With nothing new in the ABC predictions this week, and plenty of people continuing to ask the cancellation bear about Happy Endings, I figured I could throw it into the headline this week. I have no way of accurately guessing whether a cable network will want to pick it up, but fans are kidding themselves if they think ABC will renew it.

In other news, Body of Proof ratings remain woeful, but if the California tax credit saved it last season, it could save it again this season. And I'm keeping Malibu Country as a "toss up" for now, hoping to be aided by either a late season ratings surge or dive. That would get me to make a change before the end of the season and get it into the headline.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Or perhaps S.H.I. E.L.D. would perform even better Thus 8:00.
BIG THUNDER might work on family friendly Sun 7:00 preceding OUAT.
The very profitable AFHV could be moved to Friday.

  • Tony JJ

I’ve thought of S.H.I.E.L.D going at Thursdays at 8 but I think ABC needs an overhaul on Tuesdays and a big buzzed show like S.H.I.E.L.D could help make Tuesdays a better night. And AFV is not leaving Sundays at 7. It does great numbers for a 20 year old show with absolutely ZERO advertising. Putting a drama at 7 pm on Sunday would be a disaster and moving ADV to Fridays would be a dumb move since they are already winning Fridays with their comedy block + Shark Tank.

    @Tony JJ,

Nice schedule in there. I still prefer mine, because I really believe that DWTS should migrate to Sundays to get away from the voice and that sundays is not the place for serialized shows like OUAT and Revenge in modern days tvland, but your schedule is also nice and it actually sounds like something ABC would do, as it doesn’t even require that many moves. I do have an issue with launching a drama out of fading DWTS though, not sure what sort of numbers we could expect, especially since NBC is bound to have a voice fueled drama airing in there.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of mine?

    DWTS/ Splash/ DWTS
    DWTS/ The Taste/ DWTS
    Body of Proof

DWTS Results/ The Bachelor/ DWTS Resuls
    Revenge/ The Bachelor/ Revenge

    Once Upon a Time
    Big Thunder

    The Middle
    Modern Family
    New Comedy
    Nashville [13 eps order]

    Grey’s Anatomy
    Doubt or Betrayal or Reckless

    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country
    Shark Tank

    @Tony JJ

The Wonderful World of Disney used to rule on Sunday 7:00.-9:00 . BIG THUNDER seems like it could fit right in that mold.
ABC may want to rebuild that franchise. The potential audience is HUGE on Sunday night. They would sometimes create a revolving wheell of family oriented programming throughout the season. So each show would have less than the standard 20+ eps thereby enabling more shows to air in the coveted slots. The strongest performers would then be granted more eps , thereby eliminiating thr weaker ones. Coincidentaly OUAT and the proposed spinoff would be perfect candidates
As for the very profitable 25 year old AFHV: by moving it to Fri 8:00 followed by the even higher rated SHARK TANK at 9:00 and of course the venerable 35 year old 20/20 at 10:00 capping off an extremely lucrative night of television .
I feel LMS and perhaps the less popular MC would do well elsewhere .
Leaving expensive scripted shows on such a low rated night doesn’t make much sense to me.
Back in the day ABC made a fortune off TGIF but today it is not. Corporate sibling Disney Channel offeres similar programming on Friday nights.

DWTS can’t move to Sunday because of Len & Bruno however I do agree it would solve ABC’s Sunday problems.

  • Tony JJ

Thanks! I like your schedule as a complete fantasy schedule though, as I don’t see it happening, but you have risky moves in DWTS, Revenge, Grey’s, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, Body of Proof.

I would love to see how DWTS, Grey’s and Scandal would do if they moved to where you suggested. But I don’t see ABC moving all of the shows that you moved all in one season. Most likely all their ratings would drop from what they’re doing now, but overall a great “fantasy” schedule.

I hope HE kicks ass this coming Friday and gives ABC a reason to renew it for season 4.

    HE is hilarious!

  • Jeff

ABC cannot move DWTS to Sundays two judges in the fall fly to the UK to judge the show there which airs saturdays and results filmed saturday night Sunday is there day to travel to LA for the US show so they wont move it from Mondays but I can see them moving Castle to allow another show to launch after it but they wont move DWTS to Sunday I can guarantee that since BBC owns both the UK and US versions

Yet another ABC 2013 fall schedule:

    BACHELOR-9:00- 2hours

I’m a huge fan of OUAT, however it is obviously no longer worthy of the time slot. Time to give a new show the chance. Bachelor should compete well against NFL and TWD.

    DWTS-8:00 2 Hours

While DWTS still has some juice left, I would love for it to help promote such a worthy drama.

    NEW SHOW- S.H.I.E.L.D.-9:00
    NEW DRAMA-10:00

I’m sure DWTS can survive w/o a low rated results show. They can incorporate results at end of the 2 hour Monday airing. OUAT might do well here and pair well with S.H.I.E.L.D. This new show should be strong enough to help a new drama get off the ground.

If new sitcoms prove to be unworthy, bring back Neighbors and Suburgatory.
I rather REVENGE here for too many obvious reasons to list. Far superior to Sunday.

CASTLE-8:00 Should improve upon past drama experiments

MALIBU COUNTRY- If ABC decides to cancel, plug in a new sitcom

I would really like ABC to go all unscripted here, but I think ABC would rather cultivate some sitcoms. Long term gains because of syndication. Unscripted are obviously more profitable short term but not common in syndication.

So 3 new 1 hour shows and 2 new 30 min shows for the fall. Can’t predict midseason until later next season.

  • Bee

WAIT. why does futoncritic say nashville is only gonna have 21 episodes this season?! please tell me that’s a mistake :( cus then another 3 week break is coming up then.

  • Hope I smith

I think this show is wonderful. It is light, silly and cute. I pray it will return
