Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.40
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.78
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.06
American Dad renewed 1.10
Glee      1.11
New Girl renewed 1.12
Bones renewed 1.16
The Simpsons renewed 1.25
Family Guy renewed 1.44
The Following renewed 1.48

Of course Touch is going to be canceled, but the cancellation bear is wringing every single weekly drop of juice from the orange that is Fox renewal and cancellation decisions at this point. The Goodwin Games, a show not yet on the schedule, was in the headline last week. Glee the week before, and probably The Cleveland Show again next week.

Boring? Of course. Avoidable? The bear doesn't see how. Your suggestions are welcome.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Next weeks headline: “Should they have renewed Alcatraz” :p

  • Ryan Schwartz

“American Idol Technically Inching Closer and Closer to the Bear”

“Given TOUCH’s Woeful Ratings, Should FOX Resurrect The Mob Doctor?”

    Haha! I kid, I kid!

  • Bill Gorman

“Next weeks headline: “Should they have renewed Alcatraz” :p”

    That’s now in the running!

  • One

Housecatraz, bitch! (I’ve been waiting for a chance to say that for awhile)

  • Dan

@Bill – I would get a Glee headline in before it gets renewed which might be soon. Is there any chance Cleveland could be downgraded within the next few weeks. Though ratings have stayed the same, a lot of time has lapsed without any signs of a renewal.

  • mike

the cleveland show is also on life support rip cleveland brown

  • Rebecca

Yeah, I’d rather have Alcatraz back than Touch. I’m caught up on Touch now but I’m ready for it to end (hopefully it ends well on May 10th). The only other Fox shows I watch are Mindy, New Girl, Raising Hope and Bob’s Burgers.

  • Michael Rae

Since everybody is renewed (except for Glee who is still in negotiation for renewal but certain and The Cleveland Show which is likely to be cancelled but sure to be cancelled which might get the Family Guy fate during its early days), Touch is the only one in which the renewal fate is not yet done. But, Touch is sure to be cancelled due to its rating. But, there is a possiblity that it might get the fate of Fringe or move to other networks like Netflix, FX or TNT.

  • Call me a hiperflop

Does it mean the Fox will cancel Glee?

  • One

Y’know, we could really ask “Should Fox have brought back [insert show here]” of several show’s they’ve canceled recently, given how deep they are now. Of course, the presumption on the parts of delusional fans is that these shows will keep getting the same ratings the next year, when very often one year’s borderliners end up the next year’s dead shows walking.

  • Tom

I don’t want to encourage fantasy schedules, much less ask for them, but at some point discussing the structure of a schedule (do they keep a four comedy block? can more episodes of The Following be prepared for Fall? if Fox only has 7 comedy pilots, what does that suggest for the schedule?) isn’t the most irresponsible use of your time.

  • Jay

Is Cleveland getting a final thirteen or not? FOX is running out of time if it is!

  • Adam

“If TOUCH gets renewed … then what the hell if the matter with FOX!”

“If it is canceled, what will fill The Cleveland Show’s slot next season?”

“Will ‘Cleveland’ be moving back to Quahog?”

“As it stands, The Goodwin Games is in a better position than TOUCH”

“First Ben & Kate and now TOUCH, FOX are really bad at scheduling (though not as bad as ABC or NBC)”

“If it was ‘The Quagmire Show’, would it have been more successful?”

“Only three shows canceled this season? Bears must really like FOXes”

  • JacobYates

    Terra Nova anybody?

  • fakeem

You should post the clip from Family Guy where Peter runs down the list of all the FOX shows that would have to be cancelled before their show would get renewed….

  • Jonny C…. formerly Jon

I love how Cleveland Show is scoring decent ratings at 8:30…maybe that shouldve been a sign to Fox that they shoudlve never moved the show to 7:30.

Then again from everyone I know maybe it’s a good thing Cleveland goes back to Quahog next season… so it’s for the best.

  • JacobYates

    Here’s a good headline.

“Was Terra Nova fed to the Bear too soon?”

  • Jonny C…. formerly Jon

“If it was ‘The Quagmire Show’, would it have been more successful?”

    I’ll answer that one…based on the 3 Quagmire-centric episodes this season…..HELL NO.

  • Dan

@jay – While Fox could give Cleveland a final 13 ep season to get it over 100 it doesn’t seem likely given the slot limitation and Murder Police set for Sundays midseason.

After May 19, all 88 eps of Cleveland show will have been aired. Fox could go the Futurama way and not officially axe the show but Seth or Mike Henry will let us know.

Touch >>>> the rest of FOX’s lineup :(
The whole Nielsen system is flawed. There’s no way one Nielsen household accurately represents a thousand viewers.
