With nothing new in the ABC predictions this week, and plenty of people continuing to ask the cancellation bear about Happy Endings, I figured I could throw it into the headline this week. I have no way of accurately guessing whether a cable network will want to pick it up, but fans are kidding themselves if they think ABC will renew it.

In other news, Body of Proof ratings remain woeful, but if the California tax credit saved it last season, it could save it again this season. And I'm keeping Malibu Country as a "toss up" for now, hoping to be aided by either a late season ratings surge or dive. That would get me to make a change before the end of the season and get it into the headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    nooooooo!!!!! :(

What about USA Network? They need a solid comedy, and from what I hear they are putting the feelers out. If they could obtain HE and nail possible future syndication rights, that would be a potential win-win situation for everybody (including the fans, of course).

Odd in my thinking just 6 months ago it was thee hottest show everyone I knew was talking about it. Yea they slowed down but thats because the xmas break the 2 week breaks and can not forget the 6 week breaks then the winter breaks I guess I can see why ( even all the networks going down) lets put a new episode on then lets hit them with a 6 week break then new one when they don’t see it again boom summer break. Ahhh canceled love it

i hope Happy Endings and BOP gets renewed

“wouldn’t ABC be smart to renew it and put it back on after Modern Family? It saves the show, gets better ratings that Suburgatory, and will help Nashville”

It wouldn’t do better than Suburgatory is doing right now. its retention out of Modern Family is exactly the same, the only difference Modern Family is down about 20% from last year.

    @Laticia Jones

I admit, I’m biased. I am a very big fan of Happy Endings. So I love your idea of placing it after Modern Family again. Although I’m not so sure it would improve upon Suburgatory. Modern is weaker now than it was when HE aired after it. So not fair to say Suburgatory is weaker than HE.

As for Neighbors, not so sure what ABC should do with it. It seems to be a harmless silly comedy that may grow into a hit. ABC might want to be patient with this one. I don’t even watch it, but many in my family enjoy it. But I consistently watch The MIDDLE right behind it. Very funny indeed.

According to tvline, the plans for the OUAT spinoff are very real. TVline says that ABC is planning on using the spin-off during OUAT’s hiatus at midseason. I am not sure how this would fit in considering the awards season and all. Is ABC planning on trowing the spinoff with barely any lead-in support against the globes, the sports events and the grammys? not sure how this could work…

  • Fred

Well considering the showrunners involved, the spinoff should be pretty good. I loved LOST as well as OUAT. So I’m ready for their next effort no matter how they schedule it. Better if it is introduced after the original OUAT, at least the first few eps.

  • The End

I’m more interested in what direction the spinoff will go, as they originally planned to use the Mad Hatter as the main character, but the guy who plays him is unable to commit to a full season as he wants movie roles now.

All they’re pretty much saying about it, is that it’l be based in the Alice in Wonderland world, and likely won’t feature any characters from Once Upon a Time(Thus the term spinoff).

To the people whinging about Happy Endings being moved from Wednesdays – it had a whole season with a Modern Family lead in. Thats more than enough time for it to build a loyal audience which would follow it to another timeslot. But instead ratings dived, indicating that people were clearly only watching because it was airing after Modern Family. As for the 9.30 timeslot, I think everyone has expectations which are far too unrealistic. There are very few shows that pull spectacular numbers like Modern Family and Big Bang Theory.

  • AJH497

Great choice by Damon Wayans, Jr. to stick with Happy Endings instead of being on New Girl…

  • Chris

What happened to Body of Proof in between last season and this one, anyway? For me, it used to be a reasonably watchable (if uninspired) procedural with a decent cast, and all in all it wasn’t a bad way to while away a free hour. But two and a half episodes into this season, I was done with it for good. The plots got insanely dumb, the direction in the first two episodes was terrible, and the cast seems like they just don’t give a crap about being there anymore.

Did they get a new showrunner? A new writer’s room? Just a lower budget? I feel like *something* happened behind the scenes that derailed this show. Whatever it was certainly hasn’t helped its already-poor ratings, and I don’t know that even a good tax credit is going to be enough to get them another renewal. About the only thing they’ve got on their side besides that credit is how catastrophic ABC’s new dramas were this season; it’s just barely possible that ABC will think it’s not as bad to renew a failed show as it is to create yet another brand-new failed show to replace it. (Or at least *cheaper*, right?)

    8:00 SHIELD

  • David Howell

Hmm. ABC scheduling is always a little curious. I’m going with something a little radical.

MON: 8 Batchelor / DWTS / Batchelorette (one cycle of each per year), 10 Castle
TUE: 8 SHIELD / DWTS results, 9 new drama, 10 new drama
WED: 8 The Middle, 8:30 Suburgatory, 9 MF, 9:30 new comedy, 10 Nashville
    THU: 8 Primetime Nightline, 9 Grey’s, 10 Scandal
    FRI: 8 LMS, 8:30 The Neighbors, 9 Shark Tank, 10 20/20
SUN: 7 AFHV, 8 OUAT, 9 new drama, 10 Revenge

SHIELD has the potential to be a network game changer in the same way Fox was calling on The Following. It needs to be scheduled accordingly, and Tuesday can be a huge new night against surely the weakest broadcast slate on any weeknight. Going to one cycle a year of DWTS, during which SHIELD can go on hiatus allowing it to be almost rerun-free in fall and spring, facilitates that scheduling. Besides, the comedy logjam on Tuesdays has to be avoided; FOX won’t be abandoning the block with 90 minutes of it renewed, and if NBC plug MJF into Tuesday 9 out of The Voice…

Besides that, the scheduling is pretty static – only Neighbors moves to a new night, only Revenge and Suburgatory move slots, and only two other new shows are added, one of them with the network’s #1 leadin. Plus, the white flag is raised on Thursday 8 with Nightline, saving more expensive futility there. Grey’s doesn’t need a leadin anyway, as has been proven time and time again.

All this means ABC can concentrate almost their entire marketing effort on “Super Tuesdays.” All they need is a 9pm player that’s at least reasonably compatible. They must be piloting one, surely?

  • Tellitlikeitis

Happy Endings fans (the few that are left) are delusional.

  • Fred

Your dream forgot some of ABC’s most profitable programs AFHV,SHARK TANK, SPLASH,PRIME TIME, 20/20 etc… These programs are cheap and get decent ratings. They help make up for the expensive scripted failure every season.

However the most glaring omission is ABC most anticipated new show, S.H.I.E.L.D.

4 hours of DWTS seems like a bit much to me. However it isn’t the worst ideal I ever heard. I guess you want ABC to milk it for all its worth. Like NBC will be doing with the VOICE.

I never thought about placing REVENGE on Thursday at 8:00. Good counterprogramming against the BBT monster . It would surely improve upon past drama failures. Very interesting idea indeed. Just not sure if I would make that move if I was in charge.
