With nothing new in the ABC predictions this week, and plenty of people continuing to ask the Cancellation Bear about Happy Endings, I figured I could throw it into the headline this week. I have no way of accurately guessing whether a cable network will want to pick it up, but fans are kidding themselves if they think ABC will renew it.

In other news, Body Of Proof ratings remain woeful, but if the California tax credit saved it last season, it could save it again this season. And I'm keeping Malibu Country as a "toss up" for now, hoping to be aided by either a late season ratings surge or dive. That would get me to make a change before the end of the season and get it into the headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I came up with a new fantasy schedule for ABC:

    Sunday:
    DWTS/ Splash/ DWTS
    DWTS/ Celebrity Wife Swap/ DWTS
    Body of Proof

    Monday
DWTS Results/ The Bachelor/ DWTS Results
    Revenge/ The Bachelor/ Revenge
    Castle

    Tuesday
    Once Upon a Time
    Shield
    Big Thunder or Gothica

    Wednesday
    The Middle
    Suburgatory
    Modern Family
    New Comedy
Nashville [13 eps order to see if it improves, if not canceled at midseason]

    Thursday
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Scandal
    Doubt or Betrayal

    Friday
    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country
    Shark Tank
    20/20

    4 Moves:
    - DWTS to Sundays
    - Body of Proof to Sundays
    - Revenge to Mondays
    - Once Upon a Time to Tuesdays

This would mean totally revamp Sunday and Tuesdays and, to some extent, Mondays, but I think it could pay off big time. ABC would thrive on Tuesdays with three very compatible shows in there, OUAT decline would likely revert a bit given the stable schedule that Tuesdays can create and given the compatible shows surrounding it, DWTS decline would slow down not facing the voice and at the same time ABC would have a well performing combo on Sundays, albeit not spectacular, that would be good counter programming against all he male skewing stuff that is going on that night, not to mention ideal to work around awards season. Revenge should also benefit from a move to Mondays away from all the Sunday mess. Yes, it would have to deal with the voice, but I think it would do fine, it would be in low to mid 2s imo, and that would be ok, ABC would have a very stable night there I think. If they think a new show like Doubt or Betrayal could perform better, Revenge can take Thursdays at 10pm after Scandal with the new show on Monday, but that is riskier. It sounds like a huge schedule shake up, and in some ways it is, but it would only require the promotion of 4 moves. And DWTS/Bop move could be promoted together, while OUAT’s move could be promoted with the all new Tuesday night focused on Disney themes.

Has Nashville’s episode order been cut to 21? It shows that on Wikipedia and the reference is The Futon Critic. I’m not sure how reliable this is, but if its true it doesn’t sound good for renewal chances :(

Consiidering Malibu Country is on Fridays, I think comparing ratings for HE or The Neighbors doesn’t really apply. We know Friday ratings are generally lower. I think ABC should leave Fridays schedule alone but step up the publicity for those shows. They led in the ratings overall most of the time with very little publicity. I really hope ABC gets behind Malibu Coountry and gives it a second season.

Just to put my two cents in, this is how I would line up the deck chairs for ABC next fall:

    SUNDAY -
    7:00 THUNDER MOUNTAIN
    8:00 SHIELD
    9:00 GOTHICA
    10:00 THE RETURNED
    MONDAY -
    8:00 Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 DOUBT
    TUESDAY -
8:00 Dancing with the Stars Results Show
    9:00 Once Upon A Time
    10:00 Castle
    WEDNESDAY -
    8:00 The Middle
    8:30 Suburgatory
    9:00 Modern Family
9:30 HOME RUN (untitled Cullen Bros.)
    10:00 Revenge
    THURSDAY -
    8:00 Shark Tank
    9:00 Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 Scandal
    FRIDAY -
    8:00 America’s Funniest Videos
    8:30 The Neighbors
    9:00 Last Man Standing
    9:30 Malibu Country
    10:00 Nashville
    SATURDAY -
    8:00 College Football

    Charmed,
Nothing I’ve read indicated ABC gave Nashville a full 22 order. The press release stating a “full-season” pick-up doesn’t mention it. It’s possible ABC gave it a “back 8″ to 21 due to scheduling/budget reasons. While 22 is typical for a full-season many shows get only 20/21 ordered.

It doesn’t appear as though they got a back 9 and then ABC cut one, however. I wouldn’t worry. Ratings being what they’ve been for ABC lately I think it’s safe for season 2.

  • Josh

If I was in charge at ABC my schedule would be:

    Sunday

    8: America’s Funniest Home Videos
    9: Splash/The Bachelor/Shark Tank
    10: 20/20

    Monday

    8: DWTS/(Celebrity/Non-Celeb) Wife Swap
    9: DWTS Result/S.H.I.E.L.D.
    10: Castle

    Tuesday

    8: Last Man Standing
    8:30. Malibu Country
    9: The Neighbors
    9:30. Suburgatory
    10: Nashville

    Wednesday

    8: The Middle
    8:30. Modern Family
    9: Revenge
    10: Betrayal/Doubt

    Thursday

    8: Grey’s Anatomy
    9: Body Of Proof
    10: Scandal

    Friday

    8: Once Upon A Time
    9: OUAT Spinoff/Big Thunder
    10: Happy Endings
    10:30. New Comedy

  • Fred

Some of these schedules are totally incompetent .

  • Al

    @Just Desserts

OUAT spin-off is just 13 eps. miniseries for mid-season, it not fill airs in fall.

  • Al

I think that ABC will picks up dramas Westside, S.H.I.E.L.D., Murder in Manhattan, Betrayal, Gothica, Killer Women and OUAT spin-off. Westside, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Murder in Manhattan will in fall, other in mid-season.

  • WIlllow

I think it would be funny to post the airing dates of new Happy Endings episodes to show how screwed it was.

I know it won’t help, but I thought the show was hilarious but I could never figure out when it was on to watch.

  • Tony JJ

    My Fall 2013 Schedule.
New Shows in ( ) are obviously in the case the show turns out as good as it’s potential

    Mondays
8:00 Dancing with the Stars/The Bachelor/Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 NEW DRAMA (RECKLESS)

Let’s face it DWTS/Bachelor aren’t moving from Mondays. And a new drama should launch Mondays at 10 and Reckless sounds very intriguing and it could do great at 10pm much like Scandal.

    Tuesdays
    8:00 Dancing with the Stars
    9:00 NEW DRAMA (S.H.I.E.L.D)
    10:00 Castle

I would love to cancel DWTS: Results, but unless it completely craters this spring season, it’ll most likely be back in the fall. I would launch S.H.I.E.L.D in the 9pm slot followed by Castle.

    Wednesdays
    8:00 The Middle
8:30 NEW COMEDY (TROPHY WIFE OR MIDDLE AGED RAGE)
    9:00 Modern Family
9:30 NEW COMEDY (SUPER FUN NIGHT)
    10:00 Nashville

The Middle and Modern Family anchor the comedy block each followed by a potential comedy break out. Trophy Wife or Middle Aged Rage would follow The Middle. Super Fun Night would follow Modern Family as I think it could be a potential break out for ABC so I think it needs a post MF slot and huge promotion in the fall. Nashville gets a 13 episode second season with possible 9 episode back order.

    Thursdays
    8:00 NEW DRAMA (Big Thunder)
    9:00 Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 Scandal

Big Thunder starts the night off with a Disney family friendly hour followed by the Shonda Rhimes powerhouse duo Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Once Upon a Time did great for ABC at Sundays at 8pm death slot pre-Desperate Housewives. I would try to recreate that on Thursdays.

    Fridays
    8:00 Last Man Standing
    8:30 Malibu Country
    9:00 Shark Tank
    10:00 20/20

I would love to create a 2 hour TGIF block, but I think ABC should let this block stay stable and let it grow! But if they have some promising multi-camera comedies I would create a two hour TGIF rebirth and move Shark Tank to Tuesdays at 8 thus canceling the Dancing with the Stars Results Show.

    Sundays
    7:00 America’s Funniest Home Videos
    8:00 Once Upon a Time
    9:00 Revenge
10:00 NEW DRAMA (GOTHICA OR THE RETURNED)

Once Upon a Time and Revenge will stay in their slots with better scheduling, possible later fall start dates and less random breaks and never facing big award shows. Gothica or The Returned will round out Sunday in hope of a hit.

Suburgatory gets a 13 episode order for midseason.
Body of Proof cancelled or moved to summer if ABC can really make bank off of international sales and syndication.
Splash renewed for midseason, unless it completely drops next week.
Short seasons for Wife Swap (Celeb and Regular).
Happy Endings cancelled and moved to TBS (Sony/ABC could offer this to TBS for cheap with syndication rights) unless a friday miracle happens.

And then there will be some midseason new comedies/dramas, but don’t have time to figure out which ones I’d choose.

    Thoughts??

  • Fred

    @TonyJJ

ABC would be wise to consider your suggestions . Seriously, you make many valid points.

  • fourat sakka

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • HAPPY!

    @Tony JJ
I must say that is a pretty good schedule. The 1 thing I worry about is the drama Thursdays at 8. There are other powerhouse shows airing at the same time, so I would just put either The Taste or Splash there

  • HAPPY!

    @Fred
    I agree with you.
That is one of the better fantasy schedules i have seen, and he backs up his moves strongly.

  • NewGuy

    What ABC should do:

    MONDAY
8:00 – Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Nashville (22 episodes)

    TUESDAY
8:00 – Dancing with the Stars: Results
    9:00 – Killer Women (13-22 episodes)
    10:00 – S.H.I.E.L.D. (13-22 episodes)

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – The Middle (24 episodes)
    8:30 – Divorce A Love Story (13-22 episodes)
    9:00 – Modern Family (24 episodes)
    9:30 – Suburgatory (22 episodes)
    10:00 – The Returned (13-22 episodes)

    THURSDAY
    8:00 – Murder in Manhattan (13 episodes)
    9:00 – Grey’s Anatomy (Final Season, 24 episodes)
    10:00 – Scandal (24 episodes)

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – Last Man Standing (22 episodes)
    8:30 – Malibu Country (13 episodes) / Happy Endings (13 episodes)
    9:00 – Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20

    SUNDAY
    8:00 – Once Upon a Time (24 episodes)
    9:00 – Revenge (22 episodes)
    10:00 – Castle (22 episodes)

“Some of these schedules are totally incompetent”

Oh come on, you don’t think putting DWTS Results show after the performance show makes sense? ;)

  • Fred

    @Rob60990

Or placing ABC’s top rated sitcom , by far , at 8:30.
Or moving OUAT and yet to be confirmed spinoff to Friday.
Or shifting 20/20 to Sunday 10:00.
Or renewing every marginally rated sitcom and building a Tuesday comedy block with them .
Or renewing low rated Body of Proof and promoting it to the plum Thursday 9:00 position in between powerhouses Grey’s and Scandal.

There is more ,but I’m tired of typing such nonsensical statements .

  • Fred

Actually one can receive an inspiration or revelation from even the most absurd scenarios.
By moving MODERN FAMILY even earlier to 8:00 it could help strengthen 8:30. MIDDLE would benefit greatly there . S.H.E.I.L.D. at 9:00 followed by REVENGE at 10/00 might create a SUPER Wednesday.
However ABC would need to schedule another comedy block on Monday and/or Tuesday after DWTS/BACHELOR. They are working on so many new sitcoms for next season and will need available slots .

  • Tony JJ

    Thanks guys!

    @HAPPY!

I too think it’s risky to launch yet another drama Thursdays at 8 pm, but I think ABC will do it. They clearly aren’t stating defeat and want to find a stable performer for that slot so that’s why I chose Big Thunder as a OUAT type show as I stated.
