With nothing new in the ABC predictions this week, and plenty of people continuing to ask the cancellation bear about Happy Endings, I figured I could throw it into the headline this week. I have no way of accurately guessing whether a cable network will want to pick it up, but fans are kidding themselves if they think ABC will renew it.

In other news, Body of Proof ratings remain woeful, but if the California tax credit saved it last season, it could save it again this season. And I'm keeping Malibu Country as a "toss up" for now, hoping to be aided by either a late season ratings surge or dive. That would get me to make a change before the end of the season and get it into the headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    You’re welcome, re: 666PA online.

  • Iury

I’m so sad to read that ! I love Happy Endings so much ! I think ABC didn’t treated the show well , They aired episodes out of the order on season 1 . Hey @Bill If HE mark better ratings than Malibu country , that is a chance ? and What about syndication ?

  • Meg

Screw “The Neighbors”! “Happy Endings” was must-see TV for me! I even DVR’d it if I wasn’t home!! Clearly that show is the heir apparent for Friends after all these years. SIGH.

  • Jonay

Why is ABC going to cancel Happy Endings what about syndication ????

  • James

OUAT spinoff is officially in works according to deadline. I wonder if that will be picked up next season.

  • James

    BTW @Bill Gorman

Malibu Country only has 2 episodes left this season. I think it depends on if the net execs. like it or not. ha ha

  • Fred

Less risky schedule for next season :

Sunday- Highky rated contests are perfect counter programming against NFL and TWD.

DWTS/BACHELOR after DWTS cycle both 2 hrs

DWTS/Another unscripted program after DWTS cycle
CASTLE-About time Castle is promoted to help a New drama .
    New Show -10:00

Tuesday-Placing The highly anticipated SHIELD on
Tuesday at 8:00 Should strengthen ABC’s entire night.

New show- SHIELD- Hope this show is strong!
New drama- Might be helped by SHIELD .
    NASHVILLE – 10:00- Should improve upon BOP’s #s.

LAST MAN STANDING – If renewed, if not New Sitcom
SUBURGATORY – If renewed ,if not, New Sitcom
REVENGE- 10:00 – Shoukd improve upon NASHVILLE.

Thursday- No more costly dramas at 8:00!

New unscripted program – Better than expensive dramas against the BBT monster.

Friday – If sitcom block fails , bring back PRIME TIME.

SHARK TANK- may help new shows after.
    New Sitcom
    New Sitcom

A few new 1 hour programs and a couple of new 30 min sitcoms.

This new schedule is surely less risky than my previous effort.
However less risk is also less reward . Nevertheless this is a reasonable lineup .

  • Fred

If the OUAT spinoff is true than my Sunday lineup needs to be altered . ABC would surely place it after the original OUAT.
I’m such a huge fan of OUAT. Would love to watch another hour of magical television.

  • Ultima

Why is ABC going to cancel Happy Endings what about syndication ?

It needs another ~30 episodes for syndication and ABC is probably not willing to tolerate its abyssmal ratings to get it there.

  • The End

The Once spinoff might not even make it past the pilot phase. Certainly they are basing in the Alice in Wonderland world, but aren’t able to get Sebastian Stan to commit to a full season. It might not even work without his Mad Hatter character.

  • Anna

Happy Endings and Suburgatory are both excellent comedies. Very well written and very funny. I cannot figure out why they have not caught on.

  • forg

I read that ABC’s promo for Happy Endings Friday premiere has the words “if you want to save….” Anybody has seen it, is it true?

  • Justin

Maybe they can retool it so it’s a Multi-Camera comedy with a live audience so it can be with Last Man Standing/Malibu Country

  • Justin

If TBS won’t pick it up, Maybe the CW will? They could use a show that gets over a million viewers. Or NBC considering they’re losing at least 2-3 sitcoms this year (30 Rock, Office, UAN)

Or ABC could air it during the summer after Modern Family repeats?

  • Roy

Red Widow doesn’t look like it was the solution for
ABC’s Sunday 10:00pm slot. Feel bad for the people
working on the show who will lose their jobs but
think it looks good on the big shots at ABC
who screwed over the 4 million + dedicated fans
of ‘666 Park Ave’, by not having the decency
to air the final 3 episodes.

  • tobes

My ABC schedule for next fall

    8:00 Once Upon A Time
    9:00 *S.H.E.I.L.D*
    10:00 Castle
I think that SHIELD will be a solid performer on Sunday nights and I think castle has a loyal fanbase which will follow it to Sunday where ABC is having trouble.

    8:00 Dancing With The Stars
    9:00 Dancing With The Stars
    10:00 Nashville
I think ABC should launch Nashville out of DWTS because Nashville has potential to bring in good ratings and I believe they both are compatable

8:00 Dancing With The Stars Results
    9:00 Revenge
    10:00 *Betrayal*
I think moving Revenge to Tuesday’s will bring in good ratings because there’s not much going on during Tuesdays on tv and Betrayal has a similar premise to Revenge

    8:00 The Middle
    8:30 *Spy*
    9:00 Modern Family
    9:30 *Trophy Wife*
    10:00 *Westside*
I think the new comedies fit the family theme of the other comedies and I think Westside would go good in the 10:00 slot

    8:00 Shank Tank
    9:00 Greys Anatomy (final season)
    10:00 Scandal
Shark tank would be a good thing to put into the death slot and everything else on this night works well

    8:00 Last Man Standing
8:30 How To Live With Your Parents
    9:00 Suburgatory
    9:30 The Neighbors
    10:00 20/20
I think the Friday night comedy block should be expanded to 2 hours

Midseason: Murder In Manhattan, Gothica, Reckless, Super Fun Night, Mixology, Divorce: A Love Story

    Thoughts on my schedule???

I think there are 4 episodes of 666 Park Ave left to air. According to Rebecca the remaining eps are available online. But I rather watch it on my big screen TV. What a shame this well produced show failed so miserably.
