ABC Family Orders a Third Season of Hit Original Comedy Series “Baby Daddy”

Burbank, CA (March 22, 2013) – ABC Family today announced the network has green-lit a third season of its hit original comedy series, “Baby Daddy.” The order came just as production wrapped on the second season of the series, which premieres on ABC Family, Wednesday, May 29, from 8:30-9:00 p.m., ET/PT, after an all-new episode of comedy “Melissa & Joey.”

“Baby Daddy” premiered to ratings success in its first season as the #1 new cable comedy of Summer 2012 in key female demos, winning its time period across ABC Family’s core Adult 18-34, Adult 18-49 and Millennial demos. Together with “Melissa & Joey,” “Baby Daddy” has made ABC Family summer’s cable comedy destination on Wednesday nights. The series stars Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Derek Theler, Tahj Mowry, with Melissa Peterman and Chelsea Kane. “Baby Daddy” is created and executive-produced by Dan Berendsen (“The Nine Lives Of Chloe King,” “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “Hannah Montana: The Movie”). The multi-camera comedy shoots in front of a live studio audience in Los Angeles.

“’Baby Daddy’ was an immediate success when it launched. Based on the creative strength we saw during production on Season Two, and how the episodes, storylines and characters are developing, we decided to double down on this hit show and keep it in production for additional episodes,” said Michael Riley, president, ABC Family. “We have a great deal of faith that our brilliant creative team and wonderful cast will continue to warm our hearts and make us laugh each week.”

“Baby Daddy,” the #1 comedy series in ABC Family history, follows Ben (Bilodeau), a young man in his early 20s living the life of a bachelor as a bartender in New York City with his buddy, Tucker (Mowry), and his brother, Danny (Theler), a professional hockey player. Their lives are turned upside down when they come home one day to find a baby girl left on the doorstep by an ex-girlfriend of Ben’s. After much deliberation, Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his friends and his protective and sometimes over-bearing mother, Bonnie (Peterman), and his close female friend, Riley (Kane), who has had a secret crush on him since childhood. Riley is hopeful that Ben will finally take notice, but she doesn’t realize that Ben’s brother, Danny, is harboring a secret crush on her.

  • Brian

    Great news I love this show.

  • Greg

    This is weird. What if the show returns significantly lower?

  • DM

    Probably should have at least waited until season 2 aired

  • Glue

    Shouldn’t they have waited for season 2 to air?
    Seems like they don’t have much faith in some shows.

  • RJ

    Smart move. The show did very well for its first season and will likely continue to do well. Even if it falls, the show is dirt cheap compared to their dramas.

  • Dan

    Very surprising but it looks like ABC Family wants to stick with this one, the only successful comedy they have had was Melissa & Joey and it seems that they dont want to lose this one. They should have waited until it aired 1 or 2 episodes but it seems that the show will last a while. ABC Family has had 1 season wonders like 10 Things I Hate About You, Ruby & the Rockits and State of Georgia.

  • Dillan

    I’m hoping this means we’ll here about TLG soon.

  • RyanCanada

    i better hear and Melissa and Joey renewal

  • Tony JJ

    This is really wierd. Expected but not until season 2 started. But either way I’m glad about this cuz I love the show. There has a to be a reason why they announced it so early. Maybe they plan on airing it in the fall or in January? There’s gotta be a reason why they want production of season 3 to start so soon.

  • Jenny

    They are really stringing TLG and Buneheads fans along. Season two hasn’t even aired yet and it’s already renewed for season three?

  • Jenny

    @Tony JJ

    That’s what I figured as well. Maybe they are going to try for a winter run? Fall would maybe be too soon since season two will likely be ending over the summer.

  • Martin

    What about melissa and joey, hope to hear something about that soon too.

  • Michael

    I mean this in the best way, but Melissa Joan Hart is fertile! Lol, they probably don’t want to renew it so early.

  • Ashton Butcher

    The show did very well in its first season so smart move on their part I think its safe to say that this would be the one comedy to get into knowing its not going to be cancelled anytime soon.

    I think the comedy renewals are totally separate from the dramas so nobody should be really bringing up the dramas right now, those are separate decisions.

  • Nikki

    when will we hear about huntress and the lying game?

  • Sel

    Why didn’t they just ordered full 24 episodes second season?

  • Holly

    @Sel,

    Cable shows rarely get 22 episodes. The norm for them is 12-18.

  • bernadette

    How many Episode are there in season 2 ??

  • Jenny

    @Sel

    Melissa & Joey got a 30 episode first season, so ABC Family could order a full 24 episode second season they just don’t want to I guess.

  • Ram510

    YES!!!! Baby Daddy and Melissa & Joey are my favorite summer sitcoms.

    Question, in the picture above who is the guy in te sweater? I don’t remember him from season 1.

    And why don’t they just renew Melissa & Joey with it? And will this 3rd season of Baby Daddy come sooner than June 2014
