Currently in its seventh season, Rules of Engagement will have aired 100 episodes by the end May, 2013. Has time finally run out on it?

There's lots of chatter about different members of the cast signing on for parts in new pilots. Doesn't that mean the show will be canceled? Not necessarily. Those parts are second position, if Rules gets renewed the cast members will be back.

Far more concerning for fans should be CBS' schedule restrictions. Unless CBS increases the time in its primetime schedule for sitcoms, there's likely no room left for Rules. Could it be renewed again and held for 13 episodes in the spring like this season? Maybe. But that's a stretch. Sadly, the cancellation bear has no ability to guess accurately whether CBS will expand its sitcom time.

The cancellation bear is keeping the show as a "toss up" until the last possible minute, cynically hoping that events will bail him out and he won't have to make a guess. But guess he will if necessary!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Yeah, I know. But I still think it could be moved very successfully to Wednesdays at 8. It has no drama competition at all there and to be honest, I think its audience stands on its own, I am not sure how much crossover it gets from Two and a Half Men, considering it is pretty much steady with the audience it had last year when it had Rules/Rob as lead-ins. I think the show is not lead-in dependent. Not to mention it would not face sport events during fall… I think it would be more than fine there… And if Criminal Minds moved up to 10, the 9pm slot could still be used for intelligence.

I agree. I think wednesday with no big sports(NFL games, NBA etc.) is even better option for PoI but doubt that CBS are ready to take risk with thursday line up. Its their best day now and very important day. Hollywood stdios spend big $ on that day. And ALL new comedies flop after TBBT. Last thing CBS want is one more Rob, how to be gentelmen ot Partners on thursdays. Two more new shows mean too big risk for concervetive network as CBS.

  • Petar Ivanov

No one show can be 27 or 29 episodes. 22-24 is what work in USA.

  • omabin

I think it is possible for a show to work after TBBT. It is just that the shows they’ve put there were not good shows. I see a show like Mom working there. But I agree with you that the schedule shake up that it would require for CBS to move POI to Wednesdays at 8 is too much for CBS and it wont happen. I was just saying what I thought it should happen.

I love how you guys have totally ignored the fact that you were saying either “Mentalist” or “Good Wife” would be canceled this season. How’d that turn out?

  • omabin

    @Amy A.

You are wrong. Everyone here said one out of CSI NY, The Mentalist and TGW would be canceled. CSI NY is now almost certain to be canceled, so everyone was right in those regards.

  • Petar Ivanov

Larry Bryggman (AS THE WORLD TURNS) and Traci Thoms are guest stars in PoI april 4 episode named “Trojan Horse”: The POI team must figure out if a tech exec is a friend or foe to her own company.

I love how you guys have totally ignored the fact that you were saying either “Mentalist” or “Good Wife” would be canceled this season.

They never said that. The prediction was that CBS would cancel one of CSI NY, The Mentalist and The Good Wife (and possibly a second if they cut back on drama hours).

    You have terrible reading comprehension.

  • Ele

Do you think there will me a new season of criminal Minds if Thomas Gibson does not sign?

  • Jon

I predict CBS cancells CSI NY, The Golden Boy, Rules of Engagement and as much as it pains me Vegas. Although I am interested to see if Vegas can pull similar friday numbers to Blue Bloods. Given CBS recent track record for debuting new shows in the early friday time slots, one has to think if Vegas can pull descent ratings the next six weeks they might just leave it there if they feel none of the new pilots can do better.

  • Jon

@omabin…..I see no reason NCIS Red doesn’t get picked up. Based on the track record of the franchise it seems like a no brainer.

  • CBSviewer

    @ ProViewerShipNumbers

Worst Schedule ever for many reasons:
    – There is NO chances CBS orders more than 25 episodes for a Show (especially for TGW).
    – Vegas and Golden Boy will be canceled.
    – The Good Wife won’t return to a weeknight. It will remain on Sunday until the end.
    – NCIS: Red and Blue Bloods on Sunday is stupid because Blue Bloods is Friday #1 Show on CBS and NCIS: Red will not be sacrified on Sunday.
    – Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods need a full season for syndication.
    – CBS won’t premiere 5 Comedies in the fall (because CBS will not expand its comedy time next season).

The Good Wife [solid A] is, without a doubt, the only series worth watching on broadcast tv. It is superior to the already awesome Person of Interest [B plus]. It has proven that it deserves a high production count, 29 episodes, and a prime timeslot after the monster hit NCIS. What makes you so sure of The Good Wife not returning to weeknights? Why are you people jumping for glee over Sundays being the new Friday?

Vegas has a chance of being renewed with a sizeable audience, so I shipped it to Saturday at 10pm where it can become a modern day Walker, Texas Ranger [F minus; an attrocious series] or The District [solid B].

Blue Bloods on Sundays is a smart, strategic move that will pay off in the future. With its unworthy high ratings [a woefully “blah” show], it should not air on Fridays. Blue Bloods & Hawaii Five O [another “blah” series] will produce the minimum requirement for syndication, 100 episodes.

To shake things up and to be bold, CBS needs much more comedies. They can rule the airwaves with more comedies that actually make critics laugh, unlike The Big Bang Theory.

  • Michael

Why don’t you people give shows a chance anymore? I assume that all of you people rather prefer comedies, and reality shows? That in my opinion is one of America’s many problems.

  • Michael

Jon CBS will make room for new shows then cancel them, after a few episodes like most tv networks enjoys doing today. Its either the TV stations choice, bad ratings( reality show lovers) Or it was too expensive to produce. Thats what I think.

TV networks have always done that.

i cant believe criminal minds hasnt been renewed yet its unbelievable last season was a bit dire but this season has been one of the best so far it has to be renewed

  • Ultima

i cant believe criminal minds hasnt been renewed yet its unbelievable

It’s unbelievable that some shows need more time for contract negotiations than others?

  • Dan

My guess is that with Golden Boy, Vegas, and CSI NY being cancelled, CBS wil likely hold Undercover Boss until midseason (Or maybe between survivor cycles if all shows do well) With Unforgettable airing into fall, they could premiere one of their new dramas around November.

With the remaining renewals and cancellations easy to figure out the only real question is will CBS expand their comedies on Thursday to 2 hours. The answer is Maybe.

  • Ellen

    Yep, struggles.

Are you really saying CBS has no reason to worry about the recent dramatic decline for the Monday lineup?
