Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the cancellation bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think CW will make a huge mistake if it cancels Beauty and the Beast. This show has all the makings of a cult classic and has a very faithful fan base. But the problem is that most of the fans are girls and women. TV producers won’t take a chance on a “chick” show, but I bet if this were a show about a tough guy with a gorgeous girlfriend that he saves every week and in the process lots of dead bodies on the ground, they would have renewed it by now.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Bill: “they’ve never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6.”

Get ready for a trend breaker…

I predict the CW is going cancel four of its five new shows – EO, Cult, TCD, and BATB. That would be eighty percent of their new shows canceled – and they’ve done 85% before.

They can’t afford to care whether it’s five or six hours to be left standing. They can’t afford to keep renewing shows as low-rated as TCD or BATB on the excuse that their overall season average has dropped another 50% or whatever. Based on that, soon they’ll be renewing shows with a .1 season average because their network average will be 0.0.

They have no choice but to clean house and push new pilots every season until they’ve fixed their remaining two bad nights – Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week works for them – at least until TVD and Supernatural start to close down. And since they need to come up with long-running replacements for TVD and Supernatural, that just contributes to the need to start pushing pilots, regardless of the failure rate.

Isnt’t it odd? Last year you were predicting TSC was gonna get renewed over HOD because had better ratings, and after all they canceled it. This year, BATB is having more or less the same ratings and retention that TSC had last year, but you are predicting HOD will get renewed having worst ratings. OK this just shows me that when it comes to the CW you guys cant really tell, since this network is not really like the other big networks, they based their decisions on renewal on many factors, ratings, retention yes, but also profitability, international sales, internet deals, sindications etc. thats why TSC, Ringer, EO got canceled. I just like to come here and see how biased some of the posters in here are. Most of you guys couldnt care less of the quality, the dialogue, the writing, the acting, the poor chemistry of the leads Arrow has but since their ratings are high NOBODY says anything…and lets not talk about other shows, but hey every single show is loved by their fans and deserves a shot!

So yes, Im a beastie and we want a Second Season!

  • Immaculate

Wow. Hack is here again too with a fresh new perspective. Thanks bro! I almost forgot about it and needed a reminder like I did the last six hundred times you repeated the same gibber jabber.

  • C.S.Strowbridge

What evidence do you have that TCD costs more to make than BatB?

  • Claudia

    @Immaculate you nailed it :)

    @Gisela Exactly my thoughts!

  • Bill Gorman

“I’m beginning to believe that Angellica is just trolling.”

    Ya think?

  • Jason50

@RSH- Yep, just what I’ve been thinking the past few weeks.

Arrow proves that the network can get a higher average on its new shows. They need to take more chances and find those type of shows that will get those numbers. I know easier said than done but CW is owned by CBS and WB, big names in the industry. I’m sure they can find creators and writers to put out a better product than the network is now. Next year I’m thinking at least five new series will be on CW’s lineup maybe more depending on what they do mid season and summer.

  • Win

Gah you bath fans get butthurt! If you don’t like what hack says refute it with fact…oh wait you can’t! And please don’t drag HoD into this horse race beasties. HoD is in its second season is about equal to in live + sd And killing batb in live+7 so if it has horrible ratings doesn’t that mean your shows rating suck/really suck? HoD has proven it can perform somewhat modest minus the lead/in you guys repeatedly say didn’t matter. I beg to differ because you can’t prove otherwise.

  • platypus Perry

    @Jamie yOu regarding your schedule…

That schedule for Monday and Tuesday Nights are horrible!!!

Hart of dixie has a loyal audience however it needs to move to 9:00 whether it be on tues or friday nights. A lot of people say tuesdays are super conpetetive and they’re not. When voice comes on it will be. Hod had the easiest night of the week. Fox conedies flopped, nbc w/o voice failed, abc did horrible, cbs did great in viewers and demo was good but cw needs to rebuild tuesday and monday nights with new tv shows!!! No more Low rated rated lead In Shows

  • Dan

Carrie Diaries has dropped to the point where it is likely to be cancelled and with only 2 weeks left, it doesnt have long to prove itself.

Even if TCD gets cancelled, I still cant see Beauty and the Beast getting renewed, its retention is really bad out of TVD, especially when Nikita is getting the same numbers on Fridays. Its possible CW could renew BATB and move it to another night but I just cant see it.

    All I can say for sure is that Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Hart of Dixie and Nikita will be on the fall schedule. As for BATB and TCD the best I can say is that its more likely CW will renew one, but they could cancel both, but they wont renew bot;

  • Tom

Nice to see that you’re still rocking that case of ADHD. B&B has yet to air episodes 17 – 22. Last season, TSC episodes 15 – 17 all scored 0.7 and had audiences in the 160-170 MM range. So, sweetheart, at this time last season it still made sense to predict that TSC would be renewed. BTW, this particular scenario has been recounted here numerous times, so you should have been aware that your statement was, as usual, dead wrong.

Furthermore, as of episode 16, B&B has averaged 0.63 in the demo with 1.71 MM viewers. In contrast, TSC had a 0.84 in the demo with 2.03 million through the same number of episodes. So, your comment that BATB is having more or less the same ratings and retention that TSC had last year is also dead wrong. At least you’re consistent.

HOD and Nikita are likely to be renewed because they’re being prepared for syndication. As has also been discussed here frequently, syndication is a factor that frequently trumps ratings.

As for bias, you’re about as transparent as any Beastling whose ever stumbled onto this site. Suggesting that Arrow is inferior to B&B notwithstanding its vastly superior ratings reeks of desperation. So, do us all a favor and move to another site that more conducive to letting you express your infatuation with the Beast.

  • Claudia

LOL I do have an infatuation with the Beast, that I will agree with you, but I do know that it has its flaws like any other show in the CW, and as much as you debate about the quality of the CW shows, you cant never compared them with other network shows and Arrow is included, I know, watch it. Hope you also agree with me that you really hate BATB and you will never be partial or give a positive comment about this show because you really hate it. Thats basically my point! :)

  • Richard Steven Hack

    Win and Tom: This. :-)

That short post make everyone happy? :-)

  • Bizarro

As I was browsing, I’ve seen that TSC fell in its last five eps going from 1.72 to 1.33 and falling yet again. B&TB is in the same place right now and still has five more eps to go. It went up like TSC before it fell down for its final five eps and it probably will fall down again. The show has improved quite a bit in quality but a ton of shows improve by the second half of the season and fail (Ringer). So in a ep or two we will finally put the constant arguing to rest TCD is getting cancelled. I was trying to stay positive on TCD being renewed but the show is getting constant .4’s and is falling in viewership. Beauty it looks like will fall to likely cancellation. I can see its fighting but I think the bear will win in the end. Beauty at the beginning I doubted you and thought that the show was going to be utter garbage but I came to enjoy you and will be sad to see you go. I will enjoy these last few eps and when the series ends, I will give you a moment of silence. I’ll save the goodbye for later!

  • Tom

    @ Claudia

Most of my comments about B&B are prompted by posters who try and explain away the show’s low ratings by making reference to things like social media, the PCAs, etc. Their comments are frequently irrelevant or just plain incorrect. For some reason, there are more posters here trying to put lipstick on the B&B pig than any other show. So, I like to set the record straight when it’s appropriate. However, what I personally think of B&B is both obvious and irrelevant. The pertinent question is why the show’s target audience of 18-34 year old females is largely ignoring it. If I were a committed Beastley, I’d be more interested in trying to address that issue than worrying about how the Secret Circle did last season.

  • RS

I dislike Beauty and the Male Model (and I never watched one mili-second of the Secret Circle or the Vampire Diaries, or anything on the CW other than SPN and the occasional Arrow and Heart of D. I have set forth my reasons in previous correspondence. Change the name (truth in advertising) and I will withdraw my objections: Beauty and the Incredible Hulk; Beauty and the Pretty Boy with a tiny scar on his pretty face; etc. There is no beast here. I agree with the reviewer who, upon first review, pointed out that this would be the supreme, ultimate exercise in irony if he thought the network and the fans were capable of such – OMG, he has a little scar . . . on his face . . . SCREAM – he’s a monster here on the CW – get the pitch forks.

My tableau of a fan of the Walking Dead meeting a fan of Beauty and the Male Model (I watch the former):

WD (male/female young reader of the graphic novel): Hey, I heard you’ve got a beast show here; let’s see the monster.

B&MM (female 14-25): Yes, it’s so romantic!!!! (hearts and smiley faces)

WD: Yeah, my Mom loved the 80s version. Apparently this Perlman actor spent like hours in the make-up chair becoming the beast, and then read poetry to all the hopelessly romantic women in the audience. Mom said she came home from lawyering, got a glass of white wine and went to another dimension. Can’t really blame her; Dad is a tax attorney, if you know what I mean. So hit me with this beast. I am always up for a good make-up job.

B&MM: There he is (dramatic pointing to stage).

WD: Where? I can’t see anyone. Is he hiding behind the pretty guy?

B&MM: No, don’t you see it? He has a scar. On his face!! Oh, the horror.

WD: Where? I thought that was a pimple. That’s your beast?

B&MM: I’ve gazed too long upon the horror. I must go sit down.

WD: OK . . . I’ll just go back to a place with real special effects make- up. (Calls mother) Hey, Mom, are you watching that CW Beauty and the Beast? Calm down, Mom, stop screaming. OK, it’s the abomination of a beautiful trope. OK, Perlman, Benson, and George C. Scott are spinning in their graves although only one of them is actually dead. Mom, go now and put the animated Beauty and the Beast in the DVD and watch it. I’ll call back in 1 1/2 hours when you have calmed down. I’m going to go watch some zombies.

  • Dave

    1. If you’re going to address me, try your best to take your meds before doing so. That way, you could avoid calling someone a retard for responding to a stupid statement.

    2. I was NEVER a Secret Circle fan nor am I a Beauty and the male Model fan. All I watch on The CW are Nikita and The Vampire Diaries.

    3. With TVD, Arrow and SPN renewed with Nikita and Dixie likely; that only leaves 5 spots for fall shows. How in the hell is The CW going to move Nikita in the summer and premiere six new shows with only four veteran shows. Instead of calling me a retard, you should probably do the math and logic in your head instead to insulting others and typing utter nonsense.

Have a nice day HERPDERP(what kind of name is that anyway?) :)

  • JulieDawn

RS: Who does your posts up for you, since I now doubt your ability to read (and therefore write)?

For the umpteenth time (said to you by me and many others), this Beast is NOT a re-make. It’s a re-imagining, as described by the creators. He is NOT supposed to be ugly or scary or whatever else you want in his non-Beast persona.
Rather, the Beast in this story refers to the beast inside the person, how the horrors he’s been subjected to affect him as a man and a human being. It’s also a reference to the good and evil in society, and therefore this story.

Apparently you fail to have the depth to understand a concept you can’t see in your picture books. Hopefully someone will read this comment to you.

My bottom line is that if you don’t understand the basic concept of the show (whether you watch it or not), any comment you might try to make about it is pointless.

  • Lisa

Beauty and the Beast really my only “must watch” show on the CW right now. I try to catch Aarow but other than that…..

I would REALLY hate to see BATB cancelled. I’m so tired getting invested in a show and it being cancelled after one season.
