Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the cancellation bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    To paraphrase:
‘Beauty and the Beast remains a toss-up this week. Better than the alternative of being downgraded, but not enough to make the Beastie population happy.’

    Hang in there BATB!

  • halloween

    -1000% chance Cult renewed
    20% chance TCD renewed
    55% chance BatB renewed
    75% chance Nikita is renewed

    all deserved to be canceled

  • Jared

BatB will get the renewal. TCD and Cult will get cancelled.

  • elle#batb

When you look at the ratings this is beyond ridiculous but we Beasties will keep fighting. #BATB!

the CW would only have 5 hours of “veteran” scripted shows for next Fall, and they’ve never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast’s friend.

There’s a first time for everything. If beauty and the beast can’t handle the post TVD slot it WILL be cancelled along with Carrie Diaries and Cult. HOD will get a renewal because of the tough Tuesday slot. Nikita will get a fourth and final season renewal for syndication purposes.

  • Beauty&theFlop

B&TB has as much chance of being renewed as Planet Earth has of world peace.

Wake up & smell the coffee you delusionoids!

I feel horrible for saying this as I watch majority of these shows, but I wish The CW would just clean house with the shows they haven’t renewed.
Aside from that, The CW is not really in any state to cancel 3 more shows, let alone launch 5 more shows after. They’ve had an alright year due to Arrow and rise of Supernatural, but cutting loose too much would just be bad.
Renew HoD and BatB for a 3rd and 2nd season, while giving Nikita a 21-episode renewal of season 4 in hopes it gets picked up for Syndication. IF not, then pull a Fox and renew it for 12 episodes (a la Fringe) in hopes that a season 5 of 12 episodes will help it reach that additional magic number.

I still think TCD has a better shot that BatB. The difference between TVD and BatB is 1.01. They lose more viewers than the average CW show has. That spells doom. Can anyone think of another show that did that and survived?

Unless the local programing at 7:30 is better than the average programing on the CW, TCD is doing relatively better. If the local programing at 7:30 is better than the average programing on the CW, then the entire network should fold.

I still think the most likely outcome is both shows being canceled, but TCD isn’t not worse off than BatB.

  • TSC’s Revenge

LOL, other than the top three shows that CW has already renewed, the rest of the CW schedule is a stinking pile of @#$%! :D Enjoy figuring out what to cut next CW!! At this rate I don’t see how CW can make it much further as a network! What to do… what to do???

  • PurpleDrazi

As someone who doesn’t currently watch anything on the CW I will say that many of their pilots for next fall sound interesting. I realize there is a long way between a short paragraph description of a show and it’s actuall execution but the fact that I am actually interested in tuning in to the channel for the first time in four years to check some of them out should mean something.

Take a chance CW. Clean house and see what happens!

    8:00-9:00 PM HART OF DIXIE
    9:00-10:00 PM THE SELECTION

    8:00-9:00 PM ARROW
    9:00-10:00 PM SUPERNATURAL

    9:00-10:00 PM THE ORIGINALS

    8:00-9:00 PM NIKITA
9:00-10:00 PM BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

With so little going into next season, I think Top Model will come with 6/7 episodes in the fall again.

Wednesdays are their only overall hit night so they shouldn’t be moved.

Beauty and the Beast will be renewed whether The CW wants it to be or not. If Les Moonves is making money from it, he’ll keep it.

I’m rooting for HoD so happy to see it’s still in a good position. And à la Nikita, if it gets renewed for a third season, the fourth season won’t be far behind, to appease the Gods of Syndication.

It’s good Supernatural is a lock on the CW, because Space cancelled it mid-season here in Canada. I gather the ratings slipped in the first half of season 8, but it’s too bad they didn’t give it a chance to rebound once the fans unhappy with the first half were happy again once things turned around mid-season.

Space aired Supernatural five days after the CW and CHCH, a channel available in some regions of Canada. So the die-hard fans would’ve already watched it before it was broadcast on Space, leaving their ratings more vulnerable as less passionate viewers are more likely to tune out if they don’t like the way things are going. It sucks Space suddenly and unceremoniously dropped it mid-season after 7 and a half years. A lot of people here don’t have access to the CW or CHCH.

  • Wright

Space sounds like a stupid network. Sorry for your loss!!!

  • poweranimals

I don’t understand the hesitence towards BATB. It’s not doing much worse than HOD. It seems to me that the CW would be stupid to cancel it given all the other axes that are falling this season.

    The Hundred
    The Tomorrow People

I love “The Carrie Diaries”! The acting is superb! The writing excellent! I am particularly impressed with the development of the young handsome man and his dealing with his sexuality. The actress who portrays the young Carrie Bradshaw is delightfully adorable! I am hoping the CW sticks with it another year in order to give the show a proper chance of being the hit it is destine to be.

  • Angellica .T.

They should really renew the Secret Circle for more seasons it would be the smart thing to do not to mention the right thing to do

  • halloween

@Angellica .T its too late, cw possibly made the wrong decision cancelling it too early…but no chance if ever comes back in any form…go petition for a movie somewhere

  • Bizarro

When has a freshman CW show been renewed when it shoots in NY where production is high (Ringer), gets stable at .4’s (Ringer and Emily Owens), goes under a million (Hellcats), internationally only airs in Canada (The CW is not making a profit out of it really) and to top it all off ends before May (Ringer)! I didn’t want to see the signs last year with Ringer but I see the signs with TCD and believe that B&TB is ahead just for that reason BUT since it airs after TVD it deserves to be cancelled. I would not be surprised if Beauty was cancelled but I would be surprised if TCD was renewed!
