Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.40
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show   0.78
Raising Hope renewed 0.81
The Mindy Project renewed 0.84
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.06
American Dad renewed 1.10
Glee      1.11
New Girl renewed 1.12
Bones renewed 1.16
The Simpsons renewed 1.25
Family Guy renewed 1.44
The Following renewed 1.48

Of course Touch is going to be canceled, but the cancellation bear is wringing every single weekly drop of juice from the orange that is Fox renewal and cancellation decisions at this point. The Goodwin Games, a show not yet on the schedule, was in the headline last week. Glee the week before, and probably The Cleveland Show again next week.

Boring? Of course. Avoidable? The bear doesn't see how. Your suggestions are welcome.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I actually liked Touch! It was just way to repetitive, and really should have been a 12 part season instead of a 24 part one since it really burned itself out. I also think it should have just stopped after 1 season, because since there was really not much room to leave, it really just bored me after a while. It was still one of my favorite shows while it was fresh!

@wes: I think The Cleveland Show is de facto cancelled. They burnt off two new episodes Sunday night and a new episode the week before when every other show was a re-run.

I think the Cleveland Show pretty much is unofficially cancelled. Even with a better timeslot it’s not really performing *better* than any of the Animation Domination – unless Murder Police ends up disappointing creatively behind the scene it’s as good as done.

Bob’s Burgers will probably not be in the danger of cancellation until it gets to 88 episodes (it’s already in it’s third production cycle).

  • The End

    @Bones (22 Episodes,Final season)

The next season of Bones hasn’t been confirmed to be the final. Fox simply renewed the show as usual with no indication that Season 9 will be the last.

  • Charmed

@Hanna You must be crazy if you think Glee will be ending next year.

  • tomko44

After the changes they made to Touch from season I can understand the horrible ratings. They took a mostly positive storyline and made it depressing!

  • Sarah

    “Bones (22 Episodes,Final season)”

I’m pretty sure there will be 24 episodes next season, especially since they’re holding 2 back from this season and filming them after they finish this season before they break for the summer. But I could be wrong.

    @The End

“The next season of Bones hasn’t been confirmed to be the final. Fox simply renewed the show as usual with no indication that Season 9 will be the last.”

True, but look at what happened to House last season. Plus, we don’t know if David and Emily agreed to come back for 1 or 2 more seasons earlier this season. It also depends on what day the show gets put on. If it gets stuck on Fridays, they might as well say it’s the final season from the beginning. But if it’s back on Mondays, it’ll have a chance for a 10th season. That’s all JMPO though.

  • The End

While I agree that the performance of Season 9 will determine if the show gets a 10th season, there’s nothing to say David and Emily won’t come back for another season. Certainly they won’t have anything else that pays as well as Bones does to join immediately afterwards.

Like with any long running show, I can see them sticking with it till it either is ended, or canceled.

I personally think Season 10 will be the last for the show and I think the show will get this far too.

  • JacobYates

    @The End

The ratings for Terra Nova were not terrible and Kevin Reilly even stated that it was profitable, despite the monstrous budget.

  • JacobYates

That’s why the headline would be good. Plus FOX renewed Touch while it was still performing well and Terra Nova was off the air. If Terra Nova wasn’t cancelled in March and was still a renewal candidate in May, Touch would have been cancelled.

  • The End

@The ratings for Terra Nova were not terrible

Yes they were, with the kind of budget the show had, the numbers received were pretty dire. 7.2 million for the finale, 2.2 18-49 said it all.

You do realize that if the show was renewed, the budget would naturally be increased. It wouldn’t of been possible to create a second season with a lower budget either.

@Kevin Reilly even stated that it was profitable,

Which in the long run means nothing.

@Plus FOX renewed Touch while it was still performing well

Touch was renewed because they wanted Kiefer Sutherland on the air, nothing more or less.

@If Terra Nova wasn’t cancelled in March and was still a renewal candidate in May

Should of’s, would of’s, if onlys. Terra Nova was never going to be renewed by Fox, and Touch was always going to come back for a second season at the time. Nothing would of changed that.

  • JacobYates

    @The End
What you’re saying makes some sense. They wanted Kiefer on the air and I get that, I loved 24. How does the show being profitable mean nothing?

And you’re telling me, that if given the choice between Touch, which hit a new series low each of the 3 weeks preceding the finale, which scored a 1.3, and Terra Nova which was stable and profitable, despite hitting a 2.2 for the finale, FOX would go with Touch because they like Kiefer?

I imagine Touch would be expensive with Kiefer on the cast as well. Some of your points make sense, but your argument is weak.

  • Jon

Touch on the surface seemed like a good concept, but unfortunately it lost me as a viwer 8 0r 9 episodes into season 1. The shows were just often so confusing, and the whole idea of writing these numbers repetatively each week just got old. They just did a terrible job trying to make the whole concept seem believeable. Also after awhile the kid just got so darn annoying. I haven’t tuned in yet this year, and from the looks of things I guess millions of other people aren’t bothering with it either.

  • bukkie

Please cancel Touch already. I hate that kid!!

  • Xerophytes

Fox moved Fringe from successful Tuesday to Thursday 9pm. Then moved it to Friday.

Touch moved to Thursday, 9pm. Then now moved to Friday.

Since Fox’s Friday 9pm night is empty… guess what will Fox do?

Of course, move whatever on Thursday 9pm to Friday. And that is Glee.

  • Feedback

You’re always so obsessed with these headlines. Why not just write “ABC Renewal/Cancellation Index for Week ____” and be done with it. I don’t think the specific headline of “Touch is getting canceled” is attracting more readers. Just leave it in blank.

    It’s Google-bait.
