Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the Cancellation Bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I wonder how severe a financial kicking the CW has taken on its failed first year shows. Carrie, Cult and EOMD were DOA. That couldn’t have been cheap. The suits also threw away 22 episodes of last season’s The Secret Circle without so much as issuing a DVD. Even “Life Unexpected” got a DVD. Arrow represents the the CW’s only recent success. In light of this situation, quibbling about keeping a marginal show like B&B on the air is making increasingly less sense.

The CW/WB joint venture is more than a production entity. It’s supposed to be building a network. That’s where the real money is generated. Building a network requires a long term strategy for developing a nucleus of top rated shows that will project a positive image of the network. In contrast, discussions about B&B’s foreign sales are a useless digression. That sort of thinking is only useful as part of a short term strategy for exploiting a show that will never yield significant domestic ratings. Besides, the CW is already apparently committed to the short term objective of bringing HOD and Nikita to syndication. That means one-fifth of its weekly primetime schedule is already being dragged down by low rated programs. The CW clearly doesn’t need to add B&B to the mix.

In order to succeed, the CW will have to maximize the number of slots in its primetime schedule that are available for airing new shows. One reason for this is that the network will eventually have to replace aging shows like TVD and SPN. Another reason is that the CW’s unenviable record of success record with new shows makes it advisable to premiere as much new content as possible in hopes that something will stick. Under this scenario, the CW should bring back no more that its top three shows, HOD, Nikita and ANTM. The other four slots should be reserved for new programming. Although B&B seems to rank high on the social engagement scale, I have yet to discover any particularly outstanding benefits the CW would reap from producing another 22 episodes of B&B, especially considering the current sad state condition of the network’s ratings. It’s time for the CW to throw in the towel on this production.

I haven’t really watched TCD, I’m just going by the numbers, but would it be too crazy for TCD to be The CW’s standing back-up show? Something’s going to be cancelled each fall, so why give it a full season pick-up and just give it a 12 episode stint as filler in a trial run for season 2. Didn’t NBC do something like that with Whitney? And now it actually has some pretty good odds! They need at least one, considering how many new shows they’re hoping to pick up this fall. The CW needs to learn the value of the half-season replacement show.

    @Kavyn

I’m beginning to believe that Angellica is just trolling.

“I have yet to discover any particularly outstanding benefits the CW would reap from producing another 22 episodes of B&B”

Wow. What a tremendous surprise coming from you Tom! I was expecting a completely different opinion from you. [rolleyes]

  • Goku

@Paul – Yeah, and AnnaSophia Robb is probably the best actress CW has ever had. But it will get cancelled anyway :/.

  • Fay

I fail to understand why you guys will not give Beauty and the Beast a break here. It is the best new show the CW has. Did it not win the People’s Choice Award for Favourite New Drama? And did it not win four … count them, that’s 4 … Spoiler TV Awards: Favourite New Drama, Favourite Network Drama, Favourite Drama Actor and Favoutire Drama Actress! It’s about time someone realized this show has great potential. Not to mention being seen in many countries around the world is bring in lots of revenue!

THE CARRIE DIARIES HAS TO LIVE ON!!!!

  • Jason50

@Angelica- Did you just find out TSC was cancelled? Sorry to say but it’s been almost a year since it was cancelled. Some of the actors are already involved in other projects. The good looking bad girl of the series is now on the Vampire Diaries, soon to be the Originals. I wasn’t really a fan of the series but it did set it up for an enjoyable season 2, and tbh I do think it was a better series than at least three of the new shows I watched this year. I won’t say CW dropped the ball on renewing TSC but they never really took a step forward either.
