do you wanna talk to the most boring character on the show? well, now’s your chance!

Great episode, and I’m glad we’re seeing more episodes centering on the supporting cast. Ratings seem pretty stable, too, so this appears to have been a crowd-pleaser.

Merrranga’s got a point that Ryan, like the other Castle supporting characters, is almost entirely expository. Esposito’s background in the military and a few prior Espo-centric episodes have given him an interesting back-story. Lanie is on paper the most boring of all, but she’s written to be so saucy and sassy that she’s a pleasure to watch anyway. Ryan’s stable, white-bread family man (nicknamed “Honeymilk”) needed a retcon, and this episode provided it. Merrranga’s post came before the ep aired, and I think quality of the performance, not to mention the ratings, prove that a Ryan episode really can carry the show.

With a Season 6 all but assured, they couldn’t keep the focus entirely on Nathan and Stana and still remain fresh. Other than breaking Castle and Beckett up, the only way to do that is moving the conflict to the supporting characters.

I’m impressed with Julianna Dever, incidentally. She smacked of nepotism when she was first cast, but she’s a proved to be a good catch not just for Seamus but for Andrew Marlowe.
