Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.40
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.78
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.06
American Dad renewed 1.10
Glee      1.11
New Girl renewed 1.12
Bones renewed 1.16
The Simpsons renewed 1.25
Family Guy renewed 1.44
The Following renewed 1.48

Of course Touch is going to be canceled, but the cancellation bear is wringing every single weekly drop of juice from the orange that is Fox renewal and cancellation decisions at this point. The Goodwin Games, a show not yet on the schedule, was in the headline last week. Glee the week before, and probably The Cleveland Show again next week.

Boring? Of course. Avoidable? The bear doesn't see how. Your suggestions are welcome.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The Following then replaces the worst performing hour Monday-Thursday, with said hour either being canceled or sent to Fridays.

If Glee is renewed next season will definitely be its last. I can’t see it going for more than another season.

  • Cammie

@Jacob Glee is going to live forever….

  • Roy

Move the show –then again just kiss off Fox

    The Old Man Is Snoring

  • Jonay

Fox should Try comedy Mondays which is what they are trying durring the summer

  • wes

Maybe we can name the cancellation bear for the Cleveland show Tim. I think The Cleveland Show is de facto cancelled. They burnt off two new episodes Sunday night and a new episode the week before when every other show was a re-run.

  • Dave

    Headline, “Should Fox be renewed”?

  • pete5125

Touch could get a 13 episode renewal just to have Keither stuck for another season and in a position that none of the other nets could use him for at least another season

  • Randy

For Touch, this season is so much better than it was last year. Most people probably never turned it on this year because the show was getting worse and worse with each episode last year. Last year the stories changed so much (and were harder to follow), & you would have to read all this stupid text on the screen because no one spoke english. This year to me, it’s totally different. Too bad, this season wasn’t the 1st season of Touch, or they would have more a hit of a show. Oh, well. I hope Fox shows all the episodes; and than fine, let it be cancelled. Even if they have to put it on a Saturday and burn them out, I would be happy with that.

@catsrule: And there is no way 25,000 Nielsen viewers represents millions of US residents. Everyone has unique tastes.

I agree with that statement. Also, from what I’ve been seeing about Nielsen families is that they don’t get a lot of money which to me means that they are really, really into tv. Also, a lot of them might be poor (Do anything because they at least get something).

I really like tv, but I wouldn’t waste my time for some company to take my ratings off of the tv, and write it in journeys, and only get $1-$10 a MONTH.

Just by researching, I could see why their aren’t a lot of senior types of shows on. Do you really think seniors are doing this type of stuff? I doubt many are.

  • were123

I think a good headlines could be: “Glee will be renewed, but will be its next season the last one?, “Mcfarlane or not, Cleveland is still a likely gonner” or “Not even the rating falls from X Factor nor American Idol will save your shows”

  • Jeffty

@catsrule: And there is no way 25,000 Nielsen viewers represents millions of US residents. Everyone has unique tastes.

Yes they do, and no they don’t, in that order.

It’s called “random sampling” and it’s pretty much down to a science. You can get an excellent idea of the general tastes of the nation from a very small, representative sample. National advertisers have bought into the methodology for 50+ years. The payment to Nielsen families is irrelevent, it’s a token. Everyone may have “unique tastes” but there are only five (major) advertising-supported national broadcast networks, and they can’t make much money selling commercials on shows nobody watches.

@JacobYates – those final 2 episodes were either not produced or will air as part of next season.

  • dralanforce

@Jonny C… Formerly jon – I agree with you, the Quagmire-Centric episodes are so damn Lame…i didn’t laugh in those episodes

  • dralanforce

@brody – and the next after that: “Breaking in, Canceled for three time”

  • dralanforce

I really hope a miracle for Touch, i love the second season, it is way better than the first one :/

  • The End

    @Jane Elliot

There isn’t 25,000 Nielsen households in America, the number is closer to 20,000. And I too aren’t a fan of the Nielsen system and find it to be outdated, but there’s nothing better out there.

Terra Nova wasn’t fed to the cancelation bear too soon, it was the most expensive show on TV at the time. Though I too was sad to see the show go, it would of been sheer insanity to renew the show based on the numbers it received, there’s no way to guarantee that people will stick around for another season.

Pick a random show on TV at the moment, and I can pretty much guarantee that Terra Nova was more expensive.

  • The End

@Also, from what I’ve been seeing about Nielsen families is that they don’t get a lot of money which to me means that they are really, really into tv.

If you think all Nielsen families sit on their behinds on the sofa all day watching TV you are incorrect on almost every imaginable level.

Nielsen families have jobs too, there’s nothing to say you can’t work and sit yourself infront of a TV at say 8/9pm to watch your fav show.
