Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

“Whoa, Idol at a 3.0….could it average BELOW a 3 this season? I thought it would still be next season before that would happen!”

No chance of that. They have enough 4s and high-3s to finish well above 3.0 for the season. This rating will likely be readjusted to a 3.1, but if the house continues to burn, the people will flee like rats and roaches, and we could conceivably see a 2.x next week.

If any telecast falls to a 2.5 or 2.6 before the season is over, we will most likely see a 1.x next year.

    @cd:

What does the president have to do with last night’s TV ratings?

  • sarah nz

    @ qrwanda

Will try to answer your question – but hopefully the experts (Ultima, Eridapo, etc) might comment.

The basketball audience is part of the rating we see now in the prelimaries, the finals will strip out the audience that watched Basketball instead of PoI and then add the timeshifted/dvr audience until 3am (i think).

Not sure but don’t think some of the PoI people pre-empted by basketball got a chance to see the episode later on if for example it played at 1am most people would record and watch the next day/night (would become part of the 3 day/7 day ratings) – or go to torrents, etc.

  • sarah nz

    * additionally, PoI if it does have any adjustment historically (not sure if that the word i want) adjusts down a tenth, from memory it is unusual if it adjust’s up in the finals.

  • Brie is a Bust

All of that trash talk from Community on the other NBC comedies and look at what their comedy did last night. Whitney was never this low in viewership or ever lost to a CW show and they go go against Arrow which beats most NBC comedies every week for originals. Even a repeat of Whitney almost beat it. Did Go On beat Community too? PATHETIC!

    Whitney (WED)
    1.2/3.38m

    Whitney R (WED)
    0.8/2.45m

    Community (THU)
    1.0/2.61m

    THAT’S REAL BAD! GO P&R!

  • Brie is a Bust

A show that’s really starting to grow on me is Beauty and the Beast that’s turning into a really good show.

  • bruce

I am glad to seethat 1600 Penn is slowly but surely climbing up in the ratings. This show is a show that has a story line that is fun clean, and one that most Americans will find very non-offensive .I was concerned that the preempting would take away the fallowing and it did but they came back along with others . So I will hope that these numbers grow and the show gets renewed

  • rob60990

Not shocked Grey’s hit a series low last night. It should rebound since its new the next 3 weeks.

The results show for Idol will certainly fall below a 3 very soon. I don’t think the Wednesday performance show will though.

CBS’ ratings are a hot mess. Will wait for the finals.

Only Community can make Whitney look good.

    @ Melissa on page 4

“POI also had a lead-in 2 points higher.”

Do you mean TBBT with 4.5 and then TAAHM with 3.3 ?

TBBT with 4.5 had 1.6 more than PoI’s 2.9 – close but not quite the 2.0 you stated.

TAAHM with 3.3 has 0.4 more than PoI’s 2.9 – this may be the closest for both of them since they got matched up. (from memory so could be horribly wrong)

Were you averaging the TBBT and TAAHM ?

Are you saying that GA is lead independant ? Can understand Sharktank being a poor lead in, but GA should be a self starter after 10 years (or is it 9 ?) in my opinion.

  • tj

I tried to watch, my whole family did – it has been a get together time. But the judges made it unwatchable. Someone up there thinks the show is about the judges and their nattering inanities, bad clothing and repetitive tips.

    @ Ashton Butcher

“Beauty and the Beast has actually become a consistent performer over the last few episodes compared to The Secret Circle last season around this time of year.”

You know, Ashton, it wouldn’t kill you to do some research before you started drawing inaccurate comparisons like this. As of yesterday, B&B scored three consecutive 0.5 ratings and four total 0.5 ratings in its first 15 shows. I guess you could call that consistent alright – consistently subpar. In contrast, the Secret Circle didn’t receive its first 0.5 rating until its 19th episode. This was the first of three consecutive 0.5 ratings before it closed with a 0.6. For our purposes, you should note that B&B scored 0.5 for Episodes 13 – 15 while the Secret Circle scored 0.8, 0.7 and 0.7 for the same Episodes. That’s still pretty consistent. So, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

    @ Brie is a Bust

Right because Whitney is in a terribly competitive timeslot on Wednesday.

Lol. You were .2 above Community, you shouldn’t be thrilled. Community still has a few months worth of episodes to get back up there in ratings, Whitney has 2 weeks to climb out of the gutter.

  • rob60990

I don’t think the CW needs to renew either The Carrie Diaries or B&TB. Along with Arrow, TVD, & Supernatural, Nikita & Hart of Dixie are definitely returning. That’s 5 hours right there, plus if ANTM has the same scheduling as last year, it’s 6. They can launch 3-4 new dramas without renewing either show. Neither are needed.

  • Brie is a Bust

    @ Tom

You sound like a butt-hurt TSC fan you were mad dude. Not sure what Ashton was referring to but the show always draws around 1.5 million and VD has been lower in the ratings this year.

  • Bri

    @Ash

‘POI is well promoted? Since when? The only promos I see for the show is after the episode ends for next weeks episode and that’s about it.’

POI gets lots of promo, I see them all the time, same with TGW and the last time CM was new we had three POI promo during the episode.

  • Matt

I would laugh so hard if IDOL was adj. down to a 2.9…

  • Brie is a Bust

    @ John A

Who said I was a Whitney fan I just noticed how you Community fan boys like to rag on other NBC comedies then when push comes to shove the ratings are absolutely dreadful.

Please don’t give me that competition fan excuse bull, every show has competition. You Community use that when the ratings are low. You’re done BYE!

  • qrwanda

Thanks sarah nz! As long as the viewership stays up & around 14 million I shall be happy.

By the way, is it possible for a show to continue to dip in the ratings share, say all the way to 2.0 or into the 1s but yet remain or build on the current viewership above 14 million?

That would be wierd. But I guess possible.

  • Ash

    @qrwanda

That would mean the show would have to skew REALLY old.

  • John A

    @ Brie is a Bust

Who said I was a Community fan? Obviously you’re extremely ignorant of how tv works, just don’t be shocked if Community ends up getting renewed and Whitney doesn’t.
