But Community's 1.9 premiere rating said "certain renewal" and two weeks later it hit a series low 1.1 rating. Its recovered since then, but the cancellation bear is still worried about touching that potentially hot stove again.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I can see Community coming back along with P&R but goodbye to all the other sitcoms. Next season will be a year of rebuilding & hopefully the new MJF show will be a ratings winner. If Revolution is split again I think the new Crossbones at only 10 episodes would be a much better fill in than Deception has been. Word has it John Malkovich will be Blackbeard not Hugh Laurie who passed.

    Any hope for Hannibal? (NOT)

I’m just as chicken as TCB here, as I wouldn’t renew any of the losers. But then, the debuts are faring even worse, so the quandry is more pronounced.

Whitney and The New Normal are the only NBC sitcoms I watch. One has turned to utter crap and has zero laughs any more and rightfully deserves to be cancelled. Whitney, however is hilarious, pulls consistent numbers against strong competition, does amazing in repeats, I mean last week it got 1.0 for a repeat, some of NBC’s sitcoms don’t get that for originals, so I really think it deserves to be renewed and it’s not just me being a hopeful fan.

@Yessir signing a pilot doesnt mean anything, damon wayons jr signed for New girl, but was pulled back when Happy Endings got renewed.

I don’t think Go On fans have anything to worry about. It will have little to do with retention though. Go On could come back, if the decision had to be made right now. The Voice will only make it more certain.

The New Normal wasn’t pulling above a 2.0 back when it was sandwiched between a post-Voice Go On and the rather successful (NBC speaking) Parenthood. It would have to do at least that for NBC to renew it. My guess is it won’t. I also expect The Voice to be down from the fall which won’t help things, but we shall find out soon.

Could somebody make a list of all the new shows they most likley will air in fall?

  • Lisbeth Slander

I hadn’t watched anything on NBC since Will & Grace signed off, after my friend yammering on to me about Parenthood being the best show on network TV, I caved in, started it and fell in love with Parenthood, so much so that I’ve started Friday Night Lights and love it as well. So to see today that the same team is doing an About a Boy adaptation I’ve picked up a show I haven’t even seen a preview for yet. :)

  • Jonay

Why doesn’t NBC just Renew Community, Parks and Recreation, Go On and Whitney and just keep one night of comedy??

  • frodo

The New Normal is dead at this point it can barely manage to beat the CW shows let alone give NBC a competitive slot. That show is almost 99.9% certain to be canceled.

Go On and Whitney are both a complete mess but I can see them getting the renewal just because NBC is a mess.

Community and Parks will both get the renewal.

  • Pepper

Community and Go On will be renewed; I’m also inclined to think that Whitney may also be spared because let’s face it, the bear is already getting a mighty fine meal this year with all those red faces.

  • PurpleDrazi

Now that 30 Rock is gone the only thing I watch regularly on NBC is Grimm and that seems to be pretty safe. As for the comedies…I got no idea.

For me personally I wouldn’t care if they scrapped all the comedies and started over from scratch.

I am pretty confident about Whitney until yesterday when I saw the lead male (Whitney’s Husband) is starring in one of the new pilots for next fall…now I’m not so sure.

Go On and Community maybe but really both should be axed…alas NBC is such a disaster that a 1.1 isn’t bad enough to cancel a show…hahahaha!
