Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the cancellation bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@herpderp – telling someone to go kill themselves is never acceptable. Flag on that play! Perhaps a small time out would help. And an apology.

@Fay – As a commentator on SpoilerTV for several years now, I would love for the contests, polls, and comments on that site to actually sway whether shows were renewed or cancelled. However the sad fact is that none of the polls won means one iota to anyone making those decisions. The CW doesn’t even send screeners to Spoiler; they aren’t using it to make billion dollar decisions. It’s doubtful anyone of importance at the CW is even aware there was a contest much less who won it.

**For the record, I have no horse in this race. I made it through 3 episodes each of Carrie Diaries and Beauty and the Beast before dropping them. I made it through about 20 minutes of Hart of Dixie. The only undecided show I watch is Nikita and even I can’t believe that one was renewed last year.

  • RS

OMG, he has a little scar; on his face; get the pitchforks. I didn’t score this one; it was a critic. My pointless comments will dance on the show’s grave either this year – or when/if it is renewed for Friday and dies a ignominious death next year. Still think I can’t read or write? I don’t think so.

  • Claudia

Your example of the WD & BATB its irrelevant to me, I watch both shows and I love and enjoy both of them, even more the latter and I also watch Spartacus. Those are my must see tv shows right now very different from each other, huh? Advantage of being a 37 yrs. old woman, I can watch anything and be open minded about it, so whats your point?

  • CPE

Claudia and JulieDawn – hi there. Hope you’re having a swell night over there on Mount Olympus, looking down at we mere mortals who look at this “re-imagining” (the two most dreaded words in show business, by me at any rate) of a beloved show with a rich mythos. This is probably the one and only time I’ll ever reply to you, as your curious imitations of intellectual replies are right up there with the Three Stooges attempting to learn class and societal graces in several of their shorts. Your responses strike me as much the same sort of nose-in-the-air nabobs who (excuse me while I affect a nasal tone) onnnnnly watch the films of Fellini and Kurosawa.

I mean really, Julie.. come on, now. Pictures in her books? Really? Is that the best you can do? She can’t write? That doesn’t even make sense, right down to the correct semi-colons and proper spelling. Read this comment to you, I think you said? That’s so boundlessly dim witted I’m not going to dignify it with any response other than if she couln’t read, she couldn’t have know to have anybody read it to her, now could she? So I think we can safely cross your schweinerei (thank you, Groucho Marx) off our list of concerns. Have a nice life and don’t forget to tip the waitress.

Then there’s you, Claudia. You seemed like you were working up to an actual point and then got distracted and quit. Perhaps by a dust mote or something with equal intellectual heft commensurate with your vast.. something, because it sure isn’t anything I can find words for.

Well, I’ve got to go now. I have to get ready for the premiere of the second of Doctor Who series 7 on Saturday. As for this bilge, I will simply say: this BATB is to the original as boy bands are to AC/DC. Thank you.

  • tommie

I don’t get the argument that the CW will renew BatB because they can’t cancel everything – as someone else noted, they already seem committed to dragging HoD and Nikita to syndication, why add another problematic show to that list?

If they’re really hesitant to launch too many new shows in the fall, then it would just make more sense for them to quickly produce new episodes of Oh Sit, What’s My Line? or rush production on cycle 21 of America’s Next Top Model. It would not make sense to renew BatB as it’s already getting 0.5’s behind their highest rated show.

  • Jason50

I might have brought this up when BATB first started but when “re-imagining” a series there are certain main parameters which it must follow to be titled as that series. The main reason people grumble about this series is the fact the Beast can change from human to beast form which totally cancels out what the Beauty and the Beast story is about. You can say this story is inspired by BATB but you can’t really call it BATB. Heck, you can take the title out and replace it with The Incredible Hulk or Jeckle and Hyde, change some character names and call it a re-imagining. It’s like a Batman series where Bruce Wayne’s parents never died or a Superman series where Clark was born a human. YOU CAN’T HAVE IT. It’s a main part of the character and their story(and don’t even get me started on vampires that sparkle when they’re in sunlight).

  • Lily

Just do something the CW and cancel Beauty and the Flop.

  • Lily

“Certain to by renewed by May, 2012″.
    Not 2013?

  • Richard Steven Hack

Yes, as I’ve repeatedly said here, this BATB doesn’t work precisely BECAUSE this guy – or even more precisely, the girl – really doesn’t have a significant problem. At any moment, he could turn himself in, with the cop backing him up, get medical help and stop being a “beast” – or at least learn to control it. At the worst, he could go to Mexico and do that, or China, or some place where freakin’ Muirfield can’t find him. If he turns himself in at CNN or Katie Couric, he can blow the whole conspiracy wide open and while it might not turn out all that well for him, at least he can’t get assassinated.

In short, WHY THE HELL IS HE HIDING? And he’s doing a LOUSY JOB of that, anyway. The number of times he’s exposed himself for no rational reason now has got to be in the dozens. Every time he does ANYTHING, he ends up turning into the beast and making his situation worse.

In the REAL Beauty and the Beast myth, and the original TV show, there is no way the Beast can reveal himself because a) he DOES look like an animal, and b) he wouldn’t be accepted in his society precisely because there is NO WAY he can NOT look/be an animal. So the romantic part works because he and the girl can NEVER be together unless she abandons HER life which a) she can’t do, and b) he doesn’t want her to.

None of which even remotely applies to this version by any stretch of the imagination.

    So it’s a STUPID PREMISE!

I could go on about the bad writing, bad acting, stupid directing, and pointless actions on every character’s part, but why bother?

  • Zathe

HOD has no syndication value as shown by its repeats

I dont think its out of the woods yet. Maybe it is but it sure as hell going to be dead weight next season.

  • Jane

I have never watched BaTB but if it’s such a “re-imagining,” then they should have just given it a new name. They are trying to bite a well known myth while changing its most basic premise. Not cool.

  • Joanne

I think after the cancellation of Emily Owens, M.D. I have now been watching Beauty and the Beast faithfully. However, I think if CW cancels this series I will stop watching CW altogether. They just don’t give a show a decent chance. Vampire Diaries is getting dull.

  • juliedawn

@RS – apparently I was right – you can’t read, at least not with any understanding. What I describe about the concept of this BATB is not my opinion, it’s simply a fact about the show. Like it or don’t like it, but you have to acknowledge it! And if all you’ve been doing is repeating the words of a ‘critic’, then that only underscores my suspicions about your inability to think for yourself.

@CPE – that was hilarious – but probably not in the way you intended. Another one who takes everything so literally I am struggling to come up with any comment at all that you might ‘get’. Have you not heard of sarcasm? Have a nice day.

Oh and btw @CPE, I watch Doctor Who as well, in fact I even review it. Make sure when watching it this weekend you have someone with you to explain what’s going on.

Thank you both for the morning laugh with my coffee. :-)

  • Ted Craig

If TCD gets renewed over BATB, it will be for reasons we don’t see in the ratings, like which show can move more soap.

  • selenia

Beauty and the beast should be deleted because it is a boring show and mediocre actors who seem to wax. But there were better actors? In the two actors is no chemistry!

  • Danielle

@ Claudia….I agree! The chemistry on BATB is far superior to Arrow. I often wonder if they did a chemistry reading for that show? Don’t get me wrong, I like Arrow and I like Oliver/Stephen but none of the women he’s on screen with produces the spark that BATB has. IMO I think BATB has better acting too. Sometimes Oliver lacks the facial expressions that Vincent delivers naturally. My husband makes fun of Arrow so much, I can’t stand to watch it with him! lol

    @ JulieDawn…. I applaud you. Well said.

@ Dahne…if you haven’t watched BATB since ep 3, you should try it again. It has really come into its own.

@ RS….you really have no clue about BATB. Your incessant ramblings about the Beasts appearance (which you know nothing about, and I might add is slightly creepy) have put you in with a few other posters I’ve deemed as “not worth reading”… know, the ones who think they have SO much knowledge about how networks run? The same ones who think their opinion is the gospel and those who don’t share it are delusional? The haters who spend SO much time posting about a show they love to hate, ripping it apart without even giving it a chance.

Personally, I like the idea of this beast better. A tortured soul who doesn’t feel worthy of love and acceptance, not because of what he looks like but because of what he becomes and the shame that comes with what he’s done. Also, he’s still evolving, so what changes could come next or when is unknown. “Beauty is only skin deep” Yes he could function in society because he’s attactive but thats not the point. He’s unpredictable, he can’t control it and feels he’s a danger to society in general. He can’t turn himself in because a) society would not accept someone so unique, b) people/scientists/ goverment would want to disect him to understand him, c) he doesn’t know who he can trust,, d) Muirfield’s abilities reach far beyond a police precinct, e) sure he could blow the case wide open but he’d be dead before the end of the day and he chooses to live. The same “just turn yourself in” logic could have been used for the Bourne movies, but that wouldn’t make for an interesting story now would it? Or four movies. It’s called ENTERTAINMENT! Picking this show apart because of this or that is just nitpicking. If you judged every show so harshly all you would be left with is the discovery channel, documentaries or military. But hey, those could be picked apart too!

  • BatbFan

@ Tom and @ RS still do not understand why commenting on BATB
deeds, actions, numbers ….. and trying to reason with the fans, positively or negatively
To everyone likes what you like and point
And if the show is canceled or not does not depend on us because we can write a bible here and it will not change the opinion of the executives of the CW
I think everyone should just enjoy what you like and stop worrying about what other

  • Jay

Nikita is fabulously entertaining, like one of the old Bond films.

Mainstream network cop slop looks embarrassing by comparison.
