With nothing new in the ABC predictions this week, and plenty of people continuing to ask the Cancellation Bear about Happy Endings, I figured I could throw it into the headline this week. I have no way of accurately guessing whether a cable network will want to pick it up, but fans are kidding themselves if they think ABC will renew it.

In other news, Body Of Proof ratings remain woeful, but if the California tax credit saved it last season, it could save it again this season. And I'm keeping Malibu Country as a "toss up" for now, hoping to be aided by either a late season ratings surge or dive. That would get me to make a change before the end of the season and get it into the headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Dan

    Here we are again with the anti-The Neighbors club… :P

    Clearly you want The Neighbors to be canceled by shipping it to the inferior slots of Tuesday’s or Friday’s. With what’s happening with Malibu and what happened to B!tch, no way is ABC doing the same mistake again. :(

    Likely, their keeping the same schedule with Family Tools and How to Live… on Fridays.

  • Eric

    @matt. Your kidding about shark tank being a midseason replacement right? It’s kicking butt on Fridays and they play it on prime time on days they need help. There is no chance it’s not going to be on the fall schedule.

  • Ted Craig

    @Just Desserts
    I like The Neighbors and I think there’s a good chance it gets renewed, but even I think it gets moved. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Suburgatory moved as well because MF and The Middle ratings should jump up next year (syndication bump) and ABC will want those slots to introduce new shows.

    TBS might work…Happy Endings right after CougarTown….except Cougar Town isn’t really doing much for TBS ( the BBT reruns that air before and after Cougar Town scored higher ratings…which is sad) so I doubt they’ll make the commitment.

    ABC screwed the pooch with this one. Once they notice the combo wasn’t working out they shouldve cancelled Apt. 23 and the Neighbors and put Happy Endings and Subguratory in their original spots. Now they might lose two good shows ( Subguaratory wont last another season with the downward spiral it’s goin through)

  • Adrian

    FX would be … amazing. And yeah, as mentioned TBS or even TNT would be great, but I don’t think it’s going to be possible.

  • Jonny C…. formerly Jon

    @Just Desserts

    Didn’t Neighbors just scored a 1.4 the other day….on a repeat night? That’s pretty bad.

    I doubt it’s gonna get cancelled but don’t be stupid in thinking it won’t get moved next season.

  • Chris

    @JustDesserts there’s nothing wrong with The Neighbors going to Fridays. Tuesday would be the day they put it on to screw it over. If they put it on Friday, then they actually want it to live. It would probably go behind LMS. Since networks are lenient on Friday ratings, The Neighbors’ 1.4 last wednesday would get the show renewed easily on Fridays.

  • Dan

    @ted Craig – Exactly

    @Just Desserts – I love The Neighbors but the shows best chance is that it gets renewed and moved to another night. And the only reason I believe that is because history repeats itself. ABC moved both Wed comedies Happy Endings and Apartment 23 off the night to premiere a new comedy, whos to say next season they won’t do it to The Neighbors and Suburgatory.

    That’s if The Neighbors gets renewed but without other comedies airing new eps TN has declined sharply. Suburgatory will get a third and fourth season for syndication.

    It’s even more likely that ABC dumps low rated Neighbors and Malibu Country and keep a new show like How to Live With Your Parents.

  • John K.

    If Happy Endings can get a 1.3 or above on Friday nights, it may be renewed. It is close to syndication, a full 24 episode season would put it close. Why is it that Nikita gets more “Smiles” in basically the same scenario. Plus, if it gets the same (or better) than Malibu Country, and is much closer to syndication, I think they would go with Happy Endings over Malibu Country. Anyway, I wish ABC would air the 4 episodes over 4 weeks to get a better picture of how well it is going to do on Fridays. On March 29th it is airing into a new Shark Tank, so that is good, but the April 5 episodes are followed by a night full of repeats on ABC, so it may not do that well.

  • Just Desserts

    @Ted Craig

    The Middle and Modern Family are likely to show aging (i.e. lower ratings) next year so I don;t necessarily agree that syndication equals ratings rise.

    @Jonny C…. formerly Jon
    Didn;t you read the Bubble Watch last Sunday… it was the only new show out of five. It doesn;t matter.

    Your previous post just said that moving Happy Endings was a bad idea then your pushing it to The Neighbors? :( I don’t get it.

    PS: The ratings for The Neighbors isn;t miles behind The Middle and it was able to equal Suburgatory once this year so any change would be unjustifiable.

    how is happy endings certaint to be cancelled and community on the bubble

  • Just Desserts

    @Dan

    Thank you for not being a hater. :)

    While it may be true that history repeats itself, I think there should be caution in believing in that in this case. We all know what happened to Apartment 23 after all. I;m afraid The Neighbors may suffer the same fate next year.

    @Chris

    Friday is a really risky business. First of all, The Neighbors is not compatible with Last Man Standing. The only show compatible with LMS is Malibu Country. With Jenni getting nixed due to unforseen circumstances, I still believe LMS and MC are a packaged deal.

    The only hope of getting The Neighbors is to have another compatible show (i.e Happy Endings, Suburgatory, or How to Live…) and with the latter two likely staying at Wednesdays, it is now pretty much up to HE.

  • lll

    I still think there is a chance for Happy Endings fans. It can be paired with Last Man Standing next season if it can pull in Last Man Standing ratings on friday. It will be hard; it will stand alone airing back-to-back episodes with no show to prop it up, but it can be done.

  • PurpleDrazi

    @jupiter3765
    “ow is happy endings certaint to be cancelled and community on the bubble”

    Different Networks, different situations, different ratings bar…

  • Fred

    This might work for ABC next season:

    Sunday

    AFHV-7:00
    DWTS/BACHELOR when DWTS cycle ends
    NASHVILLE-10:00

    Monday

    DWTS/Another profitable unscripted show after DWTS ends
    CASTLE-Time for CASTLE to help a new drama
    NEW DRAMA-10:00

    Tuesday- ABC used to air highly rated sitcoms on Tuesday. Worth a shot

    MIDDLE- Starts another great night of comedy
    NEIGHBORS- If can hold on to lead in quickly replace with another.
    SUBURGATORY-
    NEW SITCOM
    NEW DRAMA-10:00

    Wednesday

    LAST MAN STANDING- Should improve on Friday’s #s.
    NEW SITCOM
    MODERN FAMILY
    NEW SITCOM
    REVENGE-10:00- May improve on what NASHVILLE has been managing here.

    Thursday

    NEW SHOW-SHIELD- Should draw more viewers than ALL of the other past dramas here.
    GREY’S ANATOMY
    SCANDAL-10:00

    FRIDAY

    SHARK TANK
    PRIME TIME/Another unscripted show later in the season
    20/20-10:00

    So 6 new scripted shows. 3 dramas and 3 sitcoms.

  • Rare

    If Happy Endings can do better than Malibu Country (I don’t know that it can), I can see it getting renewed.

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

    @Rebecca omg thank you for the tip about 666! i was waiting for them to release it during the summer (probably that’s not gonna happen).

  • Fred

    cont…
    I forgot my top ABC show OUAT!! Leave on Sunday 8:00.

    Rather see ABC try and build a solid comedy block on Tuesday. Wiser to keep profitable unscripted shows on low viewership Friday.

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

    For the delusional HE fans that think TBS will save it to pair it with Cougar Town, i doubt it’ll happen. Cougar Town was in better shape when it got cancelled and it got to air all its season without burn offs and being pulled off the schedule. Besides CT is not down great now so why would tbs risk a failure with HE?

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

    I am hoping so badly that Splash fails. The only time I liked reality shows is when they give scripted shows good lead in. But I’d take anything above that. Burnoffs of 666 or double up Don’t Trust the B for a while.
